SUMMARY:Annual Congress 2026: Wild Isles
DESCRIPTION:AC 2026 is organized by: EGEA Berlin\, EGEA Bochum\, EGEA Brussels\, EGEA Guildford\, EGEA Hannover\, EGEA Mainz\, EGEA Turku. \n\n\n\nOur congress will be about exploring the dynamic interplay across the landscapes of\, societies within and legacies created on the Isles of Britain. \n\n\n\nContact us\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOr email our participant team at participants-ac2026@egea.eu \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipant fee\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSee all participant fees per country or entity\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey facts\n\n\n\n\nWhere: Sayers Croft Field Centre\, Ewhurst\, United Kingdom\n\n\n\nWhen: 24th–29th August 2026\n\n\n\nCost: estimated 216 € (Group A)\n\n\n\nScientific theme: Landscapes\, Lives and Legacies\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nThe British Isles today are the result of a rich tapestry of events spanning from the dawn of continents to modern day geopolitics. These isles have sunbathed in Mediterranean seas during Pangea’s reign\, to later be moved and carved into the mosaic of morphologies you see today by fluvial and glacial processes. The fertile soils\, temperate conditions and abundant resources made the British Isles an attractive place to settle\, and generations of settlers and invaders have made their marks too. \n\n\n\nFrom tribal druidic Celts\, expansionist Romans\, opportunistic Pagan Anglo-Saxons and then the conquering Christian Normans\, all these cultures and societies mixed together with the unique landscapes to create some of the most famous myths and legends the UK has to offer; from Arthurian legend with Camelot and Merlin\, to Robin Hood and his band of Merry men\, to everyone’s favourite Loch Ness Monster\, Nessie. \n\n\n\nSo become part of the history\, explore these Wild Isles like those who have come before\, and let AC 2026 become part of this rich tapestry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Location\n\n\n\nSayers Croft Outdoor Learning Centre is located at the foot of the Surrey Hills National Landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Accommodation\n\n\n\n\nOur accommodation is a beautifully preserved piece of World War 2 evacuee history…\n\n\n\n…with it now being used as a modern day children’s residential camp.\n\n\n\nWith six spacious dormitories with common rooms\, 3 spacious fields with campfires…\n\n\n\n…GA/dance hall combo\, a refreshing swimming pool…\n\n\n\n…and with wonderful outdoor areas to relax and unwind.\n\n\n\nIt is an ideal location for Annual Congress 2026!\n\n\n\nNot to mention the various adventurous activities which can be facilitated right on site such as archery\, axe throwing\, high ropes\, climbing and catapult building!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Workshops\n\n\n\nThe scientific focus of the congress is built around three interconnected thematic pillars: Landscapes\, Lives and Legacies. \n\n\n\nThrough workshops and excursions\, the programme explores how physical landscapes have been shaped by geological and geomorphological processes\, and how human activity continues to transform them through land use\, conservation\, infrastructure and resource management. At the same time\, the congress addresses social and cultural dimensions of geography\, including education\, mobility\, agricultural practices and everyday life. A strong emphasis is placed on historical and long-term perspectives\, such as the evolution of settlements\, language\, and the lasting impacts of political and economic decisions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPublic transport: Equity derailed? A gender-inclusive perspective on British rail transit\nBy Henrik Stein (EGEA Osnabrück) and Ricarda Arens-Fischer (EGEA Bonn).Britain’s railways are often at the centre of debates about cost\, access\, and public service. But who benefits from the way transit systems are designed and who is left behind? This workshop invites participants to explore these questions through the lens of gender equity and to imagine new possibilities for the future of rail transport and transit planning as a whole. \n\n\n\n\nEnvironmental hope and youth perspectives in times of ecological crisis\nBy Krisztina Glück (EGEA Budapest) and Karolina Dyka (EGEA Krakow). How do we make sense of the ecological crisis without becoming overwhelmed by it? And how can education help transform anxiety into hope and action? This workshop invites participants to explore the intersections of environmental hope\, eco-anxiety\, sustainability education\, and the arts. Drawing on current research and an ongoing study with young people\, we will examine how environmental challenges shape our perceptions of the future and our sense of agency within it. Particular attention will be given to the role of artistic and creative approaches in understanding complex environmental issues\, fostering emotional engagement\, and imagining alternative futures. Through a combination of reflection\, discussion\, and experiential learning\, participants will explore their own relationships with nature\, place\, and environmental change. Together\, we will consider how education can cultivate hope\, resilience\, and meaningful engagement in times of ecological uncertainty. \n\n\n\n\nCulture\, history\, traditions and artifacts of Celtic people in Great Britain and Ireland\nBy Dariusz Ostrowski (EGEA Krakow) and Emilia “Leon” Stachucy (EGEA Krakow). The United Kingdom and Ireland have a rich and diverse culture that dates back thousands of years. Today\, however\, our understanding of the history of the British Isles is largely shaped by the English perspective. This workshop will change that by introducing you to the Celts\, their language\, traditions\, stories\, and myths. You will discover each of the Celtic nations: Wales\, Scotland\, Ireland\, Cornwall and the Isle of Man. We’ll work in groups to create posters\, and there will be a quiz and a brainstorming session. You will be able to create small plates from salt dough with different Celtic knots on them as a souvenir and part of the final project. This workshop focuses on cultural anthropology\, history and socioeconomic problems that those groups face. If this is something you would be interested in\, we highly recommend that you join us 🙂 \n\n\n\n\nBritpop: Culture\, class & identity on the dance floor\nBy Lotta Knorr (EGEA Hannover) and Paul Fürll (EGEA Mainz).Britpop\, a music movement that emerged in the 1990s in the UK and gained prominence through bands such as Blur\, Oasis\, and Suede\, offered musicians a space to articulate their realities without conforming to the dominant US-American pop culture. Singing in their own accents and about their own lived experiences in the UK became a key marker of identity and differentiation. In our workshop\, we’d like to use this as a basis to explore together the extent to which music\, culture\, and society influence one another and thereby (re)produce identity and class belonging.Together\, we will map brit pop\, dissect song texts and gather the results in different creative ways (with scissors & glue & schnipsels) – and\, of course\, listen to music. \n\n\n\n\nUK’s current climate policy on its economic direction\nBy Adam Šimkovič (EGEA Prague) and Martin Zmelty (EGEA Ostrava). The main goal of our workshops is to connect theoretical knowledge about the climate crisis and its impact on the economies of both developed and developing countries with practical approaches to addressing these challenges\, with a particular focus on the United Kingdom. Participants will also have the opportunity to tackle real-world problems that the country has been facing for many years and that\, despite significant efforts by the British government\, remain unresolved. \n\n\n\n\nGeomorphological legends: Between narrative and geological reality\nBy Martyna Kazlauskaitė (EGEA Vilnius) and Lilija Bałulis (EGEA Vilnius). This workshop explores the relationship between geomorphological processes and the cultural narratives that emerge around them. Across time\, communities have interpreted unfamiliar or hazardous landscapes through myths\, legends\, and storytelling. These narratives often reflect attempts to explain environmental phenomena before the development of