In response\, resilience is gaining importance as a guiding principle in regional planning. This workshop introduces and critically discusses the concept of resilience in relation to established principles such as sustainability. Through hands-on activities with ArcGIS Pro participants will gain practical skills in disaster mapping and visualization\, culminating in the creation of informative maps or posters highlighting climate risks in both natural and urban landscapes. \n\n\n\n\n\nBorders that Unite: Coordinated Action in Times of Crisis\n\n\n\n                                            \n\n\n\nAmelia Tunikowska \n\n\n\nThe workshop will introduce the fundamentals of international law\, with a particular focus on EU law related to cross-border cooperation and joint emergency-response mechanisms. DESCRIPTION:Organised by EGEA Tartu & EGEA Vilnius \n\n\n\nWe believe that in the periphery\, people find community and strength from each other\, different fields of science find ways to interlink and create breakthroughs\, necessity brings innovation and local cultures thrive. \n\n\n\nWith this congress\, we want to draw attention to an overlooked region and let its complex legacy and stories of foreign powers\, diverse cultural influences and resilient identity in the face of persecution be heard. The periphery here is not some margin\, but a place where overlooked stories can finally be heard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n75 participants \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nIn the center of Baltics\, Latvia is ready to welcome EGEA again after some time away to bring the Baltic geography community back together.We welcome you in so called ‘Switzerland of the Vidzeme Region’ or – Sigulda. During this workshop you will learn basic information about soil properties and types and understand how anthropogenic influence can change them. \n\n\n\n\nReading the Landscape – A Geomorphological Journey in the Mediterranean (with Baltic Perspectives)\n\n\n\n\nLed by Sarp Baran Kaplan (EGEA Izmir) \n\n\n\nThe main goal of this workshop is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how geomorphological processes shape our physical environment and to introduce them to the scientific methods used to decipher the history of Earth. The aim is to bridge the gap between pure Earth Sciences and Geoarchaeology\, showing how ancient landscapes influenced human settlements in the Mediterranean-Aegean region\, while also briefly touching upon the geomorphological dynamics of the Baltic geography.  \n\n\n\n\nSecurity & Borders in the Baltics: Life in the EU’s Eastern Periphery\n\n\n\n\nLed by Olivia Deman (EGEA Leuven) & Michael Maier (EGEA Graz) \n\n\n\nRecent years have brought significant shifts in worldwide geopolitics\, and the Baltic region finds itself at a crucial juncture. To understand the current dynamics in the Baltic region\, it is important to explore all the geopolitical processes shaping the region. By researching different roles\, participants will try to step in the shoes of different actors from the media\, civil society and governance. Negative thoughts are usually much easier to follow than positive ones\, and that is precisely why this training is so necessary. \n\n\n\n\nBrain battle: Chess for beginners\n\n\n\n\nLed by Björn Kirchner & Teresa Conze (EGEA Marburg)  \n\n\n\nChess Workshop for beginners. \n\n\n\nExcursions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSigulda hike along Gauja valley \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour in Sigulda \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of Cēsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of Līgatne with cliffs and unique architecture (easy)\n\n\n\n\nLocated in the heart of Gauja National Park\, Līgatne stands out in Latvia not as a medieval town\, but as a purpose-built industrial settlement. It developed in the 19th century around its paper mill\, which became one of the most important paper producers in the region. Unlike many historic towns that grew organically over centuries\, Līgatne was shaped by industry. Its wooden workers’ houses\, arranged in rows along the valley slopes\, reflect a planned community where housing\, work\, and daily life were closely connected. During the excursion\, we will visit the historic paper mill to learn how paper was produced and how industrialisation influenced both the economy and social structure of the area. The town’s sandstone cave basements\, carved directly into the cliffs\, were used by residents for food storage and remain a visible reminder of practical adaptation to the local environment. In addition to its 19th-century heritage\, Līgatne also has a lesser-known 