SUMMARY:Western regional congress 2023
DESCRIPTION:Facebook\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Topic\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nprogram\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\n\ntravel Detail\n\n\n\n\n\nOrgateam\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTopic\n\n\n\nWith an ongoing change in our climate european weather has become more and more unpredictable in recent years. As extreme weather events will occur increasingly it is time for societies to face those challenges. We are in urgent need to adapt and\n\n\n\nPrepare for the Extreme!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClimate change is incredibly multifaceted and present everywhere – severe weather events\, crisis management\, urban planning\, renewable energies\, monitoring systems\, tourism\, agriculture and emissions are just a few examples. During the congress\, we will discuss these challenges in more detail from selected geographical perspectives while the workshops and excursions offered will provide the broadest possible coverage of contexts. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nlocation\n\n\n\nIn order to have a direct look at the consequences of climate change WRC23 will take place in Thuringia Forest. In this unique mountainous region in central Germany influences by extreme weather events have been visible for a few years already. With the forest being composed of mainly coniferous trees it is highly impacted by heat waves and droughts and therefore has been facing a massive bark beetle invasion. In addition to that\, the region has been facing tremendous economical and societal changes in the past four decades after German reunification. Rural depopulation\, sectoral unemployment or sustainable urban development strategies are only a few issues the Thurnigia Forest is confronted with. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur accommodation will be Ferienpark Thüringer Wald\, a beautiful situated recreational park directly in the forest next to the small town of Schalkau. With cozy dorms\, plenty of seminar rooms\, an assembly hall and a small restaurant attached this accommodation provides everything for a magnificent congress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nworkshops & Excursions\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\n\n1. Natural disasters: A question of climate change?\nThe workshop will address the question if whether climate change is responsible for the latest natural disasters. We will look at historical and current events and derive connections and differences. Also a look at the origin and the (geographical) conditions of the region are very interesting. \n\n\n\n\n2. Prep R for the X-treme:\nIn our workshop ‘PrepR for the X-treme’ our main topic is the increase in temperature and how it affects forest ecosystems\, for example through droughts. We analyse these effects by using remote sensing data in combination with the programming language R in a beginner-friendly manner (no programming experience required). If you are looking to improve your data analysis skills\, learn about remote sensing or look into forest ecosystems\, this is the workshop for you! \n\n\n\n\n3. Urban Resilience – How to future-proof our cities:\nOur cities\, fragile by nature and by design\, have created some of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Rapid urbanization raises the question of adaptability to future social\, environmental\, technological and economic changes\, as most of the population is expected to settle in urban agglomerations. In this workshop we will have a look at the challenges cities are currently facing in a rapidly changing world and what kind of proactive measures are required to not only survive\, but prevail. \n\n\n\n\n4. Flood-risk and how to deal with it:\nClimate change causes sea levels to rise and increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. Recent catastrophes such as Ahr-River-Valley demonstrate the importance of understanding risk and exposure to flood and measures of mitigation\, protection and adaption. In this workshop\, we’ll figure out what makes an area prone to damage by flood and the struggle of flood-proofing settlements. Let’s try out a range of tools from QGIS to collaborative planning that can help you to make your community more prepared for the extreme. \n\n\n\n\n5. Geopolitical discussion on green policy in Europe:\nHave you ever wanted to take part in a Model United Nations-like discussion? In this workshop you will have the opportunity to train your discussion skills by representing a european nation in a political debate on green policy in Europe. You will receive input on discussion techniques\, research arguments and facts on green policy and your respective nation’s interests and\, finally\, apply all this in a full-on debate in the final session. \n\n\n\n\n6. Climate Adaptation Strategies in Tourism:\nThe workshop “Climate Adaptation Strategies in Tourism” aims to examine the impacts of climate change on tourism and discuss some solutions. During the workshop\, participants will recognize the risks of climate change\, understand the current trends in climate adaptation in tourism\, develop strategies for climate adaptation measures\, and develop an action plan. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExcursions\n\n\n\n\n1. Hike – Into the Caves\nThis hike is guided by a local expert and includes a cave tour. You will get specific information about our surrounding area and its geological underground as a climate archive. \n\n\n\n\n2. Hike – Save the Thuringian Forest \nYou will focus on the local environmental impacts. Your guide is an agricultural biologist who will point out connections between ecology and different factors like drought\, warming\, water deficit\, monocultures and large-scale projects such as the nearby ICE route. \n\n\n\n\n3. Structural change in shrinking regions\nCity of arms and peace\, immense population decline and senior-friendly “health resort” – hardly anywhere else in Germany such great contrasts manifest themselves as in the socialistically transformed former mining and porcelain town of Suhl in the “Green Heart of Thuringia”. \n\n\n\nDuring this excursion we will look for historical traces and discuss questions of future urban development with regard to identity\, sustainable climate adaptation strategies and social resilience. \n\n\n\n\n4. Hard Hike – Up on to the Rennsteig\nThe Hard Hike is our longest hiking route and has been a congress tradition for years. Together we will walk part of the Rennsteig\, an historic long distance ridge walk. First we’ll take the bus to our starting point from where we’ll walk back to our accommodation. Of course\, there will be a bit of thematic input. \n\n\n\n\n5. Environmental reconstruction in the Thuringian Forest\nYou will visit a bog together with a professor from the University of Jena. On the basis of a bore core with sediments and pollen contained in it\, the regional climate and environmental history can be reconstructed. \n\n\n\n\n6. Living and surviving in the Thuringian Forest in earlier times\nHow did people live in the Thuringian Forest in earlier times\, when the environmental conditions were rough and harsh and technical possibilities of modern society did not yet exist? The excursion explores this question through the many traces and relics that can still be found in the region of the conference venue today. These include mills\, gold and slate mining\, glass production and cottage industry. The single points will be reached by minibuses\, shorter walks included. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTravel details\n\n\n\nTrain: In Schalkau there is a regional train station with connections towards Grimmenthal/Erfurt or Sonneberg/Coburg/Bamberg where you will have further connections to intercity trains. Please fill in this form on your travel details.  \n\n\n\nBus: There are a number of bus stops in the region. Howether\, direct access to Schalkau by bus is not possible. You would have to change to a train at some point during your journey.  \n\n\n\nCar: Schalkau is reachable by car via Autobahn 73. If you plan on coming by car and there are still free seats you can fill in this form\, so that other EGEANs can join the ride.   \n\n\n\nBike: Schalkau is located close to the european bike track “Green Belt”\, which runs along the former inner German border. If you choose to come by bike you will not only travel green but also on historic grounds! \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nOrgateam\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMax BuchhartMain OrganiserEGEA Jena \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJakob KaliskiMain OrganiserEGEA Bamberg \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSabrina KunzeFinance CoordinatorEGEA Jena \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMirjam SingerFinance CoordinatorEGEA Bamberg \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobin BurrFundraising CoordinatorEGEA Berlin \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaspar JahnScientific CoordinatorEGEA Jena \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeonie RohrbeckScientific CoordinatorEGEA Bamberg \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoe La FranceParticipant CoordinatorEGEA Berlin \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSimon LangeParticipant CoordinatorEGEA Bamberg \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura GroßProgram CoordinatorEGEA Jena \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTim KarnowskiProgram CoordinatorEGEA Berlin \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSophie-Marie HäringGreen CoordinatorEGEA Halle \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaria PrundisGreen CoordinatorEGEA Berlin \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLisa-Sophie SchwingePR / Design CoordinatorEGEA Halle \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\npartners\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\nRegistration will be open until the 12th December 2022. \n\n\n\nIn case of financial suppport needed please consider applying for Support Fund during the registration period. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Follow the WRC23 instagram and facebook page to not miss out on any new information.