scientific understanding.Through an immersive\, role-plav-based approach combined with scientific analysis and critical discussion\, participants will investigate how landscapes shape human perception\, memory\, and cultural identity \n\n\n\n\nRooted in common ground: Community ownership and the landscapes we share\nBy Heini Huovinen (EGEA Joensuu) and Melissa Klimenko (EGEA Joensuu).Have you ever wondered what happens when communities take ownership of the landscapes they live in? Or how different people can have vastly different outcomes in the same negotiations?Ownership creates a sense of investment in the area and community\, which in turn improves the quality of life. People active in the community also care more deeply about their environment. During the week you get to learn about different models of community ownership and the history of shared resource governance. We explore inspiring real cases from around Europe. We also go into the basics of negotiation. Going beyond theory\, you’ll get to practice negotiation skills and participate in a community role-play where you step into the shoes of different stakeholders navigating a shared resource challenge.Welcome to challenge traditional private ownership assumptions and try your hand in negotiation with us! \n\n\n\n\nLandscape character study\nBy Adrian Vodopija (EGEA Zagreb) and Peter Ule (EGEA Zagreb).Description of the Workshop: For geographers\, landscapes are more than visuals – they help us make better decisions about our surroundings. In our workshop\, you’ll complete a simple four-step landscape character study. Working in groups\, you’ll be assigned a landscape\, analyse it using provided materials such as photos\, maps or satellite images\, map it in GIS\, discuss its aspects\, and combine your work into a landscape atlas. After attending our workshop\, you will uncover the significance of landscapes in spatial and regional planning and discover the role of geographers in protecting endangered landscapes. You do not have to worry about the difficulty of the workshop or the use of GIS\, we will guide you through each step of the landscape assessment. All the steps we’ll encounter are simple and fully guided. \n\n\n\n\nReconstructing historical landscapes with AI\nBy Tobias Kisslinger (EGEA Berlin) and Jakob Von Brook (EGEA Hannover).Special fact about the area around the congress: Roman roads cross the ground beneath your feet\, and a river crossing has just been uncovered. But where did the road lead\, and why was it built? Can AI help us see what’s been lost?To find out\, you’ll combine archaeological evidence with modern AI.The arc of the workshop: \n\n\n\n\nField excursion. Visit excavated Roman road sections and the river crossing on the Sayers Croft grounds with local archaeologists. Collect your own data: GPS points\, photos\, field notes.\n\n\n\nWhere and Why? Explore how archaeologists reason about lost landscapes. How do topography\, settlements and finds combine into a hypothesis about a road no one has yet found?\n\n\n\nAI Lab. Get hands-on with methods of using generative AI\, led by Tobias (founder of an AI consultancy). Translate the archaeological evidence into prompts and create your own visual reconstruction of the Roman landscape\, right where you’re standing.\n\n\n\nYou’ll take away: practical AI skills (especially prompt engineering\, useful far beyond this workshop)\, a critical perspective on AI-supported reconstruction\, and a new perspective on the Roman landscape that surrounds the congress.\n\n\n\nWhat you need: No prior AI experience needed. You should ideally have some appreciation or interest in GIS tools and methods. Bring a laptop. 2–3 participants can share one device.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Trainings\n\n\n\nTrainings in EGEA are ways for other EGEAn’s and external partners to provide our members with quick useful insight into a new skill across a range of topics which they themselves are proficient in/at. Please read the descriptions below to see what we are offering! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEntering the Job Market as a Geographer – Your First Steps into the Professional World\nLead by Johannes Czerniak (EGEA Marburg). \n\n\n\nThis training gives you practical and honest insights into where geographers work\, how to apply successfully and what salary expectations are realistic. Together\, we explore career paths in the public and private sector to help you better understand your opportunities. A strong focus lies on identifying your skills and translating your studies\, internships and activities like EGEA into convincing arguments for your CV and cover letter. You are encouraged to bring your own applications to exchange ideas\, improve them directly and leave with clear tools for your career start. \n\n\n\n\nStretch Smarter\, Not Harder: The Guide to Effective Stretching\nLead by Eliška Pospěchová (EGEA Prague). \n\n\n\nWe all know we should stretch\, but are we actually doing it right? We will focus on fixing common stretching mistakes and debunking outdated myths. By the end of this session\, you will know how to stretch more effectively and work with your body’s mechanics instead of against them. Come ready to learn simple\, practical habits you can incorporate into your stretching routine! \n\n\n\n\nKeeping the flame alive – strategies to deal with burnout in volunteer settings\nLead by Carola Hintz (EGEA Mainz). \n\n\n\nAre you passionate about EGEA\, but sometimes wondering how to stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed? This interactive workshop helps EGEAns explore burnout through their own experiences and those of their peers\, creating a shared understanding of why burnout occurs in volunteer settings. Participants learn to recognize early warning signs and key risk factors\, practice practical prevention and communication strategies\, and leave with a personal action plan and a simple reset technique they can use in everyday volunteer life. \n\n\n\n\nHocus-pocus I have lost my focus – Effective learning strategies\nLead by Alexandra Nagel (EGEA Vienna). \n\n\n\nDid you know\, that pomodoro is not just delicious with pasta\, but can help you staying focused too? Together we will explore learning strategies and other techniques that can be used to design effective work sessions\, no matter if you need to study for an exam\, plan an event for EGEA or deal with your being-an-adult-responsibilities. We are going to learn about specific methods and concepts\, for example the pomodoro technique\, what is brain-friendly learning and how to apply it. Moreover\, we will exchange our own experiences\, tips\, and tricks and collectively build a toolbox to help you stay focused during your next productivity session. The workshop will be highly interactive\, combining energizing mini-games\, theoretical input\, and both individual and group activities to explore the topic together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Excursions\n\n\n\nGentle Stroll (easy hike) – Pitch Hill & Cranleigh walk\n\n\n\n\n\nA gentle climb up Pitch Hill\, then a scenic return through Cranleigh. Get ready to follow in the footsteps of past generations as you embark on the classic Sayers Croft Pitch Hill walk with an additional pub visit!– 12 km walk. \n\n\n\n\n\nLeisurely Constitutional (medium hike) – Milk Churn and Firebird Brewery visit\n\n\n\n\nA beautiful walk in the English countryside through woodlands and meadows\, next to cow pastures. SUMMARY:EMRC 2026 - PERIPHERY
