SUMMARY:EMRC 2026 - PERIPHERY
DESCRIPTION:Organised by EGEA Tartu & EGEA Vilnius \n\n\n\nWe believe that in the periphery\, people find community and strength from each other\, different fields of science find ways to interlink and create breakthroughs\, necessity brings innovation and local cultures thrive. \n\n\n\nWith this congress\, we want to draw attention to an overlooked region and let its complex legacy and stories of foreign powers\, diverse cultural influences and resilient identity in the face of persecution be heard. The periphery here is not some margin\, but a place where overlooked stories can finally be heard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n75 participants \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nIn the center of Baltics\, Latvia is ready to welcome EGEA again after some time away to bring the Baltic geography community back together. We welcome you in so called ‘Switzerland of the Vidzeme Region’ or – Sigulda. The accommodation is located in Gauja national park and has lovely cottages\, a sports field\, a big common house\, and most importantly a sauna with a pond.75 people are welcome to join us in the countryside to participate in workshops\, excursions and evening programme.Find out more about our accomodation BRŪVERI here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to reach the accommodation?\n\n\n\nWe suggest travelling first to Sigulda. \n\n\n\nWe encourage you to choose green travel options to help minimise our carbon footprint. \n\n\n\nYou can take the train to Sigulda: \n\n\n\n🚅 directly from Riga (45 min to 1h 30 min) \n\n\n\n🚅 from Tartu (3h)\, Tallinn (5h to 5h 30min) or Vilnius (5h 30min). \n\n\n\nSee Latvian train timetables hereSee trains from Estonia here (use your ISIC card for student discount)See trains from Lithuania here (use your ISIC card for student discount) \n\n\n\n🚌From Riga\, there are also direct buses to Sigulda (1h). \n\n\n\nTo reach Riga\, we suggest looking into bus options with Flixbus or LuxExpress from Poland and the Baltics. \n\n\n\n✈️ If you prefer to travel by plane\, we recommend flying to Riga (or Tallinn or Vilnius if you would like to explore more of the Baltics). \n\n\n\nFrom Sigulda\, it is possible to take a regional bus part of the way towards the accommodation. Alternatively\, if you enjoy being active\, the accommodation is 4 km from Sigulda town centre and can also be reached on foot\, partly via a hiking trail. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvening programme\n\n\n\nFun evening entertainment is guaranteed every night. \n\n\n\n\n\nBalkan x Baltic Night \n\n\n\nOn the first day\, we’ll exchange our cultural treasures and get to know Latvia and how the Baltic and Balkan could be similar. To find our more or less Eastern European common ground\, the dress code for this evening is tracksuits like in the 90`s! \n\n\n\n\n\nCultural Fair \n\n\n\nOn the second evening we’ll have the familiar Cultural Fair. \n\n\n\nWear the colours and mood of your homeland! \n\n\n\n\n\nEGEA’s Got Talent and Auction \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, something new awaits –  EGEA’s GOT A TALENT! Every EGEA member\, whether alone or with friends\, can show a talent or share a great idea on stage. Everyone who takes part will get a prize. There’s no dress code\, but you’re welcome to wear your favourite stage outfit. Also\, feel free to bring something for the auction or just participate in bidding and buying for a better cause. \n\n\n\n\n\nPagan Themed Night \n\n\n\nThe final evening is Walpurgis Night and will be spent in a pagan spirit\, dancing around the bonfire\, learning folk dances and spell chants. Bring your most ragged peasant clothes\, or come as a crusader knight or a witch! \n\n\n\n\n\nworkshopS\n\n\n\n\nDigging Deeper: Soils as Archives of Human History\n\n\n\n\nLed by Bartłomiej Zawadzki & Anastazja Wasilewska (EGEA Toruń) \n\n\n\nThis workshop is about the soil cover of Gauja National Park and how the historical exploitation influences the landscape. During this workshop you will learn basic information about soil properties and types and understand how anthropogenic influence can change them. \n\n\n\n\nReading the Landscape – A Geomorphological Journey in the Mediterranean (with Baltic Perspectives)\n\n\n\n\nLed by Sarp Baran Kaplan (EGEA Izmir) \n\n\n\nThe main goal of this workshop is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how geomorphological processes shape our physical environment and to introduce them to the scientific methods used to decipher the history of Earth. The aim is to bridge the gap between pure Earth Sciences and Geoarchaeology\, showing how ancient landscapes influenced human settlements in the Mediterranean-Aegean region\, while also briefly touching upon the geomorphological dynamics of the Baltic geography.  \n\n\n\n\nSecurity & Borders in the Baltics: Life in the EU’s Eastern Periphery\n\n\n\n\nLed by Olivia Deman (EGEA Leuven) & Michael Maier (EGEA Graz) \n\n\n\nRecent years have brought significant shifts in worldwide geopolitics\, and the Baltic region finds itself at a crucial juncture. To understand the current dynamics in the Baltic region\, it is important to explore all the geopolitical processes shaping the region. By researching different roles\, participants will try to step in the shoes of different actors from the media\, civil society and governance. Afterwards\, participants will exchange their perspectives by filming a fictional news segment\, integrating all perspectives into a coherent video. \n\n\n\n\nBaltic Identity and periphery: How geography shapes who we are?\n\n\n\n\nLed by Pierre Berthou (EGEA Lyon) & Ewen Nowaczyk (EGEA Clermont-Ferrand) \n\n\n\nThis workshop aims to introduce participants to the geographical concepts of identity and periphery through the case study of the Baltic States. \n\n\n\n\nPeripheral areas in your country – identification and solutions\n\n\n\n\nLed by Julianna Bieńkowska & Wojciech Olsza (EGEA Kraków) \n\n\n\nThe main idea of the workshop is for its participants to identify peripheral or depopulated areas in their home countries and propose solutions that could improve the situation of these problematic regions. Most countries belonging to the East & Mediterranean Region have such regions\, and we believe that each workshop participant will be able to name such an area in their country. \n\n\n\nTrainings\n\n\n\n\nMind–Body Integration: Psychological Resilience Through Movement \n\n\n\n\nLed by Anna Mykych (EGEA Kraków) \n\n\n\nThis workshop focuses on developing psychological resilience\, self-awareness\, and leadership presence through the integration of soft skills psychology and simple physical practices. Participants will explore how stress\, attention\, emotions\, and inner stability are connected to the body. \n\n\n\n\nReflecting\, Journaling\, and Meditation – Finding Your Inner Peace\n\n\n\n\nLed by Marielle Barwich & Max Wassum (EGEA Marburg) \n\n\n\nThis training focuses on mental health\, journaling\, and reconnecting with your inner voice. In our busy daily lives\, it is often challenging to stay connected to ourselves and even harder to treat ourselves with kindness. Negative thoughts are usually much easier to follow than positive ones\, and that is precisely why this training is so necessary. \n\n\n\n\nBrain battle: Chess for beginners\n\n\n\n\nLed by Björn Kirchner & Teresa Conze (EGEA Marburg)  \n\n\n\nChess Workshop for beginners. \n\n\n\nExcursions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSigulda hike along Gauja valley \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour in Sigulda \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of Cēsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of Līgatne with cliffs and unique architecture (easy)\n\n\n\n\nLocated in the heart of Gauja National Park\, Līgatne stands out in Latvia not as a medieval town\, but as a purpose-built industrial settlement. It developed in the 19th century around its paper mill\, which became one of the most important paper producers in the region. Unlike many historic towns that grew organically over centuries\, Līgatne was shaped by industry. Its wooden workers’ houses\, arranged in rows along the valley slopes\, reflect a planned community where housing\, work\, and daily life were closely connected. During the excursion\, we will visit the historic paper mill to learn how paper was produced and how industrialisation influenced both the economy and social structure of the area. The town’s sandstone cave basements\, carved directly into the cliffs\, were used by residents for food storage and remain a visible reminder of practical adaptation to the local environment. In addition to its 19th-century heritage\, Līgatne also has a lesser-known 20th-century layer of history\, including Cold War–era infrastructure hidden beneath the landscape. The excursion will also include a stop by the Amata River and the scenic Zvārtes iezis\, where the river’s rapids flow beneath one of Latvia’s most striking sandstone formations. \n\n\n\n\nScenic Sigulda hike along Gauja Valley (easy to medium)\n\n\n\n\nSigulda is often referred to as one of Latvia’s most scenic towns\, situated in the valley of the Gauja River within Gauja National Park. The Gauja Valley is known for its sandstone outcrops\, forested slopes\, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the river. This excursion offers two hiking options of different difficulty levels\, allowing participants to choose according to their preference. Both routes lead through the Gauja River valley\, passing some of the most impressive viewpoints in the area. Along the way\, we will explore the natural relief of the valley\, descend and ascend its characteristic slopes. The hike concludes at Turaida Castle\, a medieval stone castle complex overlooking the valley. Here\, participants will have the opportunity to explore the castle grounds and learn about its historical role in the region. This excursion is ideal for those interested in combining physical activity with landscape appreciation and historical context. \n\n\n\n\nWalking tour of medieval town Cēsis (easy)\n\n\n\n\nCēsis is one of the oldest towns in Latvia\, with origins dating back to the 13th century. It became an important medieval center during the Livonian Order period and retains a clearly recognizable old town layout. The narrow streets\, market square\, and historic buildings reflect centuries of urban development and make Cēsis one of the most atmospheric historic towns in the country. A central highlight of the excursion is the visit to Cēsis Castle\, widely regarded as one of the best-preserved medieval castle ruins in the Baltic region. Visitors can explore the remaining towers and walls\, gaining insight into medieval defensive architecture and the political importance of the site. The excursion also includes a visit to Ērgļu klintis (Eagle Cliffs)\, one of the longest sandstone cliff faces in Latvia. These cliffs rise along the Gauja River and provide an impressive example of the region’s geological formations. The combination of urban medieval heritage and nearby natural landmarks makes Cēsis a balanced choice for those interested in both history and landscape. \n\n\n\n\nHike along the Vidzeme Seaside (medium)\n\n\n\n\nThe Vidzeme coast in northern Latvia offers a diverse view of the country’s coastline. Unlike the long sandy beaches often associated with Latvia’s western coast\, this region has sandy strips\, rocky beaches\, coastal meadows\, and sandstone outcrops. The landscape along the route changes significantly\, illustrating the diversity of Latvia’s coastal nature. During the excursion\, we will see sandy beaches formed by waves and wind\, rocky shores created by glacial activity\, and open coastal meadows where unique plant and bird species can be found. The diversity of the terrain makes this area particularly suitable for those interested in coastal geography and nature. The highlight of the cultural excursion is a visit to the Ainaži Maritime School Museum in the border town of Ainaži. The former maritime school played an important role in the development of Latvian maritime traditions in the 19th century. The museum provides an insight into Latvia’s maritime heritage and the education of sailors and ship captains. This excursion combines nature exploration with an understanding of the history of Latvia’s coast and sea. \n\n\n\nWhy us?\n\n\n\nOur team is committed and experienced in organising events. We organised the North & Baltic Congress in 2023 and 2024. For the past 12 years\, we have continued the Baltic Weekend tradition\, organising it on a rotating basis between Lithuania and Estonia each year. In 2024\, the event took place in Latvia again. We therefore have the experience needed to organise a fun East & Mediterranean Congress in Latvia. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions/ideas\, please do not hesitate to contact us at: emrc2026@egea.eu \n\n\n\nMeet the orgateam\n\n\nOrga team of EMRC 2026Main orgaScience teamMedia teamProgramme teamHelping handsParticipant team + photographerGreen team + helping hands\n\n\nMain orga: Jonas\, Laura Heleene\, Regina \n\n\n\nExcursion coordinator: Edvards \n\n\n\nFinance and fundraising: Regina\, Artūrs \n\n\n\nGreen coordinator: Annabel \n\n\n\nScience coordinator: Adomas\, Martyna \n\n\n\nMedia\, design & merch: Liis-Ellen\, Mia Marie \n\n\n\nParticipant coordinator: Agnes\, Livija \n\n\n\nDay and night programme: Lauri\, Lilija \n\n\n\nHelping hands: Heli\, Triinu\, Hendrik\, Mattias\, Mikas\, Gintarė and Helena \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram

