SUMMARY:EGEA 2.0 - Jena Live meeting
DESCRIPTION:When?\n\n\n\nfrom 17 November 2023to 19 November 2023\n\n\n\nShow schedule \n\n\n\n\n\nWhere?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho will come?\n\n\n\n\n\nWe don’t know yet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is EGEA 2.0?\n\n\n\nEGEA is part of our identity\, it’s a family that is offering a supportive\, intercultural environment for young people that encourages them to step up and take ownership of the future. EGEA is also a European geography association that aims to strengthen the strategic position of Geography in Europe. Being EGEAns not just means to study geography but to identify as geographers\, because we believe in what we are doing. Our success is built on the work each EGEAn is putting into this great association to build an innovative and better future for all. \n\n\n\nHowever\, if you want to change the world\, you have to know how to pay for it.\n\n\n\nFinancial support for congresses\, refunding travel costs for official positions\, hosting the EGEA website\, merch\, and giveaways\, etc. all these things cost money. Therefore\, the missing money from the EU Grant left a big hole on our bank account. For the last two years the Finance Team tried to find new long-term sponsors to plug this financial hole but had to realize how difficult it was getting long-term sponsors on board under the given structures. \n\n\n\nThis problem was the seed for many internal discussions about strengths\, structural shortcomings and how we could go about fixing them and made us come up with a new project idea to address these challenges: EGEA 2.0. The project is now ready to be rolled out on the big floor\, including every EGEAn in the process of finding sustainable long-term solutions. It addresses not only EGEA’s issue of eligibility to receive financial support\, but also the communication strategy and visibility of our work in general to create new opportunities and make EGEA known and being an EGEAn valued beyond EGEA. This project wants to tackle all there is to EGEA and build a sustainable foundation that guarantees its future. \n\n\n\nIn this session we will mostly discuss and collect all strengths and weaknesses we as an organization show and the ways we approach them today. Questions on EGEAs struggles and future will be elaborated on this session\, where we try to understand current dynamics and structures and initiate a transformation towards a stronger\, more financially stable\, and resilient association with even more great opportunities for our members.  \n\n\n\nThis is the time and place for every EGEAn to express their concerns about EGEAs current state. We would love to hear how you envision EGEA in 5 years and what concrete ideas you have. \n\n\n\nWe are looking forward to holding this session online\, enabling even more EGEAns to participate and making this process more democratic. Maybe after this OSM session you are curious about working on EGEAs future and want to be part of this project. 😊 \n\n\n\nThank you for your consideration and support\, \n\n\n\nWiebke and CarolaFinance Team Coordinators \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrga Team\n\n\n\nThis unit has no representatives

During the trip we will learn about the history of the town and about life in the border region. \n\n\n\nSecond day (Saturday) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, we will go hiking together to Kozubová\, located at 981 m above sea level\, where we will be able to look around from the local lookout tower in case of good weather. \n\n\n\nIt is possible that the order of excursions will change\, due to bad weather\, etc. \n\n\n\nACCOMODATION\n\n\n\nWe will stay at the tourist base in Návsí. There are newly renovated bathrooms and kitchen. The accommodation will be for four to eight people in rooms with bunk beds. The program will take place in a large common room. \n\n\n\nCapacity: 32 egeans \n\n\n\nPets are not allowed. \n\n\n\nAddress: \n\n\n\nTuristická základna DDM Bohumínč.p. 31E739 92 Návsí \n\n\n\nTravel information\n\n\n\nBy car it’s easy for you – 4 hours from Prague\, 2 hours from Brno and 1\,5 hours from Olomouc. If you come from Slovakia – it will take you 2\,5 hours from Bratislava. But for the sake of sustainability\, we would still recommend taking the train. There are a limited number of parking spaces. \n\n\n\nThat’s why for this weekend we chose a place located at a railway node. Either choose a train that goes from Prague/Olomouc to Návsí or change once in Ostrava (recommended). If you are coming from Slovakia\, you only need to change trains once in Žilina. From the railway station it is then less than 4 km to the accommodation. If you don’t want to walk\, you can take bus number 787 from the railway station and get off at Návsí\, Jasení\, Goryl. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\n\n\n\nstudent identity card (ISIC…)\n\n\n\nhiking shoes\, waterproof jacket\, warm clothes)\n\n\n\nsmall backpack for trips\n\n\n\ntypical regional food and drink for cultural fair\n\n\n\nslippers\n\n\n\nzloty\, if you want to buy something in Poland\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nRegistration is open until 8 October via the web form: https://forms.gle/Qi72sg14dyeCB1zx6 \n\n\n\nMore information will be posted on the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/335118715629018/?ref=newsfeed

SUMMARY:Scientific Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nForest under Pressure\n\n\n\nThe majority of current forest ecosystems are subject to a number of natural disturbances (e.g. drought and extreme weather events) that can adversely affect their health and vitality by causing tree mortality or reducing their ability to provide goods and services. Extended to a larger scale\, these outcomes will have multiple effects on biosphere-atmosphere interactions. This will play an important role in future water-carbon cycle feedbacks through complex effects on forest biophysical properties and biogeochemical cycles. Understanding the dynamics\, processes\, and effects of tree mortality and related forest die-offs from drought is a vital step in identifying innovative practices and success factors to mitigate these effects. This requires crossing scales and disciplines ranging from physiology and ecology to vegetation modelling and forest management. We aim to gather a broad range of observational\, theoretical\, and experimental studies\, spanning a range of scales and conditions often characterised by a multidisciplinary approach.