DESCRIPTION:Organised by EGEA Tartu & EGEA Vilnius \n\n\n\nWe believe that in the periphery\, people find community and strength from each other\, different fields of science find ways to interlink and create breakthroughs\, necessity brings innovation and local cultures thrive. \n\n\n\nWith this congress\, we want to draw attention to an overlooked region and let its complex legacy and stories of foreign powers\, diverse cultural influences and resilient identity in the face of persecution be heard. The periphery here is not some margin\, but a place where overlooked stories can finally be heard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n75 participants \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nIn the center of Baltics\, Latvia is ready to welcome EGEA again after some time away to bring the Baltic geography community back together. We welcome you in so called ‘Switzerland of the Vidzeme Region’ or – Sigulda. The accommodation is located in Gauja national park and has lovely cottages\, a sports field\, a big common house\, and most importantly a sauna with a pond.75 people are welcome to join us in the countryside to participate in workshops\, excursions and evening programme.Find out more about our accomodation BRŪVERI here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to reach the accommodation?\n\n\n\nWe suggest travelling first to Sigulda. \n\n\n\nWe encourage you to choose green travel options to help minimise our carbon footprint. \n\n\n\nYou can take the train to Sigulda: \n\n\n\n🚅 directly from Riga (45 min to 1h 30 min) \n\n\n\n🚅 from Tartu (3h)\, Tallinn (5h to 5h 30min) or Vilnius (5h 30min). \n\n\n\nSee Latvian train timetables hereSee trains from Estonia here (use your ISIC card for student discount)See trains from Lithuania here (use your ISIC card for student discount) \n\n\n\n🚌From Riga\, there are also direct buses to Sigulda (1h). \n\n\n\nTo reach Riga\, we suggest looking into bus options with Flixbus or LuxExpress from Poland and the Baltics. \n\n\n\n✈️ If you prefer to travel by plane\, we recommend flying to Riga (or Tallinn or Vilnius if you would like to explore more of the Baltics). \n\n\n\nFrom Sigulda\, it is possible to take a regional bus part of the way towards the accommodation. Alternatively\, if you enjoy being active\, the accommodation is 4 km from Sigulda town centre and can also be reached on foot\, partly via a hiking trail. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvening programme\n\n\n\nFun evening entertainment is guaranteed every night. \n\n\n\n\n\nBalkan x Baltic Night \n\n\n\nOn the first day\, we’ll exchange our cultural treasures and get to know Latvia and how the Baltic and Balkan could be similar. To find our more or less Eastern European common ground\, the dress code for this evening is tracksuits like in the 90`s! \n\n\n\n\n\nCultural Fair \n\n\n\nOn the second evening we’ll have the familiar Cultural Fair. \n\n\n\nWear the colours and mood of your homeland! \n\n\n\n\n\nEGEA’s Got Talent and Auction \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, something new awaits –  EGEA’s GOT A TALENT! Every EGEA member\, whether alone or with friends\, can show a talent or share a great idea on stage. Everyone who takes part will get a prize. There’s no dress code\, but you’re welcome to wear your favourite stage outfit. Also\, feel free to bring something for the auction or just participate in bidding and buying for a better cause. \n\n\n\n\n\nPagan Themed Night \n\n\n\nThe final evening is Walpurgis Night and will be spent in a pagan spirit\, dancing around the bonfire\, learning folk dances and spell chants. Bring your most ragged peasant clothes\, or come as a crusader knight or a witch! \n\n\n\n\n\nworkshopS\n\n\n\n\nDigging Deeper: Soils as Archives of Human History\n\n\n\n\nLed by Bartłomiej Zawadzki & Anastazja Wasilewska (EGEA Toruń) \n\n\n\nThis workshop is about the soil cover of Gauja National Park and how the historical exploitation influences the landscape. During this workshop you will learn basic information about soil properties and types and understand how anthropogenic influence can change them. \n\n\n\n\nReading the Landscape – A Geomorphological Journey in the Mediterranean (with Baltic Perspectives)\n\n\n\n\nLed by Sarp Baran Kaplan (EGEA Izmir) \n\n\n\nThe main goal of this workshop is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how geomorphological processes shape our physical environment and to introduce them to the scientific methods used to decipher the history of Earth. The aim is to bridge the gap between pure Earth Sciences and Geoarchaeology\, showing how ancient landscapes influenced human settlements in the Mediterranean-Aegean region\, while also briefly touching upon the geomorphological dynamics of the Baltic geography.  \n\n\n\n\nSecurity & Borders in the Baltics: Life in the EU’s Eastern Periphery\n\n\n\n\nLed by Olivia Deman (EGEA Leuven) & Michael Maier (EGEA Graz) \n\n\n\nRecent years have brought significant shifts in worldwide geopolitics\, and the Baltic region finds itself at a crucial juncture. To understand the current dynamics in the Baltic region\, it is important to explore all the geopolitical processes shaping the region. By researching different roles\, participants will try to step in the shoes of different actors from the media\, civil society and governance. Afterwards\, participants will exchange their perspectives by filming a fictional news segment\, integrating all perspectives into a coherent video. \n\n\n\n\nBaltic Identity and periphery: How geography shapes who we are?\n\n\n\n\nLed by Pierre Berthou (EGEA Lyon) & Ewen Nowaczyk (EGEA Clermont-Ferrand) \n\n\n\nThis workshop aims to introduce participants to the geographical concepts of identity and periphery through the case study of the Baltic States. \n\n\n\n\nPeripheral areas in your country – identification and solutions\n\n\n\n\nLed by Julianna Bieńkowska & Wojciech Olsza (EGEA Kraków) \n\n\n\nThe main idea of the workshop is for its participants to identify peripheral or depopulated areas in their home countries and propose solutions that could improve the situation of these problematic regions. Most countries belonging to the East & Mediterranean Region have such regions\, and we believe that each workshop participant will be able to name such an area in their country. \n\n\n\nTrainings\n\n\n\n\nMind–Body Integration: Psychological Resilience Through Movement \n\n\n\n\nLed by Anna Mykych (EGEA Kraków) \n\n\n\nThis workshop focuses on developing psychological resilience\, self-awareness\, and leadership presence through the integration of soft skills psychology and simple physical practices. Participants will explore how stress\, attention\, emotions\, and inner stability are connected to the body. \n\n\n\n\nReflecting\, Journaling\, and Meditation – Finding Your Inner Peace\n\n\n\n\nLed by Marielle Barwich & Max Wassum (EGEA Marburg) \n\n\n\nThis training focuses on mental health\, journaling\, and reconnecting with your inner voice. In our busy daily lives\, it is often challenging to stay connected to ourselves and even harder to treat ourselves with kindness. Negative thoughts are usually much easier to follow than positive ones\, and that is precisely why this training is so necessary. \n\n\n\n\nBrain battle: Chess for beginners\n\n\n\n\nLed by Björn Kirchner & Teresa Conze (EGEA Marburg)  \n\n\n\nChess Workshop for beginners. \n\n\n\nExcursions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSigulda hike along Gauja valley \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour in Sigulda \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of Cēsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of Līgatne with cliffs and unique architecture (easy)\n\n\n\n\nLocated in the heart of Gauja National Park\, Līgatne stands out in Latvia not as a medieval town\, but as a purpose-built industrial settlement. It developed in the 19th century around its paper mill\, which became one of the most important paper producers in the region. Unlike many historic towns that grew organically over centuries\, Līgatne was shaped by industry. Its wooden workers’ houses\, arranged in rows along the valley slopes\, reflect a planned community where housing\, work\, and daily life were closely connected. During the excursion\, we will visit the historic paper mill to learn how paper was produced and how industrialisation influenced both the economy and social structure of the area. The town’s sandstone cave basements\, carved directly into the cliffs\, were used by residents for food storage and remain a visible reminder of practical adaptation to the local environment. In addition to its 19th-century heritage\, Līgatne also has a lesser-known 20th-century layer of history\, including Cold War–era infrastructure hidden beneath the landscape. The excursion will also include a stop by the Amata River and the scenic Zvārtes iezis\, where the river’s rapids flow beneath one of Latvia’s most striking sandstone formations. \n\n\n\n\nScenic Sigulda hike along Gauja Valley (easy to medium)\n\n\n\n\nSigulda is often referred to as one of Latvia’s most scenic towns\, situated in the valley of the Gauja River within Gauja National Park. The