TOPIC INTRODUCTION

Croatia’s Adriatic coastline has a long tradition of tourism. Its warm sea, thousands of islands, and abundance of sunshine, along with preserved nature and cultural heritage attract many tourists from all over the world during the summer days. However, focusing only on mass maritime, sun and sea tourism, based solely in coastal regions brings with it logistical, economic, ecological and sociocultural pressures, management difficulties and problems.

So, how do we expand beyond, offer something different, offer something more? How do we present natural and cultural heritage to tourists while still making sure that it’s preserved and kept for future generations? How can we successfully manage mass tourism and its problems? We couldnt have found a better place for hosting this years EMRC23 with such a theme than the dalmation coast, specifically the Murter island!

Location and acomodation

The Dalmatian coast is where most of the tourist activities take place. Murter is a small island located in Šibenik-Knin county, about 34 km up the coast from Šibenik. The island is
connected to the mainland by a small drawbridge, passing through the town of Tisno.
The island covers an area of 18.7 sq. km. and its population is just over 3,600. Hotel Reflektor is located on the bay of Slanica, in the southern part of the Murter island.

Workshops

Natural heritage includes all geographically, biologically and ecologically valuable natural sights and values, while the most principal are protected as nature parks, nature reserves etc.

Their potential is seen in the possibility of developing tourism in rural areas and ecotourism, alongside highlighting the importance of protecting local ecosystems and making sure they don’t succumb to the growing phenomenon of mass tourism.

This workshop will try to showcase their increasing importance in tourism and explain different ways to enable protection of said natural heritage.

Mass tourism is becoming the dominant form of tourism in the world, with many countries having both good and bad examples of dealing with said issues. Our homeland is no different, with Croatia most often being represented by maritime sun and sea tourism, with visitor numbers growing each year.

Despite the high number of tourist arrivals, overnight stays and the income generated from mass tourism, it is highly unsustainable and brings various ecological, cultural and economical problems.

The goal of this workshop is to answer the question: “How to successfully manage mass tourism and minimize or eliminate the problems it creates in various places?’’

Cultural tourism is extremely important through the preservation of heritage and identity and enabling heritage conservancy through sustainable tourism valorization. Possibilities of reducing seasonality, spatial dispersion of various tourism offerings, strengthening of national and local identity, education, protection, restoration and sustainable management of cultural heritage are the topics covered by this workshop, alongside trying to answer the question ‘’How to successfully recognize cultural heritage and work on its direct conservation?’’.

Scientific Excursions

The largest natural lake in Croatia and a wetland ecosystem that is one of the most threatened habitats of the world. A natural cryptodepression separated from the Adriatic Sea by a narrow strip of land yet connected to the sea by a man-made canal, makes a truly diverse habitat, home to hundreds of species both in flora and fauna.

An educational trail set in karst and makia will take us to the highest point of the nature park – Viewpoint Kamenjak, where we will enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire Vransko Lake,  Murter island, Kornati Archipelago and more.

The seven tufa cascades of the Krka River might be one of the most famous tourist sites in Croatia which makes it perfect for exploring the impact of mass tourism on nature, especially the delicate tufa formations.

From the small town of Skradin, located where the Krka estuary forms Lake Prokljan, where nautical tourism also thrives due to its connection to the sea, we will cycle to Skradinski buk, the last and the biggest cascade on the river flowing over seventeen barriers, making it the most beautiful as well as the most exploited site in the park.
