SUMMARY:Western REGIONAL Congress 2024
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLatest News\n\n\n\nThe Open Call for Workshopleaders and Trainers has started and is open until the 31th of December. For those of you who already have an idea for a workshop or training please see us on the 13th of December for a Q&A session on Zoom (see your entity emails for a link or contact us via wrc2024@egea.eu).We are looking forward to your applications!Workshop application formTrainer application form \n\n\n\nTopic\n\n\n\nSouthern Groningen and Drenthe have a history of underground energy resources\, heavily influencing the landscape until this day. To reach a sustainable future a transition to green energy is  required. \n\n\n\nThe Groningen natural gas field has been a topic of numerous discussions: the gas led to significant wealth but also resulted in a crisis of gas-related earthquakes damaging homes and buildings in the region. The impact on local communities is ongoing\, with a substantial restoration project spanning the entire region\, permanently altering the aesthetics of historic villages. The management of the gas-related earthquakes turned into a national political crisis\, eroding civilian faith in governmental competence. \n\n\n\nBesides the damage\, this crisis fueled the debate on the energy transition and the role that the province of Groningen is willing to play. Groningen has the potential to farm green energy like wind and solar energy. The geographical factors make this region a promising green energy area. On the other hand the province might not wish to be an area of energy farming again. \n\n\n\nWhile gas extraction in Groningen ended in October 2023\, the Wadden Sea gas fields and off-shore energy production by windmills are being considered as potential alternatives. Off-shore energy production has gained renewed relevance due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. However\, the effects of gas mining and off-shore wind farms are debated due to potential ecosystem impacts on this unique UNESCO Wadden Sea area. Off-shore farming also comes with new challenges like energy transportation and energy storing. \n\n\n\nSouthern Drenthe is home to the largest oil field in Western Europe. It marks the establishment of the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) in the oil village of Schoonebeek. For a long time\, it was seen as a great opportunity for locals\, and NAM contributed to numerous facilities for the local community. However\, due to the Groningen gas earthquakes\, there is now growing suspicion against NAM\, resulting in a strained relationship between the company and the villagers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe have some Ideas planned for great excursions. But those are still only ideas. Stay tuned for updates! \n\n\n\nRound trip; earthquakes in GroningenRound trip; oil\, energy and geologyCity and energy; Groningen city tour and harbour visitWalk; Nature\, landscape and tourismEasy bike; Archeology and glacial landscapeHard bike; Countryside of North Netherlands\n\nGas extraction from the Groningen Sandstone has caused induced earthquakes over the past decades. This resulted in extensive damage to buildings in a large part of the province. We are going to see the Groningen landscape and visit the affected region. \n\n\n\n\n\nLocated in the south of Drenthe and across the border in Germany\, we will visit some relatively unknown oil extractions as well as a geology museum. Potentially\, we will also visit a hydrogen initiative. \n\n\n\n\n\nGroningen is the largest city and significant (historic) centre of the Groningen-Drenthe region. Join us on a city tour! Additionally\, we will visit the industrial harbour and power plant.  \n\n\n\n\n\nDrenthe is a very green province with some sandy soil and a bit more elevation (25m\, 10-20m prominence) than the bordering provinces. This creates some natural regions. In this excursion we take a look at the forest\, creeks and tourisms in the national park directly next to our accommodation. \n\n\n\n\n\nDrenthe is known for the rocks and boulders that came from Norway during the last glaciation. These were used to construct megalithic graves (dolmen) during the late stone age. We will visit these monuments and explore some of the historic landscapes and their histories. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe wouldn’t be in the Netherlands without riding a bike! We will make a day trip through the forest\, past a lake and across some countryside. We will probably also see some of these prehistoric graves as well. The whole route is flat and will be a casual ride but with quite some distance! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nWe prepared a few potential workshops for you but if you think we are missing an important aspect of our topic please let us know and apply for your own workshop! \n\n\n\n\n\nShaking Grounds: Gasmining and Earthquakes in GroningenMoving Soils: Understanding Soil Subsidence in the NetherlandsEmbodied Experiences of Disasters in Slow-Motion \n\nGas mining was practiced for 60 years in Groningen. With it came economic prosperity and environmental damage. We want to explore how it came to this situation. How are gas fields created and why of all places in Groningen? What is the economic value of gas mining and what outcomes should you expect? What will change now that the gas mining stopped? \n\n\n\nWe want to give our participants the possibility to work on one of those research questions and in the end create a little info-slide of it\, which can be posted on social media\, as well as a lot of stickers! (An EGEA Bochum speciality) \n\n\n\nWith the situation being that the workshop groups will be quite big\, our participants will work in smaller groups so they can get to know each other even better! \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on a journey beneath the surface as we delve into the world of soil subsidence in the Netherlands. This workshop offers the opportunity to explore the causes and consequences of sinking ground levels from a physical geographical perspective. Afterwards\, we will have a closer look at how to deal with and even prevent this process from a human geographical view.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between natural processes and human activities that led to the gradual sinking of the Dutch landscape.  \n\n\n\nUncover the mysteries below ground and become part of the workshop to ensure a resilient and sustainable future for the Netherlands! \n\n\n\n\n\nThe interactive and creative workshop is about the reflection of the intricate entanglement of individual experiences\, societal structures\, and the impact of disaster in the context of our capitalist system. We will focus on the profound effects of extractivism on individuals and communities using the feminist concept of embodiment and a participatory counter mapping approach. In our workshop\, we will take the past\, present and future consequences of the gas extraction in Groningen as example to discuss how ‘disaster in slow motion’ shape the embodiment and imagination of extractivism and protests. The creative engagement in counter mapping provides a powerful tool to not only analyse but also actively engage your own embodied experiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Might be changed \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOCATION AND ACCOMODATION\n\n\n\nThe name “Drenthe” is believed to mean “three lands\,” and once you discover its beauty\, you’ll know why. \n\n\n\nDrenthe is a province known for its vast forests and serene rivers. It’s one of the country’s least crowded regions\, making it a haven for nature lovers. \n\n\n\nFor our accomodation „De Kwartjesberg“ we secured a maximum capacity of 112 people meaning there’s plenty of space for everyone. \n\n\n\nDuring the breaks get ready for some serious fun! Cause we have beach volleyball court\, basketball court\, and ping-pong table – perfect for leisure activities. \n\n\n\nPlus\, with our unique forest location\, you’ll have the privacy you deserve\, surrounded by the beauty of nature. No distractions\, just pure focus on making the most of your WRC experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n🚆 All Aboard the Train: Start your adventure by hopping on a train to the beautiful city of Groningen. Enjoy scenic views along the way\, and get ready to dive into the WRC experience! \n\n\n\n🚗 Hit the Road: If you prefer the freedom of the open road\, set your GPS to Gasselterstraat 9\, 9533PC Drouwen. It’s a picturesque drive that will lead you to our event. Remember\, the journey can be as exciting as the destination! \n\n\n\n🚌 Bus It Up: Hop on a bus to Groningen if you’re looking for a convenient and cost-effective option. Relax\, chat with fellow travelers\, and let us handle the rest. 🚌 \n\n\n\n✈️ By Plane: If you’re coming from further afield\, the major airports in Amsterdam and Eindhoven are your gateways to WRC 2024. Just hop on a connecting flight\, and you’ll be in Drouwen in no time! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSUPPORT FUND\n\n\n\nPlease remember that EGEAns can apply for the Support Fund to help finance attending this event while registration for this event remains open. SUMMARY:North & Baltic Regional Congress 2024
DESCRIPTION:Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nTopic\n\nLocation\n\nProgram\n\nWorkshops\n\nTrainings\n\nOrgateam\n\n\n\ntopic\n\n\n\nNature is boundless and rarely has rigid lines of division. Instead\, it unfolds in a slow gradient\, transitioning from one ecosystem to another\, thus creating nice harmony without hard edges and boundaries. This year’s NBRC topic is Ecotones – the meeting and transition points between ecosystems or cultures. The word itself draws its roots from the ancient Greek words οἶκος for house and τόνος for tension. These ecological crossroads are not only hotspots for biodiversity\, but also epicentres of challenges. From wetlands and estuaries to the dynamic riverbanks and lake shores\, all these ecotones share a common trait – they are both hosts to a multitude of species and show sensitivity to the pressures of climate change\, urbanization\, and expanding agriculture. How can we find ways to preserve and respect these meeting areas? Can we find ways to incorporate this concept not only in ecology\, but also spatial planning\, urban and cultural geography? \n\n\n\nlocation\n\n\n\nThe congress will take place in the so-called “Lithuanian Switzerland”\, Molėtai municipality\, Čiulėnai village\, which is located around an hour’s drive from our capital Vilnius. The area is famous for its abundance of lakes\, dense forests and authentic settlements. Ever dreamed of living next to a lake? Our accommodation is situated right on the Lake Virintai shore! The Labanoras regional park and the Molėtai Astronomical Observatory\, which we hope to visit\, are right around the corner too! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nworkshops\n\n\n\n\nLake Depth Measuring: Introduction to Bathymetry\n\n\nWorkshop leader: dr. Laurynas Jukna \n\n\n\nLake depth measurements are essential for understanding the ecology of lakes: temperature gradients\, light availability and oxygen levels all depend on the lake depth and influence the distribution of various species by creating distinct habitats within lake. This workshop will provide insight about the bathymetry of the Lake Virintai next to our accomodation. We will compare different measuring techniques and already existings dataset\, see how sonar data looks like and learn how to use it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEcotone Effects on Animal Diversity\n\n\nWorkshop leaders: dr. Arūnas Samas & dr. Irena Nedveckytė \n\n\n\nIn this workshop you’ll have a wonderful opportunity to explore the surrounding nature\, get dirty and see species diversity in micro-ecotones yourself! “Ecotone Effects on Animal Diversity” will be led by one and only Dr. Arūnas Samas and Dr. Irena Nedveckytė. They are ecologists and lecturers who have been leading ecology student field practices for many years! Combining the knowledge of trap building methods and the importance of calculations – you will get to know the peculiarities of animal life in ecotones! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGIS for Cities: Landcover Extraction and Analysis for Functional Zone Identification\n\n\nWorkshop Leader Vaiva Venckauskaitė; Co-Leader Martyna Kazlauskaitė \n\n\n\nThis workshop is based on a real experimental project segment at ID Vilnius (leading GIS and spatial planning company in Vilnius) . City planners did not have any tools to check and monitor the city’s development after planning and construction project execution\, as well as the state of already realised sites. The workshop mainly focuses on showing how easily you can utilise code from GitHub for your own geospatial needs and expand your capabilities when GIS desktop applications are just not enough. But do not threat\, you will have to work with QGIS as well and predict functional zones in city blocks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWeather Forecast\n\n\nWorkshop leader: Miroslav Hakl (EGEA Praha) \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, led by Miroslav Hakl from EGEA Praha\, you will focus on working with data and learn where to get weather data and how to interpret it correctly. You will also try to collect weather data on the spot and make your own forecast! With focus on your country and the specifics of local weather conditions you can make a forecast for the following days for your hometown and follow up after you return from the congress to see if your forecast was correct. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealing with Nature: The Concept of Therapeutic Forests\n\n\nWorkshop Leader: Lukas Bevanda (EGEA Vienna) \n\n\n\nDelve deeper into the meaning and importance of natural resources and environments for us humans with Lukas from EGEA Vienna\, who will provide us with an insightful workshop about Therapeutic Forests. In the workshop\, you will learn about topics such as stress\, the nervous system\, physical processes\, sensory overload\, and how places such as Heringsdorf or the Shinrin Yoku concept have a healing effect and help us cope with all of this. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ntrainings & skill sessions\n\n\n\n\nFirst Aid Skill Session\n\n\nLeading: Arne and Chiara (EGEA Marburg) \n\n\n\nOutdoorsy EGEA Marburg members Arne and Chiara will provide first-aid skill session\, reminding us how to be safe in our adventures and what to do in the state of emergencies! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Journey to Self Acceptance & Self Care\n\n\nTrainers: Michel and Sina (EGEA Marburg) \n\n\n\nAs passionate advocates for personal development and well-being\, Michel and Sina from EGEA Marburg\, will guide participants through transformative journey\,  covering key aspects of self-acceptance and self-care\, offering participants practical tools and strategies to navigate their personal journeys. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCultivating Cultural Harmony: Embracing Unity in Diversity\n\n\nTrainer: Dunja Galinec (EGEA Zagreb) \n\n\n\nEGEA is full of different people from diverse cultures\, so in this training\, together with Dunja from EGEA Zagreb\, participants will learn how to practice cultural appreciation\, inclusivity and embrace our differences! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\norgateam