Gauja Valley is known for its sandstone outcrops\, forested slopes\, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the river. This excursion offers two hiking options of different difficulty levels\, allowing participants to choose according to their preference. Both routes lead through the Gauja River valley\, passing some of the most impressive viewpoints in the area. Along the way\, we will explore the natural relief of the valley\, descend and ascend its characteristic slopes. The hike concludes at Turaida Castle\, a medieval stone castle complex overlooking the valley. Here\, participants will have the opportunity to explore the castle grounds and learn about its historical role in the region. This excursion is ideal for those interested in combining physical activity with landscape appreciation and historical context. \n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of medieval town Cēsis (easy)\n\n\n\n\nCēsis is one of the oldest towns in Latvia\, with origins dating back to the 13th century. It became an important medieval center during the Livonian Order period and retains a clearly recognizable old town layout. The narrow streets\, market square\, and historic buildings reflect centuries of urban development and make Cēsis one of the most atmospheric historic towns in the country. A central highlight of the excursion is the visit to Cēsis Castle\, widely regarded as one of the best-preserved medieval castle ruins in the Baltic region. Visitors can explore the remaining towers and walls\, gaining insight into medieval defensive architecture and the political importance of the site. The excursion also includes a visit to Ērgļu klintis (Eagle Cliffs)\, one of the longest sandstone cliff faces in Latvia. These cliffs rise along the Gauja River and provide an impressive example of the region’s geological formations. The combination of urban medieval heritage and nearby natural landmarks makes Cēsis a balanced choice for those interested in both history and landscape. \n\n\n\n\nHike along the Vidzeme Seaside (medium)\n\n\n\n\nThe Vidzeme coast in northern Latvia offers a diverse view of the country’s coastline. Unlike the long sandy beaches often associated with Latvia’s western coast\, this region has sandy strips\, rocky beaches\, coastal meadows\, and sandstone outcrops. The landscape along the route changes significantly\, illustrating the diversity of Latvia’s coastal nature. During the excursion\, we will see sandy beaches formed by waves and wind\, rocky shores created by glacial activity\, and open coastal meadows where unique plant and bird species can be found. The diversity of the terrain makes this area particularly suitable for those interested in coastal geography and nature. The highlight of the cultural excursion is a visit to the Ainaži Maritime School Museum in the border town of Ainaži. The former maritime school played an important role in the development of Latvian maritime traditions in the 19th century. The museum provides an insight into Latvia’s maritime heritage and the education of sailors and ship captains. This excursion combines nature exploration with an understanding of the history of Latvia’s coast and sea. \n\n\n\nWhy us?\n\n\n\nOur team is committed and experienced in organising events. We organised the North & Baltic Congress in 2023 and 2024. For the past 12 years\, we have continued the Baltic Weekend tradition\, organising it on a rotating basis between Lithuania and Estonia each year. In 2024\, the event took place in Latvia again. We therefore have the experience needed to organise a fun East & Mediterranean Congress in Latvia. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions/ideas\, please do not hesitate to contact us at: emrc2026@egea.eu \n\n\n\nMeet the orgateam\n\n\nOrga team of EMRC 2026Main orgaScience teamMedia teamProgramme teamHelping handsParticipant team + photographerGreen team + helping hands\n\n\nMain orga: Jonas\, Laura Heleene\, Regina \n\n\n\nExcursion coordinator: Edvards \n\n\n\nFinance and fundraising: Regina\, Artūrs \n\n\n\nGreen coordinator: Annabel \n\n\n\nScience coordinator: Adomas\, Martyna \n\n\n\nMedia\, design & merch: Liis-Ellen\, Mia Marie \n\n\n\nParticipant coordinator: Agnes\, Livija \n\n\n\nDay and night programme: Lauri\, Lilija \n\n\n\nHelping hands: Heli\, Triinu\, Hendrik\, Mattias\, Mikas\, Gintarė and Helena \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram

SUMMARY:Western Regional Congress 2025: Catan's Compass
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\n\n\n\nHello and welcome to the official web page of the Western Regional Congress 2025 hosted by EGEA Leuven and EGEA Brussels! \n\n\n\n\nThe strategic location of Flanders in Europe has resulted in the fact that it held the highest population in northwestern Europe for centuries. In Flanders a city is always in close proximity. This makes that people can live in the countryside and work in the city. This makes that the border between countryside and city becomes very fuzzy. Competition for land is very strong in Flanders\, and in the last 50 years the spatial planning was unsatisfactory. This caused that ribbon development was able to appear. Primarly in the Campine area this phenomenon is very common. Therefore\, it is very difficult to make efficient public transport and to connect natural areas. The negative consequences go however much futher than this. Flanders face many sustainable land use challenges. Protecting further hardening of the land will be key to maintain groundwater levels and prevent flooding\, but legislation is often blocked in the Belgian Parliament. \n\n\n\nJust like the boardgame Catan\, land use is important in the real life as well\, and the land uses of the past can have a great impact on the land use of the future. Together with our partners we\, the WRC 2025 Orga Team\, are happy to show European geographers what challenges keep Belgian geographers up at night. \n\n\n\n\nWhen is the wrc?\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganised by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? The floods in 2021 in Wallonia were a good example of Belgium’s poor river management. Dike-building at the seaside could also be interesting\n\n\n\nA workshop about the urban planning or public transport challenges in Belgium because of it’s typical ribbon urban sprawl patterns\n\n\n\nA workshop about how historic maps can be used as a scientific data source\, especially the Belgian Ferrarismaps which are highly detailed land cover maps from the 18th century.\n\n\n\nA workshop about the local economic development\, especially local beers and fruits \n\n\n\nA workshop about regional rural development\, especially because of the LEADER+ program active in most Belgian rural areas. \n\n\n\n\nTraining/Skill session\n\n\n\n\nApply to become a Trainer/Skill session leader! This is a short training session for participants to follow to enhance certain life or organisational or other skills. If you would like to become a Trainer/ Skill session leader at the WRC you can register here via this forms: TRAINING/ SKILL SESSION LEADER REGISTRATION FORMS. PROLONGED DEADLINE AS LONG AS THERE ARE WORKSHOP LEADERS NEEDED. Be fast if you want a fixed spot at the WRC! \n\n\n\n\nLeisure excursion\n\n\n\n\nHike – Herentals: The Capital of the Campine region\nHerentalsExplore this lovely city which had a significant impact on the regional development of the Campine region. We will explore the historic city centre\, the Begijnhof\,the ‘lakenhal’ and a number of medieval churches. \n\n\n\n\nHike – Visit the regional landscape park Kleine & Grote Nete\nThe Regional Landscape ‘Kleine & Grote Nete” is the regional ecological management organisation in the Campine region. They have a wide array of experts and partners that work together to implement different constructive and sustainable projects. Their projects revolve around nurturing the region\, safeguarding and improving biodiversity and nature. They also have projects focusing on recreation\, leisure and heritage. This leisure excursion will walk through the regional landscape\, which our accomodation is part of\, and will show you a few of their amazing projects. \n\n\n\n\nEasy Bike – Goat farm and the gnome-forest\nOn this leisure excursion\, you’ll visit a nearby goat farm (yes normally you’ll be able to pet the goats). Afterwards\, you’ll go for a short hike in the gnome-forest! 