SUMMARY:ERC 2023 - Living in the Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Next year’s Eastern Regional Congress will have the theme ‘Living in the Mountains’\, as the event will showcase the authentic mountainous life in Romania. Through the workshops\, the participants will discover aspects about geomorphology and geology\, cultural tourism\, traditional practices\, climate change and its impact and hydropower. It is going to be the perfect opportunity to explore a region with breathtaking nature and an unique character that stays unchanged throughout these dynamic times we now live in. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThe ERC will be take place in the Western Carpathians\, 1.5 hours away from the city of Cluj-Napoca. The location is close to the Apuseni Natural Park\, which encompasses extraordinary mountains\, forests\, waterfalls and caves\, some of which will be visited in the excursions of the workshops. The accomodation itself has a campfire place\, saunas\, 3 conference rooms\, a large field for football\, voleyball and horse riding\, and there is also a paintball field nearby. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nThe workshops we want to organise at the ERC will offer an insight into a variety of aspects relevant for this region of Romania: the dynamics and interactions of ethnicities\, the local traditions\, climate change and the processes through which the Carpathian mountain chain was formed\, which is perfectly described by the rocks. There will also be an additional\, special workshop about organising congresses. \n\n\n\nAll that being said\, we are starting the open call for workshop leaders! All you have to do is to look in the list bellow\, choose a workshop that catches your attention\, register through the RVSP and then send us an email with a motivational letter about why you want to lead that particular workshop and your experience in the topic. For those who want to apply to lead the workshop ‘How to organise a congress’\, we are looking for experienced people who have been either EPRA/EA\, or main coordinator of at least one congress\, or coordinator for at least 2 congresses (Participants coordinator\, Green coordinator etc). \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to the following address: erc2023@egea.eu \n\n\n\n\nGeomorphological mosaics\n\n\n\n\nThe Apuseni Mountains\, formed in alpine orogeny\, are relatively young mountains\, but have a wide variety of rocks – so this way\, we can talk about a so called “petrographical” mosaic. However\, the predominant formations are the limestones\, so we can bring into light one of the most iconic European karst regions. \n\n\n\n\nWater power\n\n\n\n\nRight after thermal energy\, hydropower is the main source of energy production in Romania (producing more than 25% of the total annual energy in the country). The region of Apuseni Mountains is one of the best regions for the placement of the hydropower stations. Would Apuseni Mountains have potential to also develop other types of renewable energy power plants? \n\n\n\n\nClimate change measurement and tracking\n\n\n\n\nClimate change\, one of the main contemporary issues\, has many visible effects all around the world. What is the impact of climate change on Apuseni Mountains – home of more than 30 natural habitats\, each with its own biodiversity? Will the intensification of natural hazards slow down even more the development of the people who live here? \n\n\n\n\nTraditional practices in the modern world\n\n\n\n\nAs in every mountain settlement in Romania\, pasturing\, subsistence farming and wood harvesting were always present in the area and the tradition is maintained until the present days. These practices shaped the landscapes and the biodiversity that can be found nowadays in the Apuseni Mountains. Across time\, regulations of the natural protected areas and higher market requirement for wood led to some illegal activities in the Romanian Carpathians. How do these activities impact the environment and the community? Which are the involved factors? \n\n\n\n\nCultural tourism\n\n\n\n\nRomanians\, Hungarians\, Germans. This is the shortest and most stereotypical description of Transylvania\, and by default of the Apuseni Mountains. Here\, the hard living conditions had made these people learn to cooperate\, building along the time a rich cultural heritage. What is the current status of these communities and how is their cooperation? Is the multiculturalism an element valued by the Transylvanian tourism? How can we successfully integrate the cultural diversity in the development of the tourism in the area? \n\n\n\n\nHow to organise a congrees?\n\n\n\n\nEveryone likes congresses\, right? This workshop will be dedicated to those who want to learn how to organise a congress. Whether a newbie or a more experienced EGEAn\, this workshop will be essential for them to gain an insight into the work that is done behind the scenes of such a large event. It is also a great opportunity for the people that will be in the OrgaTeams of the congresses in 2024 to get a jumpstart and already get accustomed to the work that has to be done in order to have a 5* congress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Romanian entities are delighted to organise the ERC 2023 and are waiting for you in the beautiful Carpathian Garden!