Here we will show you our plans for the congress and provide you with all the information you need. We will update it regularly\, please give us some time to work on the specific sections. \n\n\n\nGreetings from EGEA Zürich\, Jena and Halle 🙂 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTopic\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nTravel Guide\n\n\n\nSponsors\n\n\n\nRegistration & Open Calls\n\n\n\n\n\nWinter hike after our first visit of the accommodation (01.02.2025)Our first live meeting in Jena (08.-10.11.2024)Our second live meeting in Bühl\, southern Germany (24.-27.04.2025)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTopic: Geographies of celebration\n\n\n\nThe World Economic Forum takes place every yeear in Davos. (Image – weforum.org)The Paléo Festival Nyon is one of the biggest festivals in Switzerland with over 300’000 visitors annually (Image – paleo.ch)Weltklasse Zürich is an annual\, invitation-only\, world-class track and field meeting in Zurich. One of the first large-scale international athletics events\, it is sometimes referred to as the one-day Olympics (Image – weltklassezuerich.ch).The Street Parade is a techno music festival in Zurich\, Switzerland. With around one million attendees\, it is the world’s most attended technoparade (Image – streetparade.com)The Locarno International Film Festival takes place every year\, usually in August. The festival began in 1946 and over the years\, it turned to be the name and home of artistic films\, full length films\, documentaries and more (Image – locarnofestival.ch)\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLarge events – be it in sports\, culture\, or entertainment – are transformative moments for cities and communities. They bring people together\, celebrate shared experiences\, and place their host regions in global spotlight. Yet\, these grand celebrations often come with significant challenges. The immense investment in infrastructure\, resources\, and finances frequently contrasts with the long-term impact\, raising critical questions about sustainability and equity. From abandoned stadiums and altered cityscapes to environmental degradation and displaced communities\, the aftermath of large events can linger long after the applause fades. Do the promises of economic growth and urban development truly outweigh the costs? Our exploration dives deep into these pressing issues\, examining how major events reshape infrastructure\, influence local economies\, and impact the environment. Through an interdisciplinary lens – spanning human and physical geography\, remote sensing\, and GIS – we will uncover the ripple effects of large-scale gatherings on host cities and landscapes.By bringing together experts\, students\, and stakeholders from diverse fields\, we aim to develop innovative strategies for event planning and management – ones that ensure lasting benefits for host communities while minimizing negative impacts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipant fee\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFee to be paid (in %)AC 2025 fee (in EUR)Group A100210Group B80168Group C65136.5Group D50105Insights on how the Annual Congress’ fee has been calculated\, can be found in the official EGEA documents (APPENDIX C).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGroup A\n\n Austria \n\n\n\n\n Belgium \n\n\n\n Finland \n\n\n\n France \n\n\n\n Germany \n\n\n\n Italy \n\n\n\n Lithuania \n\n\n\n Malta \n\n\n\n Netherlands \n\n\n\n Norway \n\n\n\n Slovenia \n\n\n\n Spain \n\n\n\n Switzerland \n\n\n\n United Kingdom \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGroup B\n Croatia Czech Republic Estonia Hungary Poland Romania Russia Slovak Republic Türkiye \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGroup C\n Serbia \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGroup D\n Bosnia and Herzegovina Kosovo Ukraine \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\nMore than Games: Urban change and the planning of Paris 2024Are you ready to explore the fascinating world of mega-events and urban transformation? This workshop will take you behind the scenes of one of the biggest sport events on the planet. Focusing on the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 as a case study\, it explores the impact of large-scale events on the structure and functioning of cities. You’ll discover how hosting the Olympics affects cities\, their environments\, economies and communities. Key themes include the transformation of the urban landscape\, processes of social inclusion and exclusion\, and the challenges of organizing sustainable and inclusive Games. The workshop takes an interdisciplinary approach\, aiming to offer a critical perspective on how global events shape contemporary urban life. Whether you’re passionate about sports\, urban planning or just curious how cities evolve\, this workshop will inspire and engage you.Workshop leader: Remigiusz Kałczuga & Mateusz Rosiak \n\n\n\nHelping your community: Volunteerism in- and outside of EGEAThe mere fact that you are reading this right now probably means that doing the bare minimum is not enough for you. And guess what: You are not the only one! You are the culmination of a long history of volunteerism. But let us be honest for a moment: EGEA is not the only way people get involved in their local communities. Some people help neighbors with repairs\, some help animals in shelters\, some provide after-school tutoring with children\, others join a local community organization. What is the right thing for you? And which forms of volunteering does your community offer? After little dive into the theories of volunteerism\, we will work together on visualising a way you can get further involved. You are a courageous person. Do not let comfort or the state of the world overwhelm you. Do something about it.Workshop leader: Matthew Becker & Nataliia Filimonchuk \n\n\n\nGoal! But at what cost? Mega-events social impact\, place-making and the afterlife of infrastructureHave you ever wondered what is going on with mega-events logos and how it’s connected to local identity? Everyone remeber Shakiras Waka Waka during 2010 World cup but is anyone know the others mega events anthems? This workshop explores how mega-events like Olympic Games or World Cup affects the image\, infrastructure and foremost identity of host cities. We would like to make an introduction to the place-branding topic. Through games\, lectures and group work\, participants will dive into real-world case studies – with a special focus on EURO 2008 and EURO 2025 in Switzerland – and then make an evaluation of them. Together\, we will follow branding slogans\, logotypes\, abandoned or well-developed stadiums.Workshop leader: Kinga Mateja & Mateusz Szkopiarek \n\n\n\nEnergy for the event – Energy Supply for Mega-Events through GIS\, Ecology\, and NegotiationHave you ever wondered how our energy systems can be decarbonized? In this workshop\, Moritz and Johannes will guide you through the planning of a net-zero energy supply for a mega-event. You’ll carry out a biotope type mapping and use it—alongside legal and technical criteria—as a basis for siting wind\, solar\, or storage systems. Together\, we’ll explore not only the physical and spatial conditions but also the social and technological conflicts that arise in renewable energy planning—offering a realistic and interdisciplinary insight into a key professional field for geographers. GIS experience is helpful but not required.Workshop leader: Johannes Czernik & Moritz Helmecke \n\n\n\nFestival Futures: Imagining Circular Mega-EventsMega-events are beautiful moments of celebration\, but they often come with a heavy ecological footprint. From short-lived infrastructure to massive overconsumption\, events are in need of rethinking. In this workshop\, we invite you to imagine what a truly circular mega-event could look like. These concepts can range from practical solutions to utopian visions\, as the aim is to challenge assumptions and inspire new ideas. Whether you are new to festivals or an experienced festivalgoer looking to deepen your knowledge\, you’re welcome to explore this topic with us!Workshop leader: Heini Huovinen & Melissa Klimenko \n\n\n\nSpying out megastructuresSpying Out Megastructures is a workshop all about giant structures built for massive events – think stadiums\, concert arenas\, or Olympic parks. We’ll take a deep dive into these megastructures using satellite data and remote sensing tools to see how they impact the natural environment around them. Our main tool will be Google Earth Engine (GEE) – a powerful platform for satellite image analysis that is built on JavaScript. Don’t worry if you’re new to all this – the workshop is designed for people with zero experience in remote sensing or GEE. We’ll guide you step-by-step\, making sure everything is easy to follow and fun to learn.Workshop leader: Pola Mickiewicz & Zofia Sułkowska \n\n\n\nLet’s Make a Celebration – and Map What It MeansWhat better way to explore Geographies of Celebration than… by throwing our own celebration? In this workshop\, we’ll do exactly that – by building a playful geoquiz web app as our main “goal.” You’ll learn how to use simple GIS and web mapping tools to create an interactive quiz that can inform\, surprise\, or make people laugh\, while also making them think about the social\, environmental\, and logistical sides of mega-events.The geoquiz is our baseline project – it’s easy\, fun\, and a great way to share geography with anyone. But if you have a burning idea for another type of event-related GIS web app – maybe a CO₂ calculator for concert travel\, a crowdsourced map of local bars\, or an interactive food-sourcing planner – we’ll help you bring that to life instead. No GIS experience? No problem. We’ll start from scratch\, sprinkle in datasets about travel modes\, food miles\, and event locations\, and by the end you’ll have a working app to share. It’s part mapping\, part creativity – and 100% a celebration of your own making for the final presentation.Workshop leader: Stefan Graf (Esri)\, Johann Neugebauer (Esri) & Marcel Felix (EGEA) \n\n\n\nThe (economic) cycle of waterHave you ever wondered how river flow impacts our everyday lives and the local economy? If your answer is YES\, then we invite you to join us on a journey through the fascinating high-mountain rivers of Switzerland. Together\, we’ll dive into the topic of water management and explore the key properties of water that play a crucial role in this field. To make the most of the Congress setting\, we will conduct fieldwork on the Grosse Melchaa River\, collecting data for hands-on analysis. This data will be used during GIS sessions and in discussions about the opportunities and challenges that water presents to local communities. All the activities we’ll engage in are simple\, fun\, and fully guided—we’ll support you every step of the way.Workshop leader: Igor Dmowski & Jan Jurkiewicz \n\n\n\nExplosive Entertainment: how fireworks affect humans\, animals and the planet?Big celebrations involving fireworks might be exciting for us\, but they can be a real shock for animals and the environment. In this workshop\, we’ll explore the impact on animals\, our planet and society of these events and why it matters. Through real-life examples\, group discussions\, scientific input and your creative expression\, we’ll dig into what could be done differently to reduce the damage while still enjoying the moment. To do this\, we will work towards holding a debate that also highlights the reasons why fireworks are still widely used today by finding stakeholders interested in continuing the tradition and understanding their viewpoint in addition to the many convincing counterarguments.Workshop leader: Klaudia Kurpios & Jacek Gładysiak \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrainings\n\n\n\n\nThriving under pressureStress isn’t your enemy. This training will help you turn stress into strength by understanding your personal stress response and learning how to use it to your advantage. We’ll focus on both managing your own stress and communicating effectively under pressure. You’ll walk away with simple\, practical tools you can confidently use in real-life situations.Training Leader: Marie Brožová \n\n\n\nIntercultural CommunicationThis training session is dedicated to creating an open mind towards cultural differences\, stereotypes\, more tolerance\, the awareness of human rights and the prevention of discrimination.Within the training the members will learn about simple models of culture\, experience a little role play and discussions about the topic.Training Leader: Barbara Kurtov \n\n\n\nMove Through Stress: Understanding and Releasing TensionIn these two sessions\, we will explore how stress affects the body and how we can respond to it in healthy ways. The first part will focus on understanding the body’s reactions to stress and how to prevent long-term tension. In the second session\, you will learn simple\, practical exercises to release stress and feel more balanced. No special skills are needed — just an open mind\, curiosity and a willingness to move.Training Leader: Zuzanna Pyskaty\, Anna Mykych \n\n\n\nPitch Perfect: The Art of Public Speaking A public speaking training helps individuals develop the skills to communicate and present their ideas clearly\, confidently and persuasively in front of an audience. For geographers\, this is especially useful when presenting research results\, engaging with communities or influencing planning decisions. The training will include activities like crafting concise messages\, improving vocal delivery\, managing stage fright and practicing with real-world presentation scenarios relevant to geography. Participants will engage in group exercises\, solo speaking exercises and short talks to build confidence and refine their public speaking style.Training Leader: Dunja Galinec \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSkill Sessions\n\n\n\n\nA Step-by-Step-Guide: Building emotional resilience through artIn this beginner-friendly session\, you’ll explore how painting and sketching can be used as tools to manage difficult emotions and build emotional resilience. No artistic background is needed\, just a willingness to try something new! We’ll start as a group\, introducing healthy coping strategies and creative techniques\, then you’ll have quiet alone time to practice turning thoughts and feelings into shapes and colors at your own pace. You’ll leave with your own sketch and some practical ways to support your well-being! Leader: Emma Cato Radosevic\, EGEA Vienna \n\n\n\nA refresher on English grammar\, phrases\, and vocabularyThis session will cover a quick revision of useful grammar (mainly tenses)\, basic phrases\, and practical vocabulary. There will also be time to answer any questions participants might have. If time allows\, we’ll also touch on formal English and email writing skills. Join in if you want to improve your English!Leader: Anne Denzlein\, EGEA Würzburg \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExcursions\n\n\n\nNotice: Clicking on the excursion will take you directly to the excursion reports! \n\n\n\n\nStadium and city of Lucerne This field trip will take you to the city of Lucerne where you will have the chance to visit the state of the art football stadium which is built in the Minergie-standard. Minergie is a label for ecological construction of buildings in Switzerland. Learn more how an energy-efficient stadium is built and managed on a tour in the morning. In the afternoon we will head to the center of Lucerne and learn more about the history of this jewel in the pre-alps.\n\n\n\nLake Rotsee (Hydrology) This fieldtrip will also take you to Lucerne. After a short walk (30min) which will take you by the lake Lucerne shore and the lion-monument you will arrive at Rotsee\, which is a smaller lake bordering the city of Lucerne. This lake is famous for hosting international rowing competition events. In an excursion organised together with the department of surface waters of the state of Lucerne you will learn more about it’s historical development and how the intensive use by orts and nature preservation work together. Thereby we will also look into how its fauna and flora will develop in the future. Even though the Rotsee is a relative small lake\, we can draw parallels to other lakes in Switzerland and discuss the bigger picture. So water you waiting for? Dive in!On the way back from Rotsee to the center of Lucerne we will also pass through a part of the old city of Lucerne before mountain the Bus back to Melchtal.\n\n\n\nTourism & Sport in Engelberg This excursion will take you to the alpine village of Engelberg. Here you will learn in the morning more about how talents are prepared for an athletic career in winter sports at the swiss sport high school. Thereby you will gain insights into physical and psychological challenges and training methods which prepare them for the slopes. After lunch we will visit the natural ski-jumping slope in Engelberg where a guide gives us insights into this extraordinary sport. After gaining new heights we will play a game through Engelberg to see the town before taking the bus back to the Sportcamp. The physical activity here is climbing the stairs of the ski-jump infrastructure and walking through Engelberg.