🙂 \n\n\n\n\nMystery leisure excursion\nPlay\n\n\n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\nAccomodation\n\n\n\nPreviously a munition depot of the Belgian army\, De Hoge Rielen has become one of the most famous youth centers in Belgium. Located in the heart of the Campine (Kempen) area\, in the middle of a forested area\, we’ll be bringing all-European vibrations to this quiet area. We have booked two buildings\, adding up to 105 spots for participants in addition to the Orga Team. The rooms are mostly for 4 persons. The bathrooms are located on the corridor. We look forward to giving you the awesome congress experience in this wonderful accomodation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\nHow to get there\n\n\n\nTrainCar/CarpoolingBusCycling/HitchhikingPlane \n\nWhich station do I go to?\n\n\n\nThe quickest ways to get to Belgium are 1) Night trains: European NightJet goes from Prague and Berlin\, or from Venice and Innsbruck. ÖBB has a night train from Vienna and München to Brussels 2) During the day\, there are high speed trains arriving from all over Europe to Antwerp or Brussels. From both Antwerp and Brussels\, there are direct trains to Tielen. \n\n\n\nThe station of Tielen is located around 20 minutes walking from the accommodation. In Tielen there are not a lot of opportunities to buy food for lunch on monday noon so if you have the time\, you should do that in one of the bigger cities. \n\n\n\nWhat is the best train fare for me?\n\n\n\nIn Belgium train tickets do not change their price based on how much on beforehand you buy them. Always try to buy your train ticket before you get on the train. If you buy them in the train you have to pay an extra 7 euros. You can buy tickets via the NMBS/SNCB app quite easily. Otherwise you can always buy them in the blue vending machines in every train station. Below you have our recommendations. Do some math to find out which type of ticket is more advantageous for you. If you’re not sure\, you can always contact us through our instagram\, LinkedIn or via e-mail (wrc2025@egea.eu) and we’ll gladly help you! \n\n\n\nSolo traveller \n\n\n\n\nIf you are younger than 26 you should buy a Youth Ticket -26. This reduces the fare to €7\,50 euros per journey. This applies between every pair of Belgian (and Luxemburg) train stations. This also only applies for one specific route\, so if you want to do a city trip before going to the accommodation location\, be sure to check whether or not the city is on route to the accommodation. It does not matter if you take a Belgian or Dutch train on the Belgian territory. This ticket however DOES NOT apply to any high speed firms or night trains. With an ICE ticket you are also not allowed to get onto Eurostar or the other way around.\n\n\n\nIt’s important to note: The Youth Ticket -26 is NOT always the cheaper option. Be sure to check the standard fare because for short journeys this might actually be cheaper than €7.5\n\n\n\n\nGroups \n\n\n\n\nGroups are recommended to buy a Youth Multi\, which has 10 rides on it\, not connected to a name. This can be bought at a train station for 62 euro or you can buy it directly from the NMBS/SNCB app for €60. The paper version you will have to fill in with a pen. The app version can be activated in the NMBS/SNCB app (and has to be activated multiple times depending on how many you are travelling with).\n\n\n\nThe Orga Team is also going to do a city tour of Leuven on Friday afternoon after the WRC. For this the transportation costs are not included in the price of the WRC.\n\n\n\n\nDepending on your itinerary\, it can be much cheaper to buy a domestic ticket in one of the neighboring countries until the last stop before crossing the border into Belgium (for example Aachen/ Lille). When you get in the last stop\, it can be cheaper to buy a ticket for the short journey between the two border stops. Once in Belgium\, you can use the Youth Pass or Youth Multi to get from the border town all the way to Tielen with just one ticket. This ticket is difficult to find online\, therefore\, I would buy it at the blue vending machine of the Belgian train company (SNCB/NMBS) in the foreign station. \n\n\n\n\n\nCar\n\n\n\nIf you are visiting some cities in Belgium\, a Low Emission Zone might apply\, which means your car needs to be of a certain environmental standard. These LEZ are enforced in Ghent\, Antwerp and Brussels. You can check if your car is allowed here: There are park and rides on the city margins. \n\n\n\n\nGhent \n\nhttps://lez.stad.gent/en/flows/controleertoegang\n\n\n\n\n\nAntwerp\n\nhttps://lez.antwerpen.be/?taal=EN\n\n\n\n\n\nBrussels\n\nhttps://lez.brussels/mytax/en/\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarpoolsheet\n\n\n\nIn order to promote more sustainable ways of travel\, we greatly encourage all participants coming by car with some seats left to register in the carpoolsheet. You can give your starting location and your route so people could be picked up along the way. This saves costs and is more sustainable then everyone driving alone. This is also a great way to meet people! The carpoolsheet will be communicated to the participants later on! \n\n\n\n\n\nBus\n\n\n\nThere are flixbus stations in Antwerp\, Brussels and Turnhout. From Turnhout it makes more sense to take a bus instead of train to the accomodation. Belgian buses cost around 2 euros. In Flanders\, you should buy tickets from DeLijn (yellow buses) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nCycling\n\n\n\nBiking infrastructure is great in the Netherlands and Belgium so feel free to come by bike. You should bring a lock with you as well to safely store your bike during the WRC! \n\n\n\nHitchhiking\n\n\n\nHitchhiking is not common but can be done as well. Any clothes that show that you are a talkative youngster and sign that shows where you want to go will help to get you there in no time. \n\n\n\n\n\nPlane\n\n\n\nWhilst we do not support plane travel because of its high emissions\, we do understand that for some people it is quite unrealistic to make the journey to the WRC by train\, bus or car. Here are some tips to get to the accomodation quickly and cheaply. \n\n\n\nBrussels Airport-Zaventem (BE)\n\n\n\nIf you fly to Brussels Airport Zaventem\, you can take the train from Brussels Airport to Tielen with one change. Remember\, you have to pay an Airport Tax of 6 euros if you take the train from and to the airport. If you really don’t have any money and you want to be extra cheap\, you can walk or take the bus to another station. There you don’t have to pay an airport tax. The most convenient route is to just take the train from Brussel Airport. For more information about train fares\, check the train section \n\n\n\nEindhoven Airport (NL)\n\n\n\nThis airport is located close to Eindhoven in the Netherlands. They have plenty of cheap flights from airlines like WizzAir and Ryanair. From Eindhoven\, you can take the train from Eindhoven-Centraal to Breda\, then to Antwerp-Berchem and from there to Tielen. You can get your tickets from this site: https://www.b-europe.com/EN (don’t forget to change your age to get youth discount!) \n\n\n\nCharleroi Airport- Brussels South (BE)\n\n\n\nThis airport is NOT near Brussels at all\, but it does have more cheaper flights. You get to Tielen the quickest way by taking the shuttle bus from the airport straight to Brussels-South station. In Brussel you can take a direct train to Tielen. Note: Check in which train station you arrive with the shuttle bus and if you can get a direct train to Tielen from there. For more information about train fares\, check the train section.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Karstic Weekend ’24\, an EGEA Zadar event in Croatia’s captivating Velebit karst region where mountains meet the sea! Join us to explore this unique land—caves\, dolines and much more. Dive into nature’s mysteries\, from forests to the magic of coastal karst\, all amidst the embrace of Croatia’s stunning geography! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nHostel Čelina\n\nHostel Čelina“An oasis on the coastal side of Velebit“\n\n\n\n\nNestled along the coastal side of Velebit\, you’ll find the charming Hostel Čelina\, a hub of warmth and hospitality year-round\, managed by Božena Radošević and her mother Marija\, with the helping hands of their two teenage daughters during school breaks. Every detail of this accommodation is carefully crafted\, from the thoughtfully designed interiors to the eco-friendly materials used throughout\, creating a serene oasis where guests can feel at home. The ever-changing weather\, with its sudden shifts and dramatic Velebit storms\, adds a touch of excitement to the experience\, reminding us of nature’s power and endless variety.Perched nearly 700 meters above sea level\, the air here is refreshingly pure\, offering a cool retreat from the summer heat\, while the sparkling sea lies just a brief 10-minute journey away. It’s a blend of climates and temperatures\, where guests can slumber peacefully amidst the gentle slopes of Velebit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBaške Oštarije\nBaške Oštarije is one of the rare settlements in the peak area of Velebit. It is located by the road Gospić-Karlobag\, at the border of the Central and Southern Velebit.Once upon a time there was a Venetian merchant caravan on this important Velebit passage and the place became known as the Oštarije. The name Oštarije comes from the Romance languages (tal. osteria – tavern). They are situated at 924 meters above sea level and are surrounded by beautiful Dabri and Dabar peaks. Dabar not only a name for beaver in Croatia (there are none here)\, but also for the special Velebit valleys with the flat bottom. The village was established following the construction of Karolina Road. The Military Frontier Management encouraged settlement near the road in Oštarijsko polje field to support travelers and those involved in transportation. Houses were provided by the Military Frontier Management\, allowing settlers to cultivate cleared land for farming and livestock. Increased trade between the continent and coastal areas eventually attracted more residents to the village. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNP Paklenica\nThe Paklenica karst river canyon is a national park in Croatia. Due to its unique natural features\, magnificent forests\, and extraordinary geomorphologic structures\, the area of Velika and Mala Paklenica was proclaimed a national park in 1949. The main reason for proclaiming this area a national park was the protection of the largest and best-preserved forest complex in the territory of Dalmatia\, which was threatened by overexploitation. The Paklenica National Park covers an area of 95 km2 and includes the highest peaks of the Velebit Mountain – Vaganski vrh (1752 m a.s.l.) and Sveto brdo (1753 m a.s.l.).The name Paklenica probably derives from Black Pine sap called “paklina”\, which the locals used in traditional medicine\, for wound treatment\, for light\, and for coating wooden boats (but it also sounds like “hellish” – “pakleno” lol). It covers the area of torrent flows of Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica\, and their distinctive canyons carved vertically into the southern slopes of the Velebit Mountain as well as their surrounding area. The relatively small area has an abundance of geomorphological phenomena and forms\, diverse flora and fauna\, attractive landscapes and intact nature. Near the entrance to the Velika Paklenica is an artificial tunnel complex built for Josip Broz Tito during the tension between Yugoslavia and the USSR in the late 1940s and early 1950s (that’s the real important info haha\, but tbh we might have have a presentation in here). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaves\nWe will have the opportunity to show you two wonderful caves as well:Modrič Cave\, located in the town of Rovanjska\, offers a journey into an underground world. Stretching 829 meters\, this natural wonder provides an authentic experience without concrete paths and bright lights. You can see stunning formations\, including stalactites\, stalagmites\, and unique speleo themes resembling jellyfish and more. With its spacious chambers and consistent temperature of 16-17°C\, Modrič Cave promises an unforgettable adventure. \n\n\n\n Modrič cave (Croatia) by Geospatial Analysis Laboratory Zadar on Sketchfab \n\n\n\nNestled within Paklenica National Park\, Manita Peć is the other cave on our karst advnture. As the only show cave open to the public\, it has captivated visitors since 1937. It has incredible expansive chambers adorned with exquisite speleothems\, including stalagmites\, stalactites\, columns\, and flowstones. Each formation\, such as the Helmet\, the Organ\, and the Witch\, tells a fascinating story of natural beauty and wonder. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n\n\n\nPrepare to delve into the captivating world of karstology and related sciences! Upon arrival in Gospić\, we’ll explore Nikola Tesla’s early life in the nearby village of Smiljan. Our journey begins with a lecture on karst by our wonderful professor from the University of Zadar’s Geography Department. The following day\, a karst researcher will lead us on an exciting expedition to Modrič cave and Paklenica National Park\, promising a delightful mix of caves\, rivers\, and stunning landscapes! \n\n\n\nExpect an engaging scientific theme throughout Saturday with workshops facilitated by our enthusiastic geographers and karst scientists\, covering topics like GIS and Karst research. Meanwhile\, another exciting excursion near our accommodation awaits\, featuring the breathtaking Premužić Path. And fear not\, our weekend won’t be solely about science! We’ll sprinkle in some classic EGEA fun and Croatian adventures for an unforgettable experience! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHOW TO GET TO GOSPIĆ\n\n\n\nTo get to Gospić from Zagreb and Zadar\, here’s a breakdown of transportation options: \n\n\n\n\nBy Bus:\nFrom Zagreb: \n\n\n\n\nBus Operators: FlixBus\, Velebit Tours\, Samoborček\, Arriva Croatia\n\n\n\nFlixBus operates buses to Gospić three times a day\, with tickets costing between €17 – €24. SUMMARY:Scientific Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nForest under Pressure\n\n\n\nThe majority of current forest ecosystems are subject to a number of natural disturbances (e.g. drought and extreme weather events) that can adversely affect their health and vitality by causing tree mortality or reducing their ability to provide goods and services. Extended to a larger scale\, these outcomes will have multiple effects on biosphere-atmosphere interactions. This will play an important role in future water-carbon cycle feedbacks through complex effects on forest biophysical properties and biogeochemical cycles. Understanding the dynamics\, processes\, and effects of tree mortality and related forest die-offs from drought is a vital step in identifying innovative practices and success factors to mitigate these effects. This requires crossing scales and disciplines ranging from physiology and ecology to vegetation modelling and forest management. We aim to gather a broad range of observational\, theoretical\, and experimental studies\, spanning a range of scales and conditions often characterised by a multidisciplinary approach.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Motivation\n\n\n\nRecognising the urgency of the situation\, scientists\, researchers\, policymakers\, and stakeholders need to come together to share knowledge\, expertise\, and innovative solutions to tackle this complex issue. This will ensure the sustainable management and conservation of forests for present and future generations. Our institute of Geography is carrying out research in the Hainich National Park in human and physical geography\, as well as remote sensing and GIS on this particular topic. Through interdisciplinary approaches and evidence-based discussions\, a scientific conference can foster collaborations\, generate new ideas\, and inform policy decisions to effectively address the pressing challenges faced by forests worldwide. Together with our Institute of Geography and local authorities we want to show some examples of how sustainable forest management can be addressed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOSTSLocationHow to get there\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n90 Euro\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSponsored & supported by:\n\n\n\n\nThüringenForst\n\n\n\nFriedrich-Schiller-University Jena\n\n\n\nHainich Nationalpark\n\n\n\nDigital Forest Project\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe SciCon2023 is taking place in the Hainich National Park in the wooden heart in the middle of Germany. The accommodation is located on a green meadow in the middle of beech forests (UNESCO World Heritage Site). It is the ideal starting point for our excursions and field work. We can relax at the bonfire in the evenings after a long day in the field or chill in the sauna (so don’t forget to bring your swimwear and towel). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince we are literally in the middle of a forest\, there is no public transportation to get there. The nearest train station is Mühlhausen/Thüringen\, approx. an hour apart from Erfurt. \n\n\n\nHere are the three possible routes from Erfurt to Mühlhausen:\n\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 12:33 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 13:25\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 13:07 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:15\n\n\n\nDeparture Erfurt at 14:04 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:57\n\n\n\n\nHere are the three possible routes from Göttingen to Mühlhausen:\n\n\n\n\nDeparture Göttingen 13:14 – Change in Eichenberg at 13:28 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:31\n\n\n\nDeparture Göttingen 14:08 – Arrival Mühlhausen at 14:58\n\n\n\n\nWe will offer 2 shuttle times from Mühlhausen to the accommodation\, which you will have to sign up for via email:\n\n\n\n\nShuttle 1: 14:45\n\n\n\nShuttle 2: 15:30\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 1Workshop 2Workshop 3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Dendrochronological View in the Past Century\n\n\n\nBy Dr. Gottfried Jetschke & Prof. Dr. Zech\n\n\n\nStep into the captivating world of dendrochronology within the lush embrace of Hainich National Park. In this workshop\, you’ll embark on a compelling journey to explore how trees respond to recent dry summer years. Through hands-on experience\, you’ll venture into the forest to gather sample cores from ancient trees. These cores will then be meticulously sanded and polished\, enabling us to measure the tree-ring width with extraordinary precision\, down to 0.01 mm. In a fascinating twist\, you’ll compare the annual growth increments during dry years to the average growth\, allowing us to create characteristic indices. These indices will provide us with insights into how trees adapt to environmental shifts\, particularly in response to summer temperature and rainfall. This workshop caters to the curious minds and budding scientists\, offering not just theoretical knowledge\, but the chance to be an active participant in deepening our understanding of nature’s intricate workings. Join us for an enlightening and adventurous voyage through time\, as we decode the secrets hidden within the ancient trees of Hainich National Park. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring Ecohydrology\n\n\n\nSession 1 by Sophia Sieber & Marcus Böhm \n\n\n\nSession 2 By Prof. Dr. Beate Michalzik & Prof. Dr. Anke Hildebrandt\n\n\n\nThis workshop\, hosted at Hainich National Park\, focuses on intensive forest monitoring for water and matter transport. It’s part of the Hainich Critical Zone Observatory\, linked to Collaborative Research Centre 1076 “AquaDiva.” The aim is to understand the connection between surface and subsurface water\, local geology’s impact on subsurface diversity and ecology. Together you will collect water samples from various forest areas\, measuring volume\, nitrate content\, and pH. Participants will also discuss climate change’s effects on water flow and quality. Additionally\, soil respiration rates and pH will be measured in various locations and tree species to understand their influence on carbon release. In summary\, this workshop offers insights into field monitoring in ecohydrology and biogeochemistry\, hands-on experience\, and discussions on climate change’s impact on forest ecosystem processes\, particularly water and nutrient cycling. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnvironmental Modelling\n\n\n\nBy David Montero\, Dr. Anne Klosterhalfen & Dr. Franziska Köbsch\n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging workshop on Earth Observation (EO) data management and analysis. This hands-on session immerses you in the world of remote sensing\, where you’ll learn to manipulate EO data cubes\, perform spatio-temporal operations\, and conduct spectral transformations—all within the user-friendly Python environment on Google Colab. But there’s more to this workshop than digital analysis. You’ll also gain practical knowledge about the Eddy Covariance technique\, which measures gas exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere\, and even have the unique opportunity to climb the flux tower where these measurements occur (be aware of heights). Our primary focus in this workshop is understanding Gross Primary Production (GPP) using EO data. We’ll show you how to compare your findings with GPP data collected from the Hainich Eddy Covariance tower\, bridging the gap between theory and real-world applications. You’ll also explore both linear and non-linear methods for inferring GPP\, providing valuable insights into the role of remote sensing in environmental monitoring and research. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience\, this workshop offers an immersive experience in data analysis and environmental exploration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrainings\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraining 1Training 2Training 3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMake your CV stand out\n\n\n\nBy Wiebke Breternitz\n\n\n\nIn today’s competitive job market\, a well-crafted CV can be the key to opening doors to your dream career. SUMMARY:Karstic Weekend '23
DESCRIPTION:An event by EGEA Ljubljana organized in the heart of the Slovene karstic region surrounded by the forested Dinaric mountains. Participants will discover this unique area of Slovene geography and all of its characteristics\, from caves\, poljes\, dolines\, its history\, settlement\, bears\, forests and everything inbetween with the help of karst researchers and experts in the field. \n\n\n\nApplications have closed but keep a close eye on our Instagram page for any updates and possible last minute spots! \n\n\n\nLOCATION\n\n\n\nThe event will take place in the village of Nova Štifta\, 10 min away from the town of Ribnica located about an hour south of Ljubljana by train. The area is famous for its centuries old woodenware tradition and\, of course\, for its karstic plateaus\, poljes\, dolines\, rivers and forests\, which hide populations of all three of the large carnivores living in Slovenia – wolves\, bears and lynx! Participants will be staying in a monastery right next to one of the most important pilgrimage churches of the area\, perched on a little hill overlooking the karstic Ribnica polje and on the edge of the forested Dinaric mountains. The event will start in Ribnica\, which can easily be reached by train and bus from Ljubljana; the rest of the transport until our goodbyes in Ribnica on Sunday will be taken care off by us and is already included in the participation fee! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n\n\n\nWe will work together with institutions and societies connected to karst to give you an insight into this interesting and maybe lesser known field of geography and other connected sciences. After arriving to Ribnica and getting a feel for the local culture and geography\, we will organize an introductory lecture on all things karst given by one of the researchers from the Department of Geography of the University of Ljubljana. Next day\, a karst researcher from the Department will guide an excursion to the poljes of Clasiccal karst and the Križna cave. Stay tuned for more details\, but there will definitely be plenty of caves\, dolines\, poljes\, karstic rivers etc. involved! The scientific theme will continue on Saturday with workshops organized by even more geographers and other karst scientists on various topics (The management of large carnivores in the Dinarides\, Wind power production possibilities and limitations on karst\, others TBA)\, while there will be another half day excursion held in the vicinity of the accomodation in the afternoon. Of course the whole weekend won’t be just karst and science\, EGEA classics and plenty of Slovene experiences will also make an appearance! \n\n\n\n\nSome sights from the area which we will probably discover during the weekend 🙂 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHOW TO GET TO RIBNICA\n\n\n\nRibnica is easily reachable by public transport from Ljubljana\, while reaching it from other cities in Slovenia or Croatia without transfering in Ljubljana will be quite a challenge. Ljubljana is well connected to other European cities by frequent Flixbus connections\, nightrains and other international train connections (use the Deutsche Bahn website to find connections)\, while arriving by plane to Ljubljana airport might not be the cheapest option due to a lack of low cost carriers (consider Tarvisio\, Trieste or Zagreb instead if flying is a must). \n\n\n\n\nBY TRAIN\nRibnica is easily reachable by train\, since it lies on the trainline between Ljubljana and Kočevje\, which was completely renovated in the past years with brand new train stations. There are 11 trains a day from Ljubljana\, with most journeys requiring an easy transfer in the town of Grosuplje. You can check the timetable and buy tickets on the webpage of Slovene railways. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBY BUS\nThere are hourly buses to Ribnica leaving from the Main bus station in Ljubljana (often called Ljubljana AP on the bus timetables)\, right in front of the Main train station. You can use the website of the Ljubljana bus station to check for the bus timetables. Unfortunately you cannot check for journeys which require a transfer\, so if you are coming from Bled for instance\, you have to check separately for the connection first to Ljubljana AP and from there to Ribnica. The two main bus companies in this part of the country are Arriva and Nomago. The correct name of the bus station in Ribnica is Ribnica na Dolenjskem. \n\n\n\nMost buses to Ribnica are bound to Kočevje\, so look for signs to Kočevje and/or Ribnica on the bus station in Ljubljana. You can buy the ticket directly from the bus driver\, but beware\, it’s cash only and the bus drivers might not accept 50€ bills. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBY CAR\nIf you are travelling by car\, there is ample parking space available in the centre of Ribnica\, most of it free\, so finding a place to park before heading to the accommodation shouldn’t pose a problem. There is also a large parking lot next to the Rokodelski center if the parking spots in the centre will be taken. There is also enough parking space next to our accommodation in Nova Štifta\, where you can park after the opening ceremony in Ribnica. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor any questions regarding getting to the Karstic Weekend or tips for things to see in Slovenia before or after the event\, don’t hesitate to contact us on Instagram or write us on Whattsapp (+386 64 150 086).

You gonna have an opportunity to learn something new\, meet new people and get back to your roots!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExcursions\n\n\n\n\nKayaking trip\nkayaking along the Krutynia river\, which is the most popular route in Poland. The section that we will be wandering is about 9 kilometers long and takes between 2  to 3 hours. The river is shallow and calm\, so you don’t need any extra skills or abilities to take part in it! \n\n\n\n\nBicycle tour\nbiking across the beautiful landscapes of Mazury\, will be a memorable experience! The route will last about 10 to 15 kilometers. Be aware that Mazury has jungglacial sculpture so there are some hills \n\n\n\n\nThe Research Station of the Institute of Parasitology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Deer Farm)\nanimals such as red deer\, fallow deer\, and sika deer live here in similar to natural conditions. You will see all of them during 1\,5 h walk across the research station and hear a lot of interesting facts about them from employees. After the walk\, we can sit by the lake and just chill a little bit\, or have a picnic! \n\n\n\n\nSailing at Bełdany lake\nsailing across the beautiful Masurian lakes is all about what Mazury is actually about! Śniardwy is the biggest lake in Poland. You will sail on small boats called Sigma 600 club and it will take about 3 or 4 hours. \n\n\n\n\nSightseeing and boat trip\nsightseeing with a guide around Pisz – a charming city that will last about 1\,5 h. After that\, you will take part in a boat trip across Roś lake. In the end\, we will have the opportunity to sit at the city market and drink some good coffee.  \n\n\n\nExcursion has been cancelled\, due to insuficient sign-ups \n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\nWater Tourism\n\n\n\n\nAre You keen on spending holidays actively? Have You ever been sailing? In our workshop\, we will not only cover the scientific aspect of water tourism across Europe\, but we will go sailing by ourselves and use professional measuring devices to get data about water pollution! \n\n\n\nThe subject of the workshop concerns the general character of water tourism and different approaches to spending leisure time on the water. We will discuss the differences and types of this kind of tourism in various countries. Then we’ll smoothly proceed to the aspect of environmental harassment caused by tourists. By the end of the workshops\, we will aim to create a report discussing the results of our measurement taken on the excursion and assessing the further consequences of the development of water tourism in the Masurian region. \n\n\n\nExcursion\n\n\n\nWe will divide into three groups and get onto the yachts. While sailing across the lake Mikołajskie\, one of the most popular Masurian lakes\, we will measure the cleanliness of the lake using a professional device provided by The Jagiellonian University. Having the continuous measurements taken over some period\, we will be able to put the results onto the map\, which will result in the breathtaking and astonishing spatial interpretation of the quality of the water in the lake. \n\n\n\nWorkshop leaders\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeona Matotek\n\n\n\nUniversity of Zagreb\, EGEA Zagreb \n\n\n\nFacebook\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeon Puljević\n\n\n\nUniversity of Zagreb\, EGEA Zagreb \n\n\n\nFacebook\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistorical places and their meaning in region\nOlecko; Poland – May 20\, 2018: Monument in honor of soldiers who died during World War I\, unveiled on September 11\, 1927\n\n\n\nNo beaches? We don’t have them here either. But we have multiple architectural buildings filled with mixed cultural influence which created an extraordinary climate for the region. We will dive into local history and reasons why masurians are neither pole nor german. \n\n\n\nThe subject of the workshop concerns the heritage of Masuria. We will discuss historical events\, masurian identity and influence of religion in this region. As a part of our workshop we are going to trace back the change of areas of influence of different countries by using pre prepared maps. \n\n\n\nWorkshop leaders\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKorana Komar\n\n\n\nFaculty of Science in Zagreb\, Department of Geography\, EGEA Zagreb \n\n\n\nFacebook\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStella Štefanac\n\n\n\nUniversity of Science Zagreb\, Department of Geography\, EGEA Zagreb \n\n\n\nFacebook\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCittaslow – slow life not only in the countryside\nCatholic baroque church in Swieta Lipka (Heilige Linde)\, Masuria\, Poland\n\n\n\nNo Are you tired of rushed and overcrowded touristic places? In the beginning we are going to present theoretical knowledge about limnology\, then it is time for measurement and taking samples. At the end we will draw conclusions from our work. We also want to touch upon the problem of building a motorway through Masuria and how it can affect the environment of lakes. \n\n\n\nExcursion\n\n\n\nThe science excursion will contain the measurement of the local lake on boats or canoes. After that we are going to visit a nearby educational path which shows the natural environment of Masurian water birds. The last part of the excursion will take place in Mrągowo\, where the motorway through Masuria will be built.