20th-century layer of history\, including Cold War–era infrastructure hidden beneath the landscape. The excursion will also include a stop by the Amata River and the scenic Zvārtes iezis\, where the river’s rapids flow beneath one of Latvia’s most striking sandstone formations. \n\n\n\n\nScenic Sigulda hike along Gauja Valley (easy to medium)\n\n\n\n\nSigulda is often referred to as one of Latvia’s most scenic towns\, situated in the valley of the Gauja River within Gauja National Park. The Gauja Valley is known for its sandstone outcrops\, forested slopes\, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the river. This excursion offers two hiking options of different difficulty levels\, allowing participants to choose according to their preference. Both routes lead through the Gauja River valley\, passing some of the most impressive viewpoints in the area. Along the way\, we will explore the natural relief of the valley\, descend and ascend its characteristic slopes. The hike concludes at Turaida Castle\, a medieval stone castle complex overlooking the valley. Here\, participants will have the opportunity to explore the castle grounds and learn about its historical role in the region. This excursion is ideal for those interested in combining physical activity with landscape appreciation and historical context. \n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of medieval town Cēsis (easy)\n\n\n\n\nCēsis is one of the oldest towns in Latvia\, with origins dating back to the 13th century. It became an important medieval center during the Livonian Order period and retains a clearly recognizable old town layout. The narrow streets\, market square\, and historic buildings reflect centuries of urban development and make Cēsis one of the most atmospheric historic towns in the country. A central highlight of the excursion is the visit to Cēsis Castle\, widely regarded as one of the best-preserved medieval castle ruins in the Baltic region. Visitors can explore the remaining towers and walls\, gaining insight into medieval defensive architecture and the political importance of the site. The excursion also includes a visit to Ērgļu klintis (Eagle Cliffs)\, one of the longest sandstone cliff faces in Latvia. These cliffs rise along the Gauja River and provide an impressive example of the region’s geological formations. The combination of urban medieval heritage and nearby natural landmarks makes Cēsis a balanced choice for those interested in both history and landscape. \n\n\n\n\nHike along the Vidzeme Seaside (medium)\n\n\n\n\nThe Vidzeme coast in northern Latvia offers a diverse view of the country’s coastline. Unlike the long sandy beaches often associated with Latvia’s western coast\, this region has sandy strips\, rocky beaches\, coastal meadows\, and sandstone outcrops. The landscape along the route changes significantly\, illustrating the diversity of Latvia’s coastal nature. During the excursion\, we will see sandy beaches formed by waves and wind\, rocky shores created by glacial activity\, and open coastal meadows where unique plant and bird species can be found. The diversity of the terrain makes this area particularly suitable for those interested in coastal geography and nature. The highlight of the cultural excursion is a visit to the Ainaži Maritime School Museum in the border town of Ainaži. The former maritime school played an important role in the development of Latvian maritime traditions in the 19th century. The museum provides an insight into Latvia’s maritime heritage and the education of sailors and ship captains. This excursion combines nature exploration with an understanding of the history of Latvia’s coast and sea. \n\n\n\nWhy us?\n\n\n\nOur team is committed and experienced in organising events. We organised the North & Baltic Congress in 2023 and 2024. For the past 12 years\, we have continued the Baltic Weekend tradition\, organising it on a rotating basis between Lithuania and Estonia each year. In 2024\, the event took place in Latvia again. DESCRIPTION:AC 2026 is organized by: EGEA Berlin\, EGEA Bochum\, EGEA Brussels\, EGEA Guildford\, EGEA Hannover\, EGEA Mainz\, EGEA Turku. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur congress will be about exploring the dynamic interplay across the landscapes of\, societies within and legacies created on the Isles of Britain. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey facts\n\n\n\n\nWhere: Sayers Croft Field Centre\, Ewhurst\, United Kingdom\n\n\n\nWhen: 24th–29th August 2026\n\n\n\nCost: estimated 216 € (Group A)\n\n\n\nScientific theme: Landscapes\, Lives and Legacies\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nThe British Isles today are the result of a rich tapestry of events spanning from the dawn of continents to modern day geopolitics. These isles have sunbathed in Mediterranean seas during Pangea’s reign\, to later be moved and carved into the mosaic of morphologies you see today by fluvial and glacial processes. The fertile soils\, temperate conditions and abundant resources made the British Isles an attractive place to settle\, and generations of settlers and invaders have made their marks too. \n\n\n\nFrom tribal druidic Celts\, expansionist Romans\, opportunistic Pagan Anglo-Saxons and then the conquering Christian Normans\, all these cultures and societies mixed together with the unique landscapes to create some of the most famous myths and legends the UK has to offer; from Arthurian legend with Camelot and Merlin\, to Robin Hood and his band of Merry men\, to everyone’s favourite Loch Ness Monster\, Nessie. \n\n\n\nSo become part of the history\, explore these Wild Isles like those who have come before\, and let AC 2026 become part of this rich tapestry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nSayers Croft Outdoor Learning Centre is located at the foot of the Surrey Hills National Landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccommodation\n\n\n\n\nOur accommodation is a beautifully preserved piece of World War 2 evacuee history…\n\n\n\n…with it now being used as a modern day children’s residential camp.\n\n\n\nWith six spacious dormitories with common rooms\, 3 spacious fields with campfires…\n\n\n\n…GA/dance hall combo\, a refreshing swimming pool…\n\n\n\n…and with wonderful outdoor areas to relax and unwind.\n\n\n\nIt is an ideal location for Annual Congress 2026!\n\n\n\nNot to mention the various adventurous activities which can be facilitated right on site such as archery\, axe throwing\, high ropes\, climbing and catapult building!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop ideas\n\n\n\nThe scientific focus of the congress is built around three interconnected thematic pillars: Landscapes\, Lives and Legacies. \n\n\n\nThrough workshops and excursions\, the programme explores how physical landscapes have been shaped by geological and geomorphological processes\, and how human activity continues to transform them through land use\, conservation\, infrastructure and resource management. At the same time\, the congress addresses social and cultural dimensions of geography\, including education\, mobility\, agricultural practices and everyday life. A strong emphasis is placed on historical and long-term perspectives\, such as the evolution of settlements\, language\, and the lasting impacts of political and economic decisions. \n\n\n\nLandscapes\n\n\n\n\nGeomorphology: How the Landscape Formed – North to South Downs Creation\n\n\n\nAnthropomorphic impact: How Human Use Impacts the Landscape (Conservation\, National Parks\, Management)\n\n\n\nGeology – Clay / Sandstone / Ironstone Bedrocks\n\n\n\n\nLives\n\n\n\n\nEducation – The rise of outdoor education in UK education\n\n\n\nInfrastructure Railroaded – UK ‘public’ transport problem\n\n\n\n\nLegacies\n\n\n\n\nEnglish in Contact: A History of Influence and Exchange\n\n\n\nReading the Soil: Biomarker Approaches to Ancient Settlements\n\n\n\nThe Legacy of Austerity: Space\, Inequality\, and Institutional Memory\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExcursion ideas\n\n\n\nEasy hike “Pitch Hill Walk”\n\n\n\n\n\nA gentle climb up Pitch Hill\, then a scenic return through Cranleigh. As such\, we are promoting our Green initiative to help create awareness to the variety of options available and we want to encourage EGEAns to travel in groups to make memorable travel experiences. \n\n\n\nDuring the congress we also will be including a sustainability bingo for our participants to play throughout the week. This involves fun tasks revealed each day and the opportunity to win prizes while making a positive sustainable impact. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to get here?\n\n\n\nFerry: Being surrounded by water has its perks\, and for participants coming by boat that means watching the beautiful White Cliffs of Dover home into view!  \n\n\n\nEurostar/Train: Ever wanted to ride a train under the sea? Well now you can! The Eurostar from Amsterdam/Brussels/Paris will bring you straight to central London! Book 2-3 months in advance for best prices. \n\n\n\nBus: If you can get to Paris or Brussels Flixbus does very cheap (albeit very long) journeys to central London! \n\n\n\nAeroplane: For those in a time crunch\, flying to Gatwick or Heathrow makes a good option with many flights to all major European airports and easy connections to Guildford\, the nearest city.