\n\n\n\nHard hike: Glacial landforms of Switzerland The hard-hike will take you from Melchsee-Frutt via 4 lakes and one mountain pass to Engelberg where you will mount the bus back to the sport camp. During this hike you will pass a large number of different glacial landforms and will cross a glacial valley. From the second to the fourth lake you will also be able to spot the remains of the glaciers in the distance. The lakes on the way also give you a nice chance to cool down. The hike (only walking time) will take about five hours and about an elevation change of 700m up and down again. It is important to have good hiking gear and be in good condition for this hike!\n\n\n\nBiodiversity in the Melchtal valley Together with an expert you will explore the rich biodiversity found in the area on a hike. The Mechtal is for instance an area where a vulture re-wilding project of Switzerland is happening. Maybe you are even able to spot one of the majestic birds yourself? Thereby you will cross different climate and vegetation zones where different species of plants grow which in turn supports a changing fauna. The Melchsee-Frutt is also home to a large alpine bog which is rich in biodiversity. Interestingly all bogs and swamps in Switzerland are protected by federal law. This however is in conflict with the usage of the alps for tourism and farming. So which better place to learn about how humans influence biodiversity?\n\n\n\nEasy Hike: Hydropower on Melchsee-Frutt This excursion will take you around the two lakes on Melchsee-Frutt\, the Melchsee and the Tannalpsee. Both of these lakes are to some extent artificial\, meaning there were smaller lakes before but they were extended to produce hydropower. Thereby hydropower usage on the Melchsee-Frutt is very old. Already 100 years ago the first hydropower station was built in a natural karstic cave. The production of electricity helped then to boost tourism on Melchsee-Frutt and create jobs in an area which used to be dependent on farming. What better way to connect to the harnessed power of nature than with a dip in one of the two lakes? The hike will take about 3h (only walking time) and cross an elevation of 250m up and down\, but don’t worry\, there are no steep inclines.\n\n\n\nAlpine Soils under Pressure This excursion will look into how the soils change with altitudes and how different land-uses influence the soils. Thereby we will have the chance to discuss how winter sports influence the soil as the pressure exerted on the soil and different amounts of water supplied where the ski slopes influence the physical properties of the soil and the vegetation which grows on the soil.We will also cross a karstic area during our excursion where we can look into the special properties of soil developing in this geologically interesting area. So if you need a chance to connect back to the ground during the AC\, this is your chance! We will walk for about 3h (only walking) and cross an elevation of about 1000m down and 100m. There is no steep incline though and the paths are in good condition (half of it is gravel road).\n\n\n\nRemote Sensing of Alpine Forest Local experts from the University of Zurich will give you insights on methods of forest remote sensing in an alpine setting. After an introduction to the fundamentals of passive-optical remote sensing\, the newly learned will be put to practice in the field. With string and a drone we will apply remote sensing methods right there in the Melchtal. Afterwards the data will be analysed and challenges as well as possibilities of remote sensing in the alpine forests will be evaluated. This excursion will largely happen near the sportcamp in the morning but in the afternoon an easy hike around the local forests is included to not miss out on the beautiful landscape! Thereby you will learn more about the local forestry and forest ecosystem services in the region but also in Switzerland in general. Thereby the challenge posed to the forest by climate change will be discussed and how remote sensing can help monitor the forests health and help forestry services deal with the challenges of the future. So don’t miss this chance on a true remote-sensing excursion!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nregion Melchtal\n\n\n\nOur congress will take place in the Melchtal which is situated in the geographic centre of Switzerland ca. 80 km south of Zurich. The valley shaped by the river Melchaa is surrounded by beautiful mountain formations and nearby lakes. The Melchtal is famous for being the supposed origin of Arnold von Melchtal\, one of the three legendary founders of Switzerland\, according to the country’s founding myth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccommodation\n\n\n\nWith the Sportcamp Melchtal we found an ideal venue for our congress with a breathtaking mountain view. Located 890 m above sea level\, it offers everything we need: A spacious hall for GA sessions and evening events\, multiple workshop rooms\, and many outdoor possibilities. Whether you’re exploring nature trails\, unwinding in the fresh alpine air\, or getting active on the sport courts with volleyball or bouldering\, Sportcamp Melchtal combines relaxation with adventure\, making it an inspiring setting for every part of our programme. \n\n\n\n\nSportcamp Melchtal (Image – sportcamp.ch)Sportcamp Melchtal (Image – sportcamp.ch)Sportcamp Melchtal (Image – sportcamp.ch)Sportcamp Melchtal (Image – sportcamp.ch)Sportcamp Melchtal (Image – sportcamp.ch)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAround Melchtal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdress of the accomodation : Fruttstrasse 36\, 6067 Melchtal\, Switzerland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTravel guide\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe congress starts with the registration at 11 am on Monday\, 08th of September 2025\, followed by the opening ceremony at 2 pm. Make sure to arrive on time! After one week of great experiences it is time to say goodbye after breakfast on Saturday 13th of September 2025. We recommend using the same way back. \n\n\n\nNote that Switzerland has its own currency\, the Swiss franc CHF (1 EUR ~ 0.95 CHF)\, but you can usually pay by card. At the congress you can pay in Euro. \n\n\n\nPublic transportation in Switzerland is a convenient and reliable way of getting around\, which is why we recommend that you use it for your travels. Below you will find our suggestions for the various means of transport to and from the congress venue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n By train (and bus) 🚅 By bus 🚌 By car 🚗 By plane ✈\n\n\n\nIf you are travelling by train to the AC2025 your destination is the village of Sarnen. There are several ways to reach Sarnen by train\, for example RE7 or IR15 from Bern or IR70 and IR75 from Zürich. If you take the train from Zürich or Bern you need to change in Luzern to PE or S5. You can search for connections in the SBB Mobile App or on the website of the Swiss Federal Railway company SBB. As Switzerland is part of the European Youth Pacts\, people up to the age of 26 receive discounts – for example\, a group ticket for four people for 80 CHF in total for a whole day. You can find the best international train connections on comparison portals such as Trainline. The fastest train connections can be found on the EuroCity website. There are also student discounts there. We recommend using the SBB Mobile App to stay updated on track changes etc. From Sarnen you have to take the Postal Busservice B 343 to Stöckalp and leave at the stop Melchtal\, Sportcamp to get to the accommodation. We will later provide a sheet with the departure times\, where you can sign up for and distribute to the various bus reservation we made for you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe nearest Flixbus stop to Melchtal is Luzern\, but Zug and Zürich are also possible. From there you have connections to Milan\, France and Germany. You can also find cheap buses outside of Flixbus\, for example on apps like Trainline. Sometimes you can get some student discounts on different national and international student discount websites (E.g. Studentenrabatt in Germany). \n\n\n\nCheck the section by train (and bus) for further information on how to get to the accommodation after reaching the major cities in Switzerland. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou can also drive to Sportcamp Melchtal by car\, there are plenty of parking spaces. We recommend driving in groups and will later publish a carpooling sheet where you can find other EGEAns carpoolers. Important: To use Swiss highways\, you need a Vignette. They are only available for one year (01.01.2025 – 31.01.2026) and cost 40 CHF (44 EUR). You can buy them online or at service stations near the border. The accommodation is located in the Swiss Alps\, so it is the easiest way to get to Switzerland from the north\, e.g. via international roads from southern German cities such as Freiburg\, Stuttgart and Munich\, but also from France and Austria. If you have made it to Switzerland\, the direct way to AC2025 is via highway 2\, which connects Basel and Luzern. Coming from Zurich\, you can take highway 14 and highway 4 to enter onto highway 2. Please keep in mind the speed limit of 120 km/h. Speeding Tickets are very expensive. I mean it’s Switzerland\, what did you expect? If you drive pass Luzern\, take highway 8 Junction Lopper to Interlaken until you reach Sarnen. From Sarnen you can take the cantonal road to Melchtal. The speed limit for main roads/highways is 100 km/h\, for cantonal roads 80 km/h.There is a barrier from the ski area in front of the entrance to the sportcamp\, this should be open\, otherwise you can take a ticket and validate it (for free) at the accommodation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you want to fly to AC2025\, the nearest airports with suitable connections are Zurich (ZRH) or Basel-Mulhouse (the only airport with three codes: BSL in Switzerland\, MLH in France\, EAP in Germany). After arriving at the airport you can use the public transportation to Sarnen and to the accommodation. The cheapest airlines reaching Swiss airports are WizzAir and RyanAir. Use websites like Skyscanner and Google Flights to find the cheapest flights. \n\n\n\n🌳To protect the environment\, please check the other travel options before you book a flight\, or consider traveling only one way by plane and the other by alternative modes of transport. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration & Open Calls\n\n\n\nWe offer 200 spots for participants\, incl. fixed places for official positions. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDo you need financial support to attend the congress?Consider applying for the support fund below. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n➡️ Log in with your EGEA account to access the information below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsors\n\n\n\nWe would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support\, without which we would not be able to realize this event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEsri is the world’s leading provider of Geographic Information System (GIS) software and geospatial technologies. SUMMARY:Western Regional Congress 2025: Catan's Compass
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\n\n\n\nHello and welcome to the official web page of the Western Regional Congress 2025 hosted by EGEA Leuven and EGEA Brussels! \n\n\n\n\nThe strategic location of Flanders in Europe has resulted in the fact that it held the highest population in northwestern Europe for centuries. In Flanders a city is always in close proximity. This makes that people can live in the countryside and work in the city. This makes that the border between countryside and city becomes very fuzzy. Competition for land is very strong in Flanders\, and in the last 50 years the spatial planning was unsatisfactory. This caused that ribbon development was able to appear. Primarly in the Campine area this phenomenon is very common. Therefore\, it is very difficult to make efficient public transport and to connect natural areas. The negative consequences go however much futher than this. Flanders face many sustainable land use challenges. Protecting further hardening of the land will be key to maintain groundwater levels and prevent flooding\, but legislation is often blocked in the Belgian Parliament. \n\n\n\nJust like the boardgame Catan\, land use is important in the real life as well\, and the land uses of the past can have a great impact on the land use of the future. Together with our partners we\, the WRC 2025 Orga Team\, are happy to show European geographers what challenges keep Belgian geographers up at night. \n\n\n\n\nWhen is the wrc?\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganised by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Mail them to WRC2025@egea.eu or send us a chat on our instagram page \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram\n\nLinkedIn\n\nMail\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here! The Registration deadline is 17/12/2024 at 23:59\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExcursions\n\n\n\n\n\n 🚢Excursion 1: Port of Antwerp and Antwerp city-centre\n\n\n\n\n\n 🧭Excursion 2: Abandoned Town of Doel & Geo-park Scheldedelta\n\n\n\n\n\n 🚲 Excursion 3: Hard Bike Excursion across the Campine Ridge\n\n\n\n\n\n 🏙️Excursion 4: Brussels Urban Development History and the Ferraris maps\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\nApply to become a workshop leader by filling in this forms: WORKSHOP OPEN CALL FORM. The floods in 2021 in Wallonia were a good example of Belgium’s poor river management. Dike-building at the seaside could also be interesting\n\n\n\nA workshop about the urban planning or public transport challenges in Belgium because of it’s typical ribbon urban sprawl patterns\n\n\n\nA workshop about how historic maps can be used as a scientific data source\, especially the Belgian Ferrarismaps which are highly detailed land cover maps from the 18th century.\n\n\n\nA workshop about the local economic development\, especially local beers and fruits \n\n\n\nA workshop about regional rural development\, especially because of the LEADER+ program active in most Belgian rural areas. \n\n\n\n\nTraining/Skill session\n\n\n\n\nApply to become a Trainer/Skill session leader! This is a short training session for participants to follow to enhance certain life or organisational or other skills. If you would like to become a Trainer/ Skill session leader at the WRC you can register here via this forms: TRAINING/ SKILL SESSION LEADER REGISTRATION FORMS. PROLONGED DEADLINE AS LONG AS THERE ARE WORKSHOP LEADERS NEEDED. Be fast if you want a fixed spot at the WRC! \n\n\n\n\nLeisure excursion\n\n\n\n\nHike – Herentals: The Capital of the Campine region\nHerentalsExplore this lovely city which had a significant impact on the regional development of the Campine region. We will explore the historic city centre\, the Begijnhof\,the ‘lakenhal’ and a number of medieval churches. \n\n\n\n\nHike – Visit the regional landscape park Kleine & Grote Nete\nThe Regional Landscape ‘Kleine & Grote Nete” is the regional ecological management organisation in the Campine region. Their projects revolve around nurturing the region\, safeguarding and improving biodiversity and nature. They also have projects focusing on recreation\, leisure and heritage. This leisure excursion will walk through the regional landscape\, which our accomodation is part of\, and will show you a few of their amazing projects. \n\n\n\n\nEasy Bike – Goat farm and the gnome-forest\nOn this leisure excursion\, you’ll visit a nearby goat farm (yes normally you’ll be able to pet the goats). Afterwards\, you’ll go for a short hike in the gnome-forest! 