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Motivation\n\n\n\nRecognising the urgency of the situation\, scientists\, researchers\, policymakers\, and stakeholders need to come together to share knowledge\, expertise\, and innovative solutions to tackle this complex issue. This will ensure the sustainable management and conservation of forests for present and future generations. Our institute of Geography is carrying out research in the Hainich National Park in human and physical geography\, as well as remote sensing and GIS on this particular topic. Through interdisciplinary approaches and evidence-based discussions\, a scientific conference can foster collaborations\, generate new ideas\, and inform policy decisions to effectively address the pressing challenges faced by forests worldwide. Together with our Institute of Geography and local authorities we want to show some examples of how sustainable forest management can be addressed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOSTSLocationHow to get there\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n90 Euro\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSponsored & supported by:\n\n\n\n\nThüringenForst\n\n\n\nFriedrich-Schiller-University Jena\n\n\n\nHainich Nationalpark\n\n\n\nDigital Forest Project\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe SciCon2023 is taking place in the Hainich National Park in the wooden heart in the middle of Germany. The accommodation is located on a green meadow in the middle of beech forests (UNESCO World Heritage Site). It is the ideal starting point for our excursions and field work. We can relax at the bonfire in the evenings after a long day in the field or chill in the sauna (so don’t forget to bring your swimwear and towel). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince we are literally in the middle of a forest\, there is no public transportation to get there. The nearest train station is Mühlhausen/Thüringen\, approx. an hour apart from Erfurt. \n\n\n\nHere are the three possible routes from Erfurt to Mühlhausen:\n\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 12:33 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 13:25\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 13:07 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:15\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 14:04 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:57\n\n\n\n\nHere are the three possible routes from Göttingen to Mühlhausen:\n\n\n\n\nDeparture Göttingen 13:14 – Change in Eichenberg at 13:28 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:31\n\n\n\nDeparture Göttingen 14:08 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:58\n\n\n\n\nWe will offer 2 shuttle times from Mühlhausen to the accommodation\, which you will have to sign up for via email:\n\n\n\n\nShuttle 1: 14:45\n\n\n\nShuttle 2: 15:30\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 1Workshop 2Workshop 3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Dendrochronological View in the Past Century\n\n\n\nBy Dr. Gottfried Jetschke & Prof. Dr. Zech\n\n\n\nStep into the captivating world of dendrochronology within the lush embrace of Hainich National Park. In this workshop\, you’ll embark on a compelling journey to explore how trees respond to recent dry summer years. Through hands-on experience\, you’ll venture into the forest to gather sample cores from ancient trees. These cores will then be meticulously sanded and polished\, enabling us to measure the tree-ring width with extraordinary precision\, down to 0.01 mm. In a fascinating twist\, you’ll compare the annual growth increments during dry years to the average growth\, allowing us to create characteristic indices. These indices will provide us with insights into how trees adapt to environmental shifts\, particularly in response to summer temperature and rainfall. This workshop caters to the curious minds and budding scientists\, offering not just theoretical knowledge\, but the chance to be an active participant in deepening our understanding of nature’s intricate workings. Join us for an enlightening and adventurous voyage through time\, as we decode the secrets hidden within the ancient trees of Hainich National Park. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring Ecohydrology\n\n\n\nSession 1 by Sophia Sieber & Marcus Böhm \n\n\n\nSession 2 By Prof. Dr. Beate Michalzik & Prof. Dr. Anke Hildebrandt\n\n\n\nThis workshop\, hosted at Hainich National Park\, focuses on intensive forest monitoring for water and matter transport. It’s part of the Hainich Critical Zone Observatory\, linked to Collaborative Research Centre 1076 “AquaDiva.” The aim is to understand the connection between surface and subsurface water\, local geology’s impact on subsurface diversity and ecology. Together you will collect water samples from various forest areas\, measuring volume\, nitrate content\, and pH. Participants will also discuss climate change’s effects on water flow and quality. Additionally\, soil respiration rates and pH will be measured in various locations and tree species to understand their influence on carbon release. In summary\, this workshop offers insights into field monitoring in ecohydrology and biogeochemistry\, hands-on experience\, and discussions on climate change’s impact on forest ecosystem processes\, particularly water and nutrient cycling. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnvironmental Modelling\n\n\n\nBy David Montero\, Dr. Anne Klosterhalfen & Dr. Franziska Köbsch\n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging workshop on Earth Observation (EO) data management and analysis. This hands-on session immerses you in the world of remote sensing\, where you’ll learn to manipulate EO data cubes\, perform spatio-temporal operations\, and conduct spectral transformations—all within the user-friendly Python environment on Google Colab. But there’s more to this workshop than digital analysis. You’ll also gain practical knowledge about the Eddy Covariance technique\, which measures gas exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere\, and even have the unique opportunity to climb the flux tower where these measurements occur (be aware of heights). Our primary focus in this workshop is understanding Gross Primary Production (GPP) using EO data. We’ll show you how to compare your findings with GPP data collected from the Hainich Eddy Covariance tower\, bridging the gap between theory and real-world applications. You’ll also explore both linear and non-linear methods for inferring GPP\, providing valuable insights into the role of remote sensing in environmental monitoring and research.
