SUMMARY:Scientific Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nForest under Pressure\n\n\n\nThe majority of current forest ecosystems are subject to a number of natural disturbances (e.g. drought and extreme weather events) that can adversely affect their health and vitality by causing tree mortality or reducing their ability to provide goods and services. Extended to a larger scale\, these outcomes will have multiple effects on biosphere-atmosphere interactions. This will play an important role in future water-carbon cycle feedbacks through complex effects on forest biophysical properties and biogeochemical cycles. Understanding the dynamics\, processes\, and effects of tree mortality and related forest die-offs from drought is a vital step in identifying innovative practices and success factors to mitigate these effects. This requires crossing scales and disciplines ranging from physiology and ecology to vegetation modelling and forest management. We aim to gather a broad range of observational\, theoretical\, and experimental studies\, spanning a range of scales and conditions often characterised by a multidisciplinary approach.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Motivation\n\n\n\nRecognising the urgency of the situation\, scientists\, researchers\, policymakers\, and stakeholders need to come together to share knowledge\, expertise\, and innovative solutions to tackle this complex issue. This will ensure the sustainable management and conservation of forests for present and future generations. Our institute of Geography is carrying out research in the Hainich National Park in human and physical geography\, as well as remote sensing and GIS on this particular topic. Through interdisciplinary approaches and evidence-based discussions\, a scientific conference can foster collaborations\, generate new ideas\, and inform policy decisions to effectively address the pressing challenges faced by forests worldwide. Together with our Institute of Geography and local authorities we want to show some examples of how sustainable forest management can be addressed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOSTSLocationHow to get there\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n90 Euro\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSponsored & supported by:\n\n\n\n\nThüringenForst\n\n\n\nFriedrich-Schiller-University Jena\n\n\n\nHainich Nationalpark\n\n\n\nDigital Forest Project\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe SciCon2023 is taking place in the Hainich National Park in the wooden heart in the middle of Germany. The accommodation is located on a green meadow in the middle of beech forests (UNESCO World Heritage Site). It is the ideal starting point for our excursions and field work. We can relax at the bonfire in the evenings after a long day in the field or chill in the sauna (so don’t forget to bring your swimwear and towel). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince we are literally in the middle of a forest\, there is no public transportation to get there. The nearest train station is Mühlhausen/Thüringen\, approx. an hour apart from Erfurt. \n\n\n\nHere are the three possible routes from Erfurt to Mühlhausen:\n\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 12:33 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 13:25\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 13:07 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:15\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 14:04 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:57\n\n\n\n\nHere are the three possible routes from Göttingen to Mühlhausen:\n\n\n\n\nDeparture Göttingen 13:14 – Change in Eichenberg at 13:28 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:31\n\n\n\nDeparture Göttingen 14:08 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:58\n\n\n\n\nWe will offer 2 shuttle times from Mühlhausen to the accommodation\, which you will have to sign up for via email:\n\n\n\n\nShuttle 1: 14:45\n\n\n\nShuttle 2: 15:30\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 1Workshop 2Workshop 3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Dendrochronological View in the Past Century\n\n\n\nBy Dr. Gottfried Jetschke & Prof. Dr. Zech\n\n\n\nStep into the captivating world of dendrochronology within the lush embrace of Hainich National Park. In this workshop\, you’ll embark on a compelling journey to explore how trees respond to recent dry summer years. Through hands-on experience\, you’ll venture into the forest to gather sample cores from ancient trees. These cores will then be meticulously sanded and polished\, enabling us to measure the tree-ring width with extraordinary precision\, down to 0.01 mm. In a fascinating twist\, you’ll compare the annual growth increments during dry years to the average growth\, allowing us to create characteristic indices. These indices will provide us with insights into how trees adapt to environmental shifts\, particularly in response to summer temperature and rainfall. This workshop caters to the curious minds and budding scientists\, offering not just theoretical knowledge\, but the chance to be an active participant in deepening our understanding of nature’s intricate workings. Join us for an enlightening and adventurous voyage through time\, as we decode the secrets hidden within the ancient trees of Hainich National Park. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring Ecohydrology\n\n\n\nSession 1 by Sophia Sieber & Marcus Böhm \n\n\n\nSession 2 By Prof. Dr. Beate Michalzik & Prof. Dr. Anke Hildebrandt\n\n\n\nThis workshop\, hosted at Hainich National Park\, focuses on intensive forest monitoring for water and matter transport. It’s part of the Hainich Critical Zone Observatory\, linked to Collaborative Research Centre 1076 “AquaDiva.” The aim is to understand the connection between surface and subsurface water\, local geology’s impact on subsurface diversity and ecology. Together you will collect water samples from various forest areas\, measuring volume\, nitrate content\, and pH. Participants will also discuss climate change’s effects on water flow and quality. Additionally\, soil respiration rates and pH will be measured in various locations and tree species to understand their influence on carbon release. In summary\, this workshop offers insights into field monitoring in ecohydrology and biogeochemistry\, hands-on experience\, and discussions on climate change’s impact on forest ecosystem processes\, particularly water and nutrient cycling. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnvironmental Modelling\n\n\n\nBy David Montero\, Dr. Anne Klosterhalfen & Dr. Franziska Köbsch\n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging workshop on Earth Observation (EO) data management and analysis. This hands-on session immerses you in the world of remote sensing\, where you’ll learn to manipulate EO data cubes\, perform spatio-temporal operations\, and conduct spectral transformations—all within the user-friendly Python environment on Google Colab. But there’s more to this workshop than digital analysis. You’ll also gain practical knowledge about the Eddy Covariance technique\, which measures gas exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere\, and even have the unique opportunity to climb the flux tower where these measurements occur (be aware of heights). Our primary focus in this workshop is understanding Gross Primary Production (GPP) using EO data. We’ll show you how to compare your findings with GPP data collected from the Hainich Eddy Covariance tower\, bridging the gap between theory and real-world applications. You’ll also explore both linear and non-linear methods for inferring GPP\, providing valuable insights into the role of remote sensing in environmental monitoring and research. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience\, this workshop offers an immersive experience in data analysis and environmental exploration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrainings\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraining 1Training 2Training 3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMake your CV stand out\n\n\n\nBy Wiebke Breternitz\n\n\n\nIn today’s competitive job market\, a well-crafted CV can be the key to opening doors to your dream career. SUMMARY:Karstic Weekend '23
DESCRIPTION:An event by EGEA Ljubljana organized in the heart of the Slovene karstic region surrounded by the forested Dinaric mountains. Participants will discover this unique area of Slovene geography and all of its characteristics\, from caves\, poljes\, dolines\, its history\, settlement\, bears\, forests and everything inbetween with the help of karst researchers and experts in the field. \n\n\n\nApplications have closed but keep a close eye on our Instagram page for any updates and possible last minute spots! \n\n\n\nLOCATION\n\n\n\nThe event will take place in the village of Nova Štifta\, 10 min away from the town of Ribnica located about an hour south of Ljubljana by train. The area is famous for its centuries old woodenware tradition and\, of course\, for its karstic plateaus\, poljes\, dolines\, rivers and forests\, which hide populations of all three of the large carnivores living in Slovenia – wolves\, bears and lynx! Participants will be staying in a monastery right next to one of the most important pilgrimage churches of the area\, perched on a little hill overlooking the karstic Ribnica polje and on the edge of the forested Dinaric mountains. The event will start in Ribnica\, which can easily be reached by train and bus from Ljubljana; the rest of the transport until our goodbyes in Ribnica on Sunday will be taken care off by us and is already included in the participation fee! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n\n\n\nWe will work together with institutions and societies connected to karst to give you an insight into this interesting and maybe lesser known field of geography and other connected sciences. After arriving to Ribnica and getting a feel for the local culture and geography\, we will organize an introductory lecture on all things karst given by one of the researchers from the Department of Geography of the University of Ljubljana. Next day\, a karst researcher from the Department will guide an excursion to the poljes of Clasiccal karst and the Križna cave. Stay tuned for more details\, but there will definitely be plenty of caves\, dolines\, poljes\, karstic rivers etc. involved! The scientific theme will continue on Saturday with workshops organized by even more geographers and other karst scientists on various topics (The management of large carnivores in the Dinarides\, Wind power production possibilities and limitations on karst\, others TBA)\, while there will be another half day excursion held in the vicinity of the accomodation in the afternoon. Of course the whole weekend won’t be just karst and science\, EGEA classics and plenty of Slovene experiences will also make an appearance! \n\n\n\n\nSome sights from the area which we will probably discover during the weekend 🙂 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHOW TO GET TO RIBNICA\n\n\n\nRibnica is easily reachable by public transport from Ljubljana\, while reaching it from other cities in Slovenia or Croatia without transfering in Ljubljana will be quite a challenge. Ljubljana is well connected to other European cities by frequent Flixbus connections\, nightrains and other international train connections (use the Deutsche Bahn website to find connections)\, while arriving by plane to Ljubljana airport might not be the cheapest option due to a lack of low cost carriers (consider Tarvisio\, Trieste or Zagreb instead if flying is a must). \n\n\n\n\nBY TRAIN\nRibnica is easily reachable by train\, since it lies on the trainline between Ljubljana and Kočevje\, which was completely renovated in the past years with brand new train stations. There are 11 trains a day from Ljubljana\, with most journeys requiring an easy transfer in the town of Grosuplje. You can check the timetable and buy tickets on the webpage of Slovene railways. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBY BUS\nThere are hourly buses to Ribnica leaving from the Main bus station in Ljubljana (often called Ljubljana AP on the bus timetables)\, right in front of the Main train station. You can use the website of the Ljubljana bus station to check for the bus timetables. Unfortunately you cannot check for journeys which require a transfer\, so if you are coming from Bled for instance\, you have to check separately for the connection first to Ljubljana AP and from there to Ribnica. The two main bus companies in this part of the country are Arriva and Nomago. The correct name of the bus station in Ribnica is Ribnica na Dolenjskem. \n\n\n\nMost buses to Ribnica are bound to Kočevje\, so look for signs to Kočevje and/or Ribnica on the bus station in Ljubljana. You can buy the ticket directly from the bus driver\, but beware\, it’s cash only and the bus drivers might not accept 50€ bills. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBY CAR\nIf you are travelling by car\, there is ample parking space available in the centre of Ribnica\, most of it free\, so finding a place to park before heading to the accommodation shouldn’t pose a problem. There is also a large parking lot next to the Rokodelski center if the parking spots in the centre will be taken. There is also enough parking space next to our accommodation in Nova Štifta\, where you can park after the opening ceremony in Ribnica. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor any questions regarding getting to the Karstic Weekend or tips for things to see in Slovenia before or after the event\, don’t hesitate to contact us on Instagram or write us on Whattsapp (+386 64 150 086).