🙂 \n\n\n\n\nMystery leisure excursion\nPlay\n\n\n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\nAccomodation\n\n\n\nPreviously a munition depot of the Belgian army\, De Hoge Rielen has become one of the most famous youth centers in Belgium. Located in the heart of the Campine (Kempen) area\, in the middle of a forested area\, we’ll be bringing all-European vibrations to this quiet area. We have booked two buildings\, adding up to 105 spots for participants in addition to the Orga Team. The rooms are mostly for 4 persons. The bathrooms are located on the corridor. We look forward to giving you the awesome congress experience in this wonderful accomodation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\nHow to get there\n\n\n\nTrainCar/CarpoolingBusCycling/HitchhikingPlane \n\nWhich station do I go to?\n\n\n\nThe quickest ways to get to Belgium are 1) Night trains: European NightJet goes from Prague and Berlin\, or from Venice and Innsbruck. ÖBB has a night train from Vienna and München to Brussels 2) During the day\, there are high speed trains arriving from all over Europe to Antwerp or Brussels. From both Antwerp and Brussels\, there are direct trains to Tielen. \n\n\n\nThe station of Tielen is located around 20 minutes walking from the accommodation. In Tielen there are not a lot of opportunities to buy food for lunch on monday noon so if you have the time\, you should do that in one of the bigger cities. \n\n\n\nWhat is the best train fare for me?\n\n\n\nIn Belgium train tickets do not change their price based on how much on beforehand you buy them. Always try to buy your train ticket before you get on the train. If you buy them in the train you have to pay an extra 7 euros. You can buy tickets via the NMBS/SNCB app quite easily. Otherwise you can always buy them in the blue vending machines in every train station. Below you have our recommendations. Do some math to find out which type of ticket is more advantageous for you. If you’re not sure\, you can always contact us through our instagram\, LinkedIn or via e-mail (wrc2025@egea.eu) and we’ll gladly help you! \n\n\n\nSolo traveller \n\n\n\n\nIf you are younger than 26 you should buy a Youth Ticket -26. This reduces the fare to €7\,50 euros per journey. This applies between every pair of Belgian (and Luxemburg) train stations. This also only applies for one specific route\, so if you want to do a city trip before going to the accommodation location\, be sure to check whether or not the city is on route to the accommodation. It does not matter if you take a Belgian or Dutch train on the Belgian territory. This ticket however DOES NOT apply to any high speed firms or night trains. With an ICE ticket you are also not allowed to get onto Eurostar or the other way around.\n\n\n\nIt’s important to note: The Youth Ticket -26 is NOT always the cheaper option. Be sure to check the standard fare because for short journeys this might actually be cheaper than €7.5\n\n\n\n\nGroups \n\n\n\n\nGroups are recommended to buy a Youth Multi\, which has 10 rides on it\, not connected to a name. This can be bought at a train station for 62 euro or you can buy it directly from the NMBS/SNCB app for €60. The paper version you will have to fill in with a pen. The app version can be activated in the NMBS/SNCB app (and has to be activated multiple times depending on how many you are travelling with).\n\n\n\nThe Orga Team is also going to do a city tour of Leuven on Friday afternoon after the WRC. For this the transportation costs are not included in the price of the WRC.\n\n\n\n\nDepending on your itinerary\, it can be much cheaper to buy a domestic ticket in one of the neighboring countries until the last stop before crossing the border into Belgium (for example Aachen/ Lille). When you get in the last stop\, it can be cheaper to buy a ticket for the short journey between the two border stops. Once in Belgium\, you can use the Youth Pass or Youth Multi to get from the border town all the way to Tielen with just one ticket. This ticket is difficult to find online\, therefore\, I would buy it at the blue vending machine of the Belgian train company (SNCB/NMBS) in the foreign station. \n\n\n\n\n\nCar\n\n\n\nIf you are visiting some cities in Belgium\, a Low Emission Zone might apply\, which means your car needs to be of a certain environmental standard. These LEZ are enforced in Ghent\, Antwerp and Brussels. You can check if your car is allowed here: There are park and rides on the city margins. \n\n\n\n\nGhent \n\nhttps://lez.stad.gent/en/flows/controleertoegang\n\n\n\n\n\nAntwerp\n\nhttps://lez.antwerpen.be/?taal=EN\n\n\n\n\n\nBrussels\n\nhttps://lez.brussels/mytax/en/\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarpoolsheet\n\n\n\nIn order to promote more sustainable ways of travel\, we greatly encourage all participants coming by car with some seats left to register in the carpoolsheet. You can give your starting location and your route so people could be picked up along the way. This saves costs and is more sustainable then everyone driving alone. This is also a great way to meet people! The carpoolsheet will be communicated to the participants later on! \n\n\n\n\n\nBus\n\n\n\nThere are flixbus stations in Antwerp\, Brussels and Turnhout. From Turnhout it makes more sense to take a bus instead of train to the accomodation. Belgian buses cost around 2 euros. In Flanders\, you should buy tickets from DeLijn (yellow buses) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nCycling\n\n\n\nBiking infrastructure is great in the Netherlands and Belgium so feel free to come by bike. You should bring a lock with you as well to safely store your bike during the WRC! \n\n\n\nHitchhiking\n\n\n\nHitchhiking is not common but can be done as well. Any clothes that show that you are a talkative youngster and sign that shows where you want to go will help to get you there in no time. \n\n\n\n\n\nPlane\n\n\n\nWhilst we do not support plane travel because of its high emissions\, we do understand that for some people it is quite unrealistic to make the journey to the WRC by train\, bus or car. Here are some tips to get to the accomodation quickly and cheaply. \n\n\n\nBrussels Airport-Zaventem (BE)\n\n\n\nIf you fly to Brussels Airport Zaventem\, you can take the train from Brussels Airport to Tielen with one change. Remember\, you have to pay an Airport Tax of 6 euros if you take the train from and to the airport. If you really don’t have any money and you want to be extra cheap\, you can walk or take the bus to another station. There you don’t have to pay an airport tax. The most convenient route is to just take the train from Brussel Airport. For more information about train fares\, check the train section \n\n\n\nEindhoven Airport (NL)\n\n\n\nThis airport is located close to Eindhoven in the Netherlands. They have plenty of cheap flights from airlines like WizzAir and Ryanair. From Eindhoven\, you can take the train from Eindhoven-Centraal to Breda\, then to Antwerp-Berchem and from there to Tielen. You can get your tickets from this site: https://www.b-europe.com/EN (don’t forget to change your age to get youth discount!) \n\n\n\nCharleroi Airport- Brussels South (BE)\n\n\n\nThis airport is NOT near Brussels at all\, but it does have more cheaper flights. You get to Tielen the quickest way by taking the shuttle bus from the airport straight to Brussels-South station. In Brussel you can take a direct train to Tielen. Note: Check in which train station you arrive with the shuttle bus and if you can get a direct train to Tielen from there. For more information about train fares\, check the train section.

SUMMARY:Eastern Regional Congress 2024
DESCRIPTION:Within the framework of the Czech EGEA entities\, we decided to organize a congress dedicated to the topic of Mobility shifts. We wish to take you on an adventure to discover how has mobility changed in the past. One of the most recent changes in paradigms of human mobility was caused by the covid-19 pandemic. What other dramatic changes have happened in the last few years? One of the workshop sessions will be dedicated to this topic\, others will dive into the areas of sustainable tourism\, history of internationalism\, remote sensing\, spas and hydrology\, noise pollution and animal habitat displacement. Do not miss the chance to take part in the only urban congress of 2024 and register with your EGEA account. \n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nTheme of the congress is Mobility shifts. Our workshops will focus on changes covid-19 pandemic brought to the human society\, but also on local mineral springs and the changes they are encountering. The scientific topic can be broadly understood as focus on breaking points and changes of paradigms. This will connect human- and physical- geography oriented workshops. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbove you can see the venue for scientific and EGEA programme of ERC 2024\, the Frédéric Chopin House in Mariánské Lázně \n\n\n\nSuit up for this special occasion\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us to engage in the very last ERC. We will start off the congress with a gala opening\, so make sure to bring something sophisticated. The more of a distinguished lady or gentleman you will be\, the more you will fit in the spa environment. After all\, “šaty dělají člověka.” \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nWe are inviting you to Czechia. Our congress will take place in a town environment. Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) consists of 13\,000 inhabitants as well as thousands of visitors at any point in time. We will be using multiple facilities (buildings) for the duration of the congress. During excursions you will be able to visit pristine natural reserve Kladská\, vibrant Karlovy Vary and hike towards breathtaking views in this hilly part of the country. \n\n\n\n\n\nTransportation\n\n\n\nReach the location of congress by train. Place of accommodation is few hundred meters from the main station Mariánské Lázně. Trips from Nürnberg and Prague take a little over 2 hours. You will also be able to find connections through Cheb (Eger) and through Plzeň (Pilsen). Flixbus operates a convenient Frankfurt–Cheb line. For holders of ISIC card travelling inside of Czechia: you can get a ticket from Brno for €12.3\, from Praha for €5.7 or from Ostrava for €16 \n\n\n\nWho is behind this project?\n\n\n\nWe are a team of 11 proud EGEAns from all parts of Czechia. The people owning this project are Adéla Husáková\, Denisa Hadrová\, Jan Brodský\, Kateřina Podzimková\, Kryštof Richter\, Jakub Joksch\, Ľuboš Rybnikár\, Matyáš Ludvík\, Miroslava Pazourková\, Monika Zuzaňáková and Ondřej Míka. We are a non-profit event. If you have any questions\, don’t hesitate to contact us at participants.erc2024@egea.eu \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistrations for the Eastern Regional Congress are closed as of December 2023. However\, attendees from our partner’s organizations are still more than welcome to register by sending us email to erc2024@egea.eu. Two-day programme (one overnight stay) is offered at a flat rate of 1700 CZK. SUMMARY:EuroMed Regional Congress 2024
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Alps are one of the most important\, but also threatened ecosystems in Europe. Withincreasing pressures in the form of tourism\, traffic\, urban development\, and climatechange\, this fragile region needs green solutions and plans for a more sustainable andenvironment-friendly future. That’s why we invite you to the Julian Alps in NW Slovenia to feel the sunny side of the Alps and explore how people have been living in this unforgiving environment for centuries and how the sustainable development of mountain areas can provide a greener tomorrow for the region. \n\n\n\nTOPIC\n\nLOCATION\n\nHOW TO GET THERE\n\nPROGRAMME\n\nWORKSHOPS\n\nSCIENTIFIC EXCURSIONS\n\nLEISURE EXCURSIONS\n\nORGATEAM\n\nSPONSORS\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTOPIC\n\n\n\nOur congress aims to highlight the Slovene part of the Julian Alps\, which we like to regard as the sunny side of the Alps\, showcasing projects\, ideas and traditions which help build a future\, geared towards a peaceful cohabitation between people\, animals\, plants and heritage of this protected mountainous area. We will focus on both human and natural topics and their interactions while tackling the challenges which this regions is facing. To present solutions and a less bleak picture of the Alps\, it is of vital importance to pinpoint and address these threats and problems\, which include among others climate change\, mass tourism\, increased traffic\, pressures on the region’s fragile water sources\, habitat loss and others. Our hope is that participants will leave the congress with ambitions\, ideas and motivation to take action themselves and ensure a resource and climate-friendly future for all European alpine regions. \n\n\n\nLOCATION\n\n\n\nOur congress will take place in a youth hostel\, a 15 min walk from the alpine town of Kranjska Gora\, famous for its ski resort and an abundance of starting points for mountaineering opportunities in the summertime. It is also one of the destinations awarded theSlovenia Green label. The hostel is located in the heart of the Pišnica valley on the first leg of the Vršič mountain pass\, the highest in Slovenia. Only 500 m from the Jasna lakes and on the doorstep of the Triglav National Park\, it is surrounded by towering mountains exceeding 2000 m such as Špik\, Škrlatica and Prisojnik. It is built in a traditional alpine style with seven shared rooms\, two chilling rooms\, and a large dining hall/party room. The hostel is located right next to the river and includes a bonfire place and a sports playground\, while also being a starting point for many hikes in the surrounding nature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHOW TO GET THERE\n\n\n\nLocated deep in the Alps\, Kranjska Gora might not be connected to the rail or highway network\, and travelling to it by public transport might take a bit longer\, but we encourage you to opt for sustainable transport options and enjoy the scenic journey to reach it. After all\, it is impossible to imagine the future of alpine regions without supporting sustainable mobility! For more info and tips on how you can make your journey here as sustainable as possible\, check theSustainable Mobility page of the Slovene Tourism Boardand the Green Slovenia guidelines. \n\n\n\n\nBy bus 🚌 \nSlovenia is well connected to the rest of Europe with long-distance FlixBus lines. The nearest Flixbus station to our accommodation is inBledbut not all Flixbuses stop there\, as it is directly connected to only 16 cities across Europe.Ljubljana Flixbus station\, on the other hand\, is connected to 156 cities\, while just over the border in Austria\,Villach Flixbus stationis connected to 46 cities. Several smaller bus companies also run services especially from the former Yugoslavian countries to Ljubljana\, Kranj\, Bled\, and even Jesenice. You can check all of the international bus connections on theLjubljana bus station International Travel map\, where timetables are also available. \n\n\n\nBuses are probably the most convenient and common mode of transport in the Slovene countryside\, and if you aren’t arriving by car\, bike or on foot\, you will have to take a bus to get to Kranjska Gora after arriving in Slovenia. Beware that paying by card is still usually not possible on buses\, and you might be left to the mercy of the often not very cheerful and English-savvy bus drivers if you try to pay with a 50€ bill. You can check the timetables of regional and local buses and also buy bus tickets on the website of theLjubljana main bus station\, but keep in mind that only direct routes are shown and a ticket bought online must still be printed before the journey to be valid\, a pdf on the phone won’t work (we realise how absurd this is and apologise in the name of our chaotic public transport system). For connections within Gorenjska (such as from Jesenice to Kranjska Gora)\, theArriva websiteoften works best and displays all the available direct buses\, but does not offer online tickets. Here’s how you can reach us after arriving in Slovenia: \n\n\n\n\nvia Ljubljana: there are hourly direct buses to Kranjska Gora from the main bus station in Ljubljana (Ljubljana AP in Slovene\, next to the main railway station) taking around 2 hours. Keep a lookout for buses with “Rateče Planica” displayed on the info board\, since that is the usual final stop for buses heading to Kranjska Gora.\n\n\n\nvia Bled: there are hourly buses between Bled and the Jesenice railway station bus stop (Jesenice ŽP in SLO) on multiple routes. From Jesenice\, you can take a direct bus to Kranjska Gora. Another option is to take the train from Bled Jezero (don’t confuse that with the Lesce-Bled station\, which is located in Lesce 4 km away from Bled) to Jesenice and catch the bus from there (but keep in mind that the Bled railway station is located 2\,3 km away from the Bled bus station\, but the gentle stroll along the lake shore connecting both is very scenic!)\n\n\n\nvia Villach: unfortunately\, you can only catch a bus from Villach to Bled or Ljubljana. The best option would therefore be to take a train to Jesenice and change to a bus there\, or look into ridesharing options.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy train 🚞\nEven though the last train to Kranjska Gora and further towards Planica departed back in 1966\, it is still possible to complete a part of the journey on the same route by taking a train to Jesenice\, which is a 30-minute bus ride away. Most international trains to and from Germany stop in Jesenice\, from where you can catch a direct bus just opposite the train station from the Jesenice ŽP bus station (check the bus section above). \n\n\n\nYou can also reach Jesenice by train from Ljubljana. There are regular departures\, and it is both faster\, cheaper\, and more comfortable than taking the bus. If you want to start your alpine exploration in style\, consider taking theTransalpina trainfrom Sežana on the Karst plateau\, Nova Gorica\, the Soča valley\, or Bohinjska Bistrica to Jesenice. The Transalpina was voted as one of the top 50 most scenic train journeys in the world by Lonely Planet\, with parts of it being placed on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list\, including the world’s longest stone arch railroad bridge! \n\n\n\nIf you feel adventurous (or have money for a taxi ride)\, you could arrive from the west and get off at Tarvisio Boscoverde station in Italy\, which is served by by several long-distance trains with direct connections to places such as Venice\, Rome\, Cinque Terre\, Trieste\, and many cities in Austria and Germany. You then have four options: you can hike 15 km along the Juliana long-distance hiking trail (which follows the cycling path for the most part on this stage\, so keep that in mind and find alternative hikes such as the Alpe Adria Trail if you’re more into single-trail/off-road hiking)\, cycle the same distance along the former disused railway track on the D-2/Jure Robič Cycling Trail\,hitchhikeor call a taxi to Kranjska Gora. Similar but more hilly and longer adventures await if you decide to end your journey by train in Villach. \n\n\n\nTo search for international train connections\, we suggest you use theDeutsche Bahn websiteor theÖBB Trip Planner. For connections within Slovenia\, you can also use the webpage of theSlovene railways(available only in Slovene for some reason…) or the Grem z vlakom/Go by Train mobile app\, where you can also buy tickets. If you are travelling in a group of 6 or more Egeans\, you can buy the discounted group tickets at the station (50% off if you are all under 26\, 30% if older). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy car 🚗\nPick up Egeans along the way and turn your journey to the EMRC into a scenic Alpine road trip! You can reach Kranjska Gora by car from four sides: from the east via the regional road from Jesenice\, from the north over the Korensko sedlo/Wurzenpass mountain pass from Austria\, from the west over the Adriatic – Black Sea drainage divide from Italy\, or from the south over the Vršič mountain pass\, the highest in Slovenia (but the pass might still be closed due to snow in April; in that case\, you can use the just-as-scenic detour over the Predel pass and via Italy). Another unique adventure if arriving or continuing to the Soča valley is to use themotorailservice between Bohinjska Bistrica and Most na Soči/Nova Gorica and “ride” with your car on one of the most scenic alpine train journeys! \n\n\n\nYou can also use the most popular ridesharing service in Slovenia calledPrevoz.org(site again unfortunately only available in Slovene) or the more Europe-wideBlaBlaCar. \n\n\n\nStay tuned for a ridesharing form\, where you can offer a ride to other Egeans! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy plane 🛬\nAfter the demise of our national carrier Adria Airways\, direct flights toLjubljana Jože Pučnik Airportare now relatively scarce and\, apart from a few low-cost options\, quite costly. If other sustainable transport options don’t work for you and you manage to find a good deal for flights to Ljubljana\, getting to Kranjska Gora won’t be that problematic. There are hourly buses leaving the airport bus station (Brnik/airport Ljubljana on the Arriva website) to Kranj (keep in mind there is a more direct 15-minute route and a “scenic” 30-minute route going through all the villages on the way to Kranj). In Kranj\, change buses at Kranj “main station” (Kranj AP in Slovene\, literally just a bunch of very disorganised bus stops spread around a random street corner\, so check carefully the platform of the bus you are transfering to (buses to Kranjska Gora tend to leave from platform 13 closest to the “main building”)). Check the bus schedule on theArriva webpage. \n\n\n\nInstead of flying directly to Ljubljana\, it might be cheaper and faster to fly to one of our neighbouring airports\, such as Trieste\, Venice (Treviso and Marco Polo)\, Zagreb\, or even Vienna. There are some Flixbus connections from these airports\, however\, a more popular option (but often not cheaper\, especially if you are travelling solo) is to book aGoopti transfer(a company Slovenes founded just to take them to neighbouring airports because Ljubljana airport didn’t have any cheap flights😅). If you choose that option\, write to us at emrc2024.participants@egea.eu\, because we can get you a 10% discount for Goopti. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy bike 🚵\nWanna embrace the green spirit of the EMRC and feel like one of theSlovene cycling superstarswhile battling your way over mountain passes with amazing vistas of the Alps? Then this is the section for you! Cycling has become immensely popular in Slovenia in the past decades and has exploded in the past few years with our success on the competitive level. This also means a constant improvement of cycling infrastructure and the freedom to ride safely and comfortably around the country. \n\n\n\nWe encourage you to complete at least part of your journey by bike. This can mean taking advantage of one of many bike-sharing systems set up around the country (for instance\, the widely popularBicikeLjin Ljubljana\, which costs only 1€ for a weekly subscription\, or the newly established region-wideGorenjska.bike system\, which allows you to start and end your journey in any of the 50 stations distributed around Gorenjska for just 10€ per month). Those who are looking for a more adventurous arrival to the congress\, though\, are more than welcome to take advantage of the manylong-distance biking trailsand thebikes-on-trains initiativeto arrive at the congress in style! Kranjska Gora itself is located on two famous long-distance bikig trails: theD-2/Jure Robič Cycling trailrunning along the former railway from Jesenice all the way to Tarvisio in Italy or the more avanturisticJuliana mountain bike loopcircling the Julian Alps and crossing the Vršič mountain pass\, which reaches an elevation of 1\,611 metres and has 50 numbered hairpin bends like the famous Tour de France climb to Alpe d’Huez. This vast protected area\, which spans 840 km²\, is home to more than 2300 inhabitants\, while more than 2 million people visit it yearly. This all means that managing different interests is vital to ensuring a well-preserved nature\, landscape\, and cultural heritage. All of these guidelines\, of course\, also present an obstacle for the development of tourism\, which has become the main source of income for the park’s inhabitants\, while also proving to be a huge incentive\, boosting the area’s economy and changing its social composition. \n\n\n\n\nWolves\, bears\, and capercaillies: Cohabiting with protected animals in the Julian Alps\nWorkshop co-leaders: Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation and Dinaricum society \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Julian Alps are home to more than 7000 animal species\, many of them protected. While the locals have more or less successfully lived side by side with other species for decades\, increasing pressures such as the development of winter tourism\, increased traffic\, and the spread of second homes\, among others\, have all led to a rise in conflicts\, making the question of protected species an important political topic in the region as well. We will focus on two specific challenges in the area: firstly\, the conflict between the expansion of the Kranjska Gora ski resort and the habitats of the capercaillie or wood grouse\, and secondly\, the management of large carnivores\, especially wolves and bears\, and their associated conflicts. \n\n\n\n\nThe blue gold and how to protect it: Alpine water sources and their challenges\nWorkshop co-leaders: Renata Škvarč\, Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe area of Triglav National Park\, with up to 3000 mm of annual precipitation and over 250 springs\, presents one of the most water-rich areas of Central Europe and an important reservoir of drinking water for the whole country. While these resources are plentiful\, they aren’t infinite\, as has already been demonstrated in the exceptionally dry year of 2022\, where many springs ran dry and the alpine lakes faced the worst algal blooms to date. That’s why the preservation of these reserves and water-friendly spatial planning are even more important\, while research into the geological\, biological\, and other characteristics of these water sources is a major topic. \n\n\n\n\nMelting glaciers and dying forests: Climate change and its effects in the Julian Alps\nWorkshop co-leaders: Anton Melik Geographical Institute \n\n\n\n\n\n\nClimate change will be the defining factor responsible for the rapid change of the fragile mountainous landscape in the coming decades. The tiny Triglav glacier\, the last glacier in the Julian Alps\, has already felt the wrath of it\, its size diminishing from 14 hectares in 1946 to less than a hectare nowadays. Climate change drastically affects the water cycle\, producing more and more green winters while also altering the alpine vegetation. While certain species\, including invasives\, are on the rise\, many habitats\, but especially forests\, are less lucky\, being prone to severe natural disasters and a change in species composition. \n\n\n\n\n\nSCIENTIFIC EXCURSIONS\n\n\n\nUpper Soča Valley excursionMojstrana and Vrata valley excursionPlanica and Zelenci excursion\n\nFollowing the path of tradition down the emerald beauty\n\n\n\nOn this excursion led by Triglav National Park\, we will discover the upper course of the beautiful Soča river with its gorges\, traditional villages\, and mountain vistas\, while also crossing one of the famous alpine passes\, Vršič or Predel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMountaneering history\, glacial valleys\, and waterfalls\n\n\n\nWe’ll firstly discover the alpine village of Mojstrana with its innovative Slovene Mountaineering Museum. Afterwards we will tackle the issue of traffic management in alpine valleys while touring the glacial Vrata valley with the Peričnik waterfall and the largest mountain wall in the Eastern Alps. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe valley of nordic sports and springs\n\n\n\nPlanica has always held a special place in the hearts of Slovenians\, symbolising our love for sport\, mountains\, and outstanding achievements. We will explore this fascinating nordic centre by bike and tackle the challenges and solutions the developers faced when building such infrastructure in the heart of the Alps. We will also stop by the emerald Zelenci springs\, where we will touch up on the issues of climate change and alpine water sources. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEISURE EXCURSIONS\n\n\n\nEasy hikeHard hike\n\nKrnica glacial valley and the Russian chapel\n\n\n\nThe Krnica valley is a typical example of a scenic glacial valley\, cutting 6 km deep into the mountains of Triglav National Park. We will follow the sparkling waters of the Pišnica stream past active pastures to meadows surrounded by two-thousand metre high peaks\, with the 2600 m high Razor being the tallest. We will also stop by the Russian chapel\, a unique cultural monument built in 1916 by surviving Russian prisoners of war to commemorate those who died during the construction of the road across the Vršič pass. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisoki Mavrinc\n\n\n\nIt wouldn’t be an alpine congress without at least one proper alpine hike\, right? Visoki Mavrinc is a 1562 metre high mountain peak with epic views over the Krnica valley and towards the towering mountain peaks all around it\, from Slovenia’s second-highest mountain Škrlatica at 2740 m\, to the Karavanke mountains on the border with Austria and the mystical Prisank with its Heathen Maiden rock formation. The views are well worth the hike\, trust us\, and it’s the perfect location to recreate the Kekec shout since the movies were filmed in the valley below! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nORGATEAM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPONSORS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\n\nSUPPORT FUND\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to apply for the Support Fund\, which was set up to help Egeans in need to attend important EGEA events such as congresses and OSMs. \n\n\n\nPlease remember that EGEAns can apply for the Support Fund to help finance attending this event only while registration for this event remains open!!! \n\n\n\nYou can find more info on the Support Fund and how to apply here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n EGEA Alicante\n EGEA Augsburg - SUMMARY:North & Baltic Regional Congress 2024
DESCRIPTION:Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nTopic\n\nLocation\n\nProgram\n\nWorkshops\n\nTrainings\n\nOrgateam\n\n\n\ntopic\n\n\n\nNature is boundless and rarely has rigid lines of division. Instead\, it unfolds in a slow gradient\, transitioning from one ecosystem to another\, thus creating nice harmony without hard edges and boundaries. This year’s NBRC topic is Ecotones – the meeting and transition points between ecosystems or cultures. The word itself draws its roots from the ancient Greek words οἶκος for house and τόνος for tension. These ecological crossroads are not only hotspots for biodiversity\, but also epicentres of challenges. From wetlands and estuaries to the dynamic riverbanks and lake shores\, all these ecotones share a common trait – they are both hosts to a multitude of species and show sensitivity to the pressures of climate change\, urbanization\, and expanding agriculture. How can we find ways to preserve and respect these meeting areas? Can we find ways to incorporate this concept not only in ecology\, but also spatial planning\, urban and cultural geography? \n\n\n\nlocation\n\n\n\nThe congress will take place in the so-called “Lithuanian Switzerland”\, Molėtai municipality\, Čiulėnai village\, which is located around an hour’s drive from our capital Vilnius. The area is famous for its abundance of lakes\, dense forests and authentic settlements. Ever dreamed of living next to a lake? Our accommodation is situated right on the Lake Virintai shore! The Labanoras regional park and the Molėtai Astronomical Observatory\, which we hope to visit\, are right around the corner too! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nworkshops\n\n\n\n\nLake Depth Measuring: Introduction to Bathymetry\n\n\nWorkshop leader: dr. Laurynas Jukna \n\n\n\nLake depth measurements are essential for understanding the ecology of lakes: temperature gradients\, light availability and oxygen levels all depend on the lake depth and influence the distribution of various species by creating distinct habitats within lake. This workshop will provide insight about the bathymetry of the Lake Virintai next to our accomodation. We will compare different measuring techniques and already existings dataset\, see how sonar data looks like and learn how to use it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEcotone Effects on Animal Diversity\n\n\nWorkshop leaders: dr. Arūnas Samas & dr. Irena Nedveckytė \n\n\n\nIn this workshop you’ll have a wonderful opportunity to explore the surrounding nature\, get dirty and see species diversity in micro-ecotones yourself! “Ecotone Effects on Animal Diversity” will be led by one and only Dr. Arūnas Samas and Dr. Irena Nedveckytė. They are ecologists and lecturers who have been leading ecology student field practices for many years! Combining the knowledge of trap building methods and the importance of calculations – you will get to know the peculiarities of animal life in ecotones! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGIS for Cities: Landcover Extraction and Analysis for Functional Zone Identification\n\n\nWorkshop Leader Vaiva Venckauskaitė; Co-Leader Martyna Kazlauskaitė \n\n\n\nThis workshop is based on a real experimental project segment at ID Vilnius (leading GIS and spatial planning company in Vilnius) . City planners did not have any tools to check and monitor the city’s development after planning and construction project execution\, as well as the state of already realised sites. The workshop mainly focuses on showing how easily you can utilise code from GitHub for your own geospatial needs and expand your capabilities when GIS desktop applications are just not enough. But do not threat\, you will have to work with QGIS as well and predict functional zones in city blocks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWeather Forecast\n\n\nWorkshop leader: Miroslav Hakl (EGEA Praha) \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, led by Miroslav Hakl from EGEA Praha\, you will focus on working with data and learn where to get weather data and how to interpret it correctly. You will also try to collect weather data on the spot and make your own forecast! With focus on your country and the specifics of local weather conditions you can make a forecast for the following days for your hometown and follow up after you return from the congress to see if your forecast was correct. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealing with Nature: The Concept of Therapeutic Forests\n\n\nWorkshop Leader: Lukas Bevanda (EGEA Vienna) \n\n\n\nDelve deeper into the meaning and importance of natural resources and environments for us humans with Lukas from EGEA Vienna\, who will provide us with an insightful workshop about Therapeutic Forests. In the workshop\, you will learn about topics such as stress\, the nervous system\, physical processes\, sensory overload\, and how places such as Heringsdorf or the Shinrin Yoku concept have a healing effect and help us cope with all of this. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ntrainings & skill sessions\n\n\n\n\nFirst Aid Skill Session\n\n\nLeading: Arne and Chiara (EGEA Marburg) \n\n\n\nOutdoorsy EGEA Marburg members Arne and Chiara will provide first-aid skill session\, reminding us how to be safe in our adventures and what to do in the state of emergencies! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Journey to Self Acceptance & Self Care\n\n\nTrainers: Michel and Sina (EGEA Marburg) \n\n\n\nAs passionate advocates for personal development and well-being\, Michel and Sina from EGEA Marburg\, will guide participants through transformative journey\,  covering key aspects of self-acceptance and self-care\, offering participants practical tools and strategies to navigate their personal journeys. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCultivating Cultural Harmony: Embracing Unity in Diversity\n\n\nTrainer: Dunja Galinec (EGEA Zagreb) \n\n\n\nEGEA is full of different people from diverse cultures\, so in this training\, together with Dunja from EGEA Zagreb\, participants will learn how to practice cultural appreciation\, inclusivity and embrace our differences! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\norgateam

SUMMARY:Western REGIONAL Congress 2024
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLatest News\n\n\n\nThe Open Call for Workshopleaders and Trainers has started and is open until the 31th of December. For those of you who already have an idea for a workshop or training please see us on the 13th of December for a Q&A session on Zoom (see your entity emails for a link or contact us via wrc2024@egea.eu).We are looking forward to your applications!Workshop application formTrainer application form \n\n\n\nTopic\n\n\n\nSouthern Groningen and Drenthe have a history of underground energy resources\, heavily influencing the landscape until this day. To reach a sustainable future a transition to green energy is  required. \n\n\n\nThe Groningen natural gas field has been a topic of numerous discussions: the gas led to significant wealth but also resulted in a crisis of gas-related earthquakes damaging homes and buildings in the region. The impact on local communities is ongoing\, with a substantial restoration project spanning the entire region\, permanently altering the aesthetics of historic villages. The management of the gas-related earthquakes turned into a national political crisis\, eroding civilian faith in governmental competence. \n\n\n\nBesides the damage\, this crisis fueled the debate on the energy transition and the role that the province of Groningen is willing to play. Groningen has the potential to farm green energy like wind and solar energy. The geographical factors make this region a promising green energy area. On the other hand the province might not wish to be an area of energy farming again. \n\n\n\nWhile gas extraction in Groningen ended in October 2023\, the Wadden Sea gas fields and off-shore energy production by windmills are being considered as potential alternatives. Off-shore energy production has gained renewed relevance due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. However\, the effects of gas mining and off-shore wind farms are debated due to potential ecosystem impacts on this unique UNESCO Wadden Sea area. Off-shore farming also comes with new challenges like energy transportation and energy storing. \n\n\n\nSouthern Drenthe is home to the largest oil field in Western Europe. It marks the establishment of the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) in the oil village of Schoonebeek. For a long time\, it was seen as a great opportunity for locals\, and NAM contributed to numerous facilities for the local community. However\, due to the Groningen gas earthquakes\, there is now growing suspicion against NAM\, resulting in a strained relationship between the company and the villagers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe have some Ideas planned for great excursions. But those are still only ideas. Stay tuned for updates! \n\n\n\nRound trip; earthquakes in GroningenRound trip; oil\, energy and geologyCity and energy; Groningen city tour and harbour visitWalk; Nature\, landscape and tourismEasy bike; Archeology and glacial landscapeHard bike; Countryside of North Netherlands\n\nGas extraction from the Groningen Sandstone has caused induced earthquakes over the past decades. This resulted in extensive damage to buildings in a large part of the province. We are going to see the Groningen landscape and visit the affected region. \n\n\n\n\n\nLocated in the south of Drenthe and across the border in Germany\, we will visit some relatively unknown oil extractions as well as a geology museum. Potentially\, we will also visit a hydrogen initiative. \n\n\n\n\n\nGroningen is the largest city and significant (historic) centre of the Groningen-Drenthe region. Join us on a city tour! Additionally\, we will visit the industrial harbour and power plant.  \n\n\n\n\n\nDrenthe is a very green province with some sandy soil and a bit more elevation (25m\, 10-20m prominence) than the bordering provinces. This creates some natural regions. In this excursion we take a look at the forest\, creeks and tourisms in the national park directly next to our accommodation. \n\n\n\n\n\nDrenthe is known for the rocks and boulders that came from Norway during the last glaciation. These were used to construct megalithic graves (dolmen) during the late stone age. We will visit these monuments and explore some of the historic landscapes and their histories. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe wouldn’t be in the Netherlands without riding a bike! We will make a day trip through the forest\, past a lake and across some countryside. We will probably also see some of these prehistoric graves as well. The whole route is flat and will be a casual ride but with quite some distance! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nWe prepared a few potential workshops for you but if you think we are missing an important aspect of our topic please let us know and apply for your own workshop! \n\n\n\n\n\nShaking Grounds: Gasmining and Earthquakes in GroningenMoving Soils: Understanding Soil Subsidence in the NetherlandsEmbodied Experiences of Disasters in Slow-Motion \n\nGas mining was practiced for 60 years in Groningen. With it came economic prosperity and environmental damage. We want to explore how it came to this situation. How are gas fields created and why of all places in Groningen? What is the economic value of gas mining and what outcomes should you expect? What will change now that the gas mining stopped? \n\n\n\nWe want to give our participants the possibility to work on one of those research questions and in the end create a little info-slide of it\, which can be posted on social media\, as well as a lot of stickers! (An EGEA Bochum speciality) \n\n\n\nWith the situation being that the workshop groups will be quite big\, our participants will work in smaller groups so they can get to know each other even better! \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on a journey beneath the surface as we delve into the world of soil subsidence in the Netherlands. This workshop offers the opportunity to explore the causes and consequences of sinking ground levels from a physical geographical perspective. Afterwards\, we will have a closer look at how to deal with and even prevent this process from a human geographical view.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between natural processes and human activities that led to the gradual sinking of the Dutch landscape.  \n\n\n\nUncover the mysteries below ground and become part of the workshop to ensure a resilient and sustainable future for the Netherlands! \n\n\n\n\n\nThe interactive and creative workshop is about the reflection of the intricate entanglement of individual experiences\, societal structures\, and the impact of disaster in the context of our capitalist system. We will focus on the profound effects of extractivism on individuals and communities using the feminist concept of embodiment and a participatory counter mapping approach. In our workshop\, we will take the past\, present and future consequences of the gas extraction in Groningen as example to discuss how ‘disaster in slow motion’ shape the embodiment and imagination of extractivism and protests. The creative engagement in counter mapping provides a powerful tool to not only analyse but also actively engage your own embodied experiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Might be changed \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOCATION AND ACCOMODATION\n\n\n\nThe name “Drenthe” is believed to mean “three lands\,” and once you discover its beauty\, you’ll know why. \n\n\n\nDrenthe is a province known for its vast forests and serene rivers. It’s one of the country’s least crowded regions\, making it a haven for nature lovers. \n\n\n\nFor our accomodation „De Kwartjesberg“ we secured a maximum capacity of 112 people meaning there’s plenty of space for everyone. \n\n\n\nDuring the breaks get ready for some serious fun! Cause we have beach volleyball court\, basketball court\, and ping-pong table – perfect for leisure activities. \n\n\n\nPlus\, with our unique forest location\, you’ll have the privacy you deserve\, surrounded by the beauty of nature. EGEA is also a European geography association that aims to strengthen the strategic position of Geography in Europe. Being EGEAns not just means to study geography but to identify as geographers\, because we believe in what we are doing. Our success is built on the work each EGEAn is putting into this great association to build an innovative and better future for all. \n\n\n\nHowever\, if you want to change the world\, you have to know how to pay for it.\n\n\n\nFinancial support for congresses\, refunding travel costs for official positions\, hosting the EGEA website\, merch\, and giveaways\, etc. all these things cost money. Therefore\, the missing money from the EU Grant left a big hole on our bank account. For the last two years the Finance Team tried to find new long-term sponsors to plug this financial hole but had to realize how difficult it was getting long-term sponsors on board under the given structures. \n\n\n\nThis problem was the seed for many internal discussions about strengths\, structural shortcomings and how we could go about fixing them and made us come up with a new project idea to address these challenges: EGEA 2.0. The project is now ready to be rolled out on the big floor\, including every EGEAn in the process of finding sustainable long-term solutions. It addresses not only EGEA’s issue of eligibility to receive financial support\, but also the communication strategy and visibility of our work in general to create new opportunities and make EGEA known and being an EGEAn valued beyond EGEA. This project wants to tackle all there is to EGEA and build a sustainable foundation that guarantees its future. \n\n\n\nIn this session we will mostly discuss and collect all strengths and weaknesses we as an organization show and the ways we approach them today. Questions on EGEAs struggles and future will be elaborated on this session\, where we try to understand current dynamics and structures and initiate a transformation towards a stronger\, more financially stable\, and resilient association with even more great opportunities for our members.  \n\n\n\nThis is the time and place for every EGEAn to express their concerns about EGEAs current state. We would love to hear how you envision EGEA in 5 years and what concrete ideas you have. \n\n\n\nWe are looking forward to holding this session online\, enabling even more EGEAns to participate and making this process more democratic. Maybe after this OSM session you are curious about working on EGEAs future and want to be part of this project. 😊 \n\n\n\nThank you for your consideration and support\, \n\n\n\nWiebke and CarolaFinance Team Coordinators \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrga Team\n\n\n\nThis unit has no representatives

SUMMARY:EUROMED REGIONAL CONGRESS 2023
DESCRIPTION:EuroMed Regional Congress 2023 – Managing Tourism and Heritage \n\n\n\nIf you want to know more about the EuroMed Regional Congress in 2023\, keep scrolling! For more information\, follow us on Instagram and Facebook profiles! \n\n\n\nhttps://www.instagram.com/emrc2023/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D\n\nFacebook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\ndays till congress \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nsea & stones\n\n\n\n\n\nEMRC23 logo\n\n\n\n\nMurter island\n\n\n\n\n\nTOPIC INTRODUCTION\n\n\n\nCroatia’s Adriatic coastline has a long tradition of tourism. Its warm sea\, thousands of islands\, and abundance of sunshine\, along with preserved nature and cultural heritage attract many tourists from all over the world during the summer days. However\, focusing only on mass maritime\, sun and sea tourism\, based solely in coastal regions brings with it logistical\, economic\, ecological and sociocultural pressures\, management difficulties and problems. \n\n\n\nSo\, how do we expand beyond\, offer something different\, offer something more? How do we present natural and cultural heritage to tourists while still making sure that it’s preserved and kept for future generations? How can we successfully manage mass tourism and its problems? We couldnt have found a better place for hosting this years EMRC23 with such a theme than the dalmation coast\, specifically the Murter island! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation and acomodation\n\n\n\nThe Dalmatian coast is where most of the tourist activities take place. Murter is a small island located in Šibenik-Knin county\, about 34 km up the coast from Šibenik. The island isconnected to the mainland by a small drawbridge\, passing through the town of Tisno. The island covers an area of 18.7 sq. km. and its population is just over 3\,600. Hotel Reflektor is located on the bay of Slanica\, in the southern part of the Murter island. \n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNatural heritage includes all geographically\, biologically and ecologically valuable natural sights and values\, while the most principal are protected as nature parks\, nature reserves etc.  \n\n\n\nTheir potential is seen in the possibility of developing tourism in rural areas and ecotourism\, alongside highlighting the importance of protecting local ecosystems and making sure they don’t succumb to the growing phenomenon of mass tourism. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will try to showcase their increasing importance in tourism and explain different ways to enable protection of said natural heritage. \n\n\n\n\n\nMass tourism is becoming the dominant form of tourism in the world\, with many countries having both good and bad examples of dealing with said issues. Our homeland is no different\, with Croatia most often being represented by maritime sun and sea tourism\, with visitor numbers growing each year.  \n\n\n\nDespite the high number of tourist arrivals\, overnight stays and the income generated from mass tourism\, it is highly unsustainable and brings various ecological\, cultural and economical problems.  \n\n\n\nThe goal of this workshop is to answer the question: “How to successfully manage mass tourism and minimize or eliminate the problems it creates in various places?’’ \n\n\n\n\n\nCultural tourism is extremely important through the preservation of heritage and identity and enabling heritage conservancy through sustainable tourism valorization. Possibilities of reducing seasonality\, spatial dispersion of various tourism offerings\, strengthening of national and local identity\, education\, protection\, restoration and sustainable management of cultural heritage are the topics covered by this workshop\, alongside trying to answer the question ‘’How to successfully recognize cultural heritage and work on its direct conservation?’’. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScientific Excursions\n\n\n\n\nThe largest natural lake in Croatia and a wetland ecosystem that is one of the most threatened habitats of the world. A natural cryptodepression separated from the Adriatic Sea by a narrow strip of land yet connected to the sea by a man-made canal\, makes a truly diverse habitat\, home to hundreds of species both in flora and fauna. \n\n\n\nAn educational trail set in karst and makia will take us to the highest point of the nature park – Viewpoint Kamenjak\, where we will enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire Vransko Lake\,  Murter island\, Kornati Archipelago and more. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe seven tufa cascades of the Krka River might be one of the most famous tourist sites in Croatia which makes it perfect for exploring the impact of mass tourism on nature\, especially the delicate tufa formations.  \n\n\n\nFrom the small town of Skradin\, located where the Krka estuary forms Lake Prokljan\, where nautical tourism also thrives due to its connection to the sea\, we will cycle to Skradinski buk\, the last and the biggest cascade on the river flowing over seventeen barriers\, making it the most beautiful as well as the most exploited site in the park. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrga Team\n\n\nEMRC23 Orga TeamStella Štefanac – Main coordinator + Graphic design & PRLeon Puljević – Vice coordinator + Participant coordinatorDenni Kunjas – Scientific coordinatorKorana Komar – Financial & Fundraising CoordinatorKlara Grošanić – Financial & Fundraising CoordinatorAleksandar Vojvodić – Excursions coordinatorLorena Zvonarić – Trainings & green coordinator\, Excursions coordinatorNiko Živanović – Day program coordinatorBarbara Kurtov – Day program coordinatorBernarda Krolo – Night program coordinatorAntonio Novak – Night program coordinator

SUMMARY:NBRC 2023 - Baltic Sea(l)
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by EGEA’s theme year 2023 “Water for Life”\, we wanted to dedicate the congress to the Baltic Sea as it connects our lovely North and Baltic region into one. Majority of the North and Baltic entities are also located directly at the coast of the Baltic sea\, which enables us to better understand and study the consequences of climate change (e.g. sea level rise)\, state of biodiversity\, transnational mobility of individuals as well as sustainable energy and geopolitical developments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNBRC23 Instagram\n\n\n\nlocation\n\n\n\nThe accommodation is located right next to the sea in Northern Estonia in one of our summer destinations Võsu. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nRemote Sensing Workshop – SARSea you later – time-space changes using SAR image analyzis. We will explore how Synthetic Aperture Radar “sees” the Baltic Sea and its coast – water\, ice and land. We will compute SAR images using radar amplitude and phase information.Workshop leader: Tauri Tampuu\, PhD \n\n\n\nSatellite remote sensing of cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic SeaHalf the oxygen we breathe every day is made by algae and their importance is enormous. Nevertheless\, when disruption occurs e.g.\, nutrient run-off (agricultural fertilizer and sewage)\, phytoplankton and algae grow rapidly causing intense blooms. Excessive growth can cause oxygen depletion and cause dead zones in the water. Some phytoplankton blooms (mainly cyanobacteria) produce hazardous toxins and are called Harmful Algal Blooms. Cyanobacterial blooms all over the world as well as in the Baltic Sea have increased over the years causing negative ecological and economic impacts. Monitoring algae and their blooms are therefore crucial. When there is a high concentration of pigmented phytoplankton cells\, the colour of the water changes\, and that change can be monitored by satellite sensors. For example\, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites can be used to estimate water quality and detect algal blooms. In the workshop\, Sentinel-3 OLCI data will be used to analyze the cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea\, and the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) will be needed to process the data (https://step.esa.int/main/download/snap-download/). ESA/ESRIN provides the SNAP user tool for free.Workshop leaders: Kaire Toming\, PhD (Estonian Marine Institute\, University of Tartu) Martin Ligi\, PhD (Estonian Marine Institute\, University of Tartu) \n\n\n\nBiodiverse rivers contribute to a healthy Baltic SeaRivers and the Baltic Sea are strongly tied together\, since aquatic animals are moving between these environments and sediments are transported with the riverflow from terrestrial landscape to the sea. Unfortunately also excess nutrients from the land are carried downstream. Almost 70% of total nitrogen coming to the Baltic Sea is from riverine origin\, from which large proportion is from anthropogenic sources (HELCOM 2018).Healthy rivers full of life are able to self-purificate themselves better and transport less nutrients to the sea. In the workshop we will catch aquatic invertebrates from the river Võsu and explore the food web pathways improving the water quality. We will also visit some anthropogenic pressures impacting the river.Join the workshop to see and experience the riverine landscape closely!Workshop leader: Jürgen Karvak (University of Tartu) \n\n\n\nTools for planning coastal landscapesIn Europe\, the 22 coastal Member States were obliged under the Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) Directive to develop a national maritime spatial plan at the latest by 31 March 2021\, which was delayed by COVID-19 pandemic. Each country had different input\, methods and outcome\, for example in Finland sea can be privately owned\, in Estonia sea belongs to the state and in Latvia the local governments have the right to plan coastal waters. The lecture and the workshop will be based on two previous projects in Lahemaa National Park: SustainBaltic and Land-Sea-Act that looked at terraqueous landscapes in a more detailed manner. In the lecture a small introduction is made to the sphere of MSP and the two projects. In the workshops the tools used will be introduced and applied\, e.g. mapping the coexistence conflicts with a matrix\, scenario-building and brainstorming for the solutions.Workshop leader: Anu Printsmann\, PhD (Tallinn University) \n\n\n\nLearning the difference in planning offshore and onshore wind farmingWe are looking further into the planning process of offshore and onshore wind farms\, comparing their differences along with recent developments in the context of energy crisis.Workshop leader: Kaarel Hendrik Zernant \n\n\n\nTimetable\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nORGATEAM\n\n\nAgnes – main organizerMarie Johanna – main organizerElina Maarja – finance coordinatorMariia – science coordinatorKarl Joann – science coordinatorHanna-Ingrid – science coordinatorHelen Katrina – excursionsHeli – little helper who helps where she can – desagn\, fundraising\, greenKai Ly – little helper who helps where she can – fundraising\, greenMicol – helping handArina – helping handSneezly\n\n\n\n\nSponsors

SUMMARY:Western regional congress 2023
DESCRIPTION:Facebook\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Topic\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nprogram\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\n\ntravel Detail\n\n\n\n\n\nOrgateam\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTopic\n\n\n\nWith an ongoing change in our climate european weather has become more and more unpredictable in recent years. As extreme weather events will occur increasingly it is time for societies to face those challenges. We are in urgent need to adapt and\n\n\n\nPrepare for the Extreme!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClimate change is incredibly multifaceted and present everywhere – severe weather events\, crisis management\, urban planning\, renewable energies\, monitoring systems\, tourism\, agriculture and emissions are just a few examples. During the congress\, we will discuss these challenges in more detail from selected geographical perspectives while the workshops and excursions offered will provide the broadest possible coverage of contexts. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nlocation\n\n\n\nIn order to have a direct look at the consequences of climate change WRC23 will take place in Thuringia Forest. In this unique mountainous region in central Germany influences by extreme weather events have been visible for a few years already. With the forest being composed of mainly coniferous trees it is highly impacted by heat waves and droughts and therefore has been facing a massive bark beetle invasion. In addition to that\, the region has been facing tremendous economical and societal changes in the past four decades after German reunification. Rural depopulation\, sectoral unemployment or sustainable urban development strategies are only a few issues the Thurnigia Forest is confronted with. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur accommodation will be Ferienpark Thüringer Wald\, a beautiful situated recreational park directly in the forest next to the small town of Schalkau. With cozy dorms\, plenty of seminar rooms\, an assembly hall and a small restaurant attached this accommodation provides everything for a magnificent congress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nworkshops & Excursions\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\n\n\n1. Natural disasters: A question of climate change?\nThe workshop will address the question if whether climate change is responsible for the latest natural disasters. We will look at historical and current events and derive connections and differences. Also a look at the origin and the (geographical) conditions of the region are very interesting. \n\n\n\n\n2. Prep R for the X-treme:\nIn our workshop ‘PrepR for the X-treme’ our main topic is the increase in temperature and how it affects forest ecosystems\, for example through droughts. We analyse these effects by using remote sensing data in combination with the programming language R in a beginner-friendly manner (no programming experience required). If you are looking to improve your data analysis skills\, learn about remote sensing or look into forest ecosystems\, this is the workshop for you! \n\n\n\n\n3. Urban Resilience – How to future-proof our cities:\nOur cities\, fragile by nature and by design\, have created some of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Rapid urbanization raises the question of adaptability to future social\, environmental\, technological and economic changes\, as most of the population is expected to settle in urban agglomerations. In this workshop we will have a look at the challenges cities are currently facing in a rapidly changing world and what kind of proactive measures are required to not only survive\, but prevail. \n\n\n\n\n4. Flood-risk and how to deal with it:\nClimate change causes sea levels to rise and increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. Recent catastrophes such as Ahr-River-Valley demonstrate the importance of understanding risk and exposure to flood and measures of mitigation\, protection and adaption. In this workshop\, we’ll figure out what makes an area prone to damage by flood and the struggle of flood-proofing settlements. Let’s try out a range of tools from QGIS to collaborative planning that can help you to make your community more prepared for the extreme. \n\n\n\n\n5. Geopolitical discussion on green policy in Europe:\nHave you ever wanted to take part in a Model United Nations-like discussion? In this workshop you will have the opportunity to train your discussion skills by representing a european nation in a political debate on green policy in Europe. You will receive input on discussion techniques\, research arguments and facts on green policy and your respective nation’s interests and\, finally\, apply all this in a full-on debate in the final session. \n\n\n\n\n6. Climate Adaptation Strategies in Tourism:\nThe workshop “Climate Adaptation Strategies in Tourism” aims to examine the impacts of climate change on tourism and discuss some solutions. During the workshop\, participants will recognize the risks of climate change\, understand the current trends in climate adaptation in tourism\, develop strategies for climate adaptation measures\, and develop an action plan. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExcursions\n\n\n\n\n1. Hike – Into the Caves\nThis hike is guided by a local expert and includes a cave tour. You will get specific information about our surrounding area and its geological underground as a climate archive. \n\n\n\n\n2. Hike – Save the Thuringian Forest \nYou will focus on the local environmental impacts. Your guide is an agricultural biologist who will point out connections between ecology and different factors like drought\, warming\, water deficit\, monocultures and large-scale projects such as the nearby ICE route. \n\n\n\n\n3. Structural change in shrinking regions\nCity of arms and peace\, immense population decline and senior-friendly “health resort” – hardly anywhere else in Germany such great contrasts manifest themselves as in the socialistically transformed former mining and porcelain town of Suhl in the “Green Heart of Thuringia”. \n\n\n\nDuring this excursion we will look for historical traces and discuss questions of future urban development with regard to identity\, sustainable climate adaptation strategies and social resilience. \n\n\n\n\n4. Hard Hike – Up on to the Rennsteig\nThe Hard Hike is our longest hiking route and has been a congress tradition for years. Together we will walk part of the Rennsteig\, an historic long distance ridge walk. First we’ll take the bus to our starting point from where we’ll walk back to our accommodation. Of course\, there will be a bit of thematic input. \n\n\n\n\n5. Environmental reconstruction in the Thuringian Forest\nYou will visit a bog together with a professor from the University of Jena. On the basis of a bore core with sediments and pollen contained in it\, the regional climate and environmental history can be reconstructed. \n\n\n\n\n6. Living and surviving in the Thuringian Forest in earlier times\nHow did people live in the Thuringian Forest in earlier times\, when the environmental conditions were rough and harsh and technical possibilities of modern society did not yet exist? The excursion explores this question through the many traces and relics that can still be found in the region of the conference venue today. These include mills\, gold and slate mining\, glass production and cottage industry. The single points will be reached by minibuses\, shorter walks included. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTravel details\n\n\n\nTrain: In Schalkau there is a regional train station with connections towards Grimmenthal/Erfurt or Sonneberg/Coburg/Bamberg where you will have further connections to intercity trains. Please fill in this form on your travel details.  \n\n\n\nBus: There are a number of bus stops in the region. Howether\, direct access to Schalkau by bus is not possible. You would have to change to a train at some point during your journey.  \n\n\n\nCar: Schalkau is reachable by car via Autobahn 73. If you plan on coming by car and there are still free seats you can fill in this form\, so that other EGEANs can join the ride.   \n\n\n\nBike: Schalkau is located close to the european bike track “Green Belt”\, which runs along the former inner German border. SUMMARY:ERC 2023 - Living in the Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Next year’s Eastern Regional Congress will have the theme ‘Living in the Mountains’\, as the event will showcase the authentic mountainous life in Romania. Through the workshops\, the participants will discover aspects about geomorphology and geology\, cultural tourism\, traditional practices\, climate change and its impact and hydropower. It is going to be the perfect opportunity to explore a region with breathtaking nature and an unique character that stays unchanged throughout these dynamic times we now live in. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThe ERC will be take place in the Western Carpathians\, 1.5 hours away from the city of Cluj-Napoca. The location is close to the Apuseni Natural Park\, which encompasses extraordinary mountains\, forests\, waterfalls and caves\, some of which will be visited in the excursions of the workshops. The accomodation itself has a campfire place\, saunas\, 3 conference rooms\, a large field for football\, voleyball and horse riding\, and there is also a paintball field nearby. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nThe workshops we want to organise at the ERC will offer an insight into a variety of aspects relevant for this region of Romania: the dynamics and interactions of ethnicities\, the local traditions\, climate change and the processes through which the Carpathian mountain chain was formed\, which is perfectly described by the rocks. There will also be an additional\, special workshop about organising congresses. \n\n\n\nAll that being said\, we are starting the open call for workshop leaders! All you have to do is to look in the list bellow\, choose a workshop that catches your attention\, register through the RVSP and then send us an email with a motivational letter about why you want to lead that particular workshop and your experience in the topic. For those who want to apply to lead the workshop ‘How to organise a congress’\, we are looking for experienced people who have been either EPRA/EA\, or main coordinator of at least one congress\, or coordinator for at least 2 congresses (Participants coordinator\, Green coordinator etc). \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to the following address: erc2023@egea.eu \n\n\n\n\nGeomorphological mosaics\n\n\n\n\nThe Apuseni Mountains\, formed in alpine orogeny\, are relatively young mountains\, but have a wide variety of rocks – so this way\, we can talk about a so called “petrographical” mosaic. However\, the predominant formations are the limestones\, so we can bring into light one of the most iconic European karst regions. \n\n\n\n\nWater power\n\n\n\n\nRight after thermal energy\, hydropower is the main source of energy production in Romania (producing more than 25% of the total annual energy in the country). The region of Apuseni Mountains is one of the best regions for the placement of the hydropower stations. Would Apuseni Mountains have potential to also develop other types of renewable energy power plants? \n\n\n\n\nClimate change measurement and tracking\n\n\n\n\nClimate change\, one of the main contemporary issues\, has many visible effects all around the world. What is the impact of climate change on Apuseni Mountains – home of more than 30 natural habitats\, each with its own biodiversity? Will the intensification of natural hazards slow down even more the development of the people who live here? \n\n\n\n\nTraditional practices in the modern world\n\n\n\n\nAs in every mountain settlement in Romania\, pasturing\, subsistence farming and wood harvesting were always present in the area and the tradition is maintained until the present days. These practices shaped the landscapes and the biodiversity that can be found nowadays in the Apuseni Mountains. Across time\, regulations of the natural protected areas and higher market requirement for wood led to some illegal activities in the Romanian Carpathians. How do these activities impact the environment and the community? Which are the involved factors? \n\n\n\n\nCultural tourism\n\n\n\n\nRomanians\, Hungarians\, Germans. This is the shortest and most stereotypical description of Transylvania\, and by default of the Apuseni Mountains. Here\, the hard living conditions had made these people learn to cooperate\, building along the time a rich cultural heritage. What is the current status of these communities and how is their cooperation? Is the multiculturalism an element valued by the Transylvanian tourism? How can we successfully integrate the cultural diversity in the development of the tourism in the area? \n\n\n\n\nHow to organise a congrees?\n\n\n\n\nEveryone likes congresses\, right? This workshop will be dedicated to those who want to learn how to organise a congress. Whether a newbie or a more experienced EGEAn\, this workshop will be essential for them to gain an insight into the work that is done behind the scenes of such a large event. It is also a great opportunity for the people that will be in the OrgaTeams of the congresses in 2024 to get a jumpstart and already get accustomed to the work that has to be done in order to have a 5* congress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Romanian entities are delighted to organise the ERC 2023 and are waiting for you in the beautiful Carpathian Garden!

Together we will find out what zones have geothermal potential and how to exploit it to our benefit. \n\n\n\n\n\nAC 2022 Workshop Leader Andrei\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBiodiversity of Danube River\nBiodiversity in general and along rivers is something that’s constantly changing. With human settlements\, drainages and river corrections for cities and agriculture\, rivers transform. In the first session of our workshop\, we want to focus on the historical changes of the flow paths and thus the biodiversity of the Danube. With the tool https://www.oldmapsonline.org/\,a specific area of the Danube river and its transition throughout history can be observed. After channelisation of rivers\, revitalisations are becoming a bigger topic. What are key aspects in revitalisation projects and is it possible to reconstruct the initial quality of the ecosystem? \n\n\n\nThe biodiversity of the Danube as one of the longest rivers in Europe is unique. It originates in South-Western Germany and ends in the Black Sea in Europes second largest river delta. A general introduction into the biodiversity of the Danube is given. Ecosystems of the Danube river are investigated in more detail with two foci: the local environment of Budapest and the Danube delta. \n\n\n\nIn a group project\, a segment of the Danube river biodiversity is investigated in more detail. What is the current and what is the past biodiversity of the chosen area? What “corrections” were made that lead to a loss in biodiversity? What measures could be done to increase biodiversity again? How feasible are revitalisation projects? The answers to these questions and also further elaborations are summarised in posters that are presented during the workshop presentations. \n\n\n\n\n\nAC 2022 Workshop Co-leader Celine\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAC 2022 Workshop Co-leader Juliette\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEffects of Urbanizatıion on Groundwater\nHave you ever wondered where your daily tap water is coming from? Where it has been through and how it is stored in the ground beneath your feet? Then this workshop is for you. In a couple of sessions\, you will get to know the basics of groundwater recharge\, geological architecture of aquifer systems and the various chemical influences on water quality with regards to the greater Budapest area. We will try to examine the influence of urbanisation on groundwater supply and quality and by the end of this workshop\, you will be able to hopefully appreciate this everyday commodity a bit more. \n\n\n\n(1) Session: explanation of water cycle\, groundwater formation and reservoir architecture (maybe identify influx sites for surface water within the Budapest area by utilizing geological maps …) \n\n\n\n(2) Session: for the scientific excursion walk around the previously identified sites and measure concentration of anthropogenic induced chemical compounds (lead\, nitrate\, potassium\, …) in surface wells \n\n\n\n(3) Session: evaluate measured concentrations\, discuss the source of each measured compound and effects/ solutions for improving groundwater quality\, map the results and create a poster for the workshop presentation \n\n\n\n\n\nAC 2022 Workshop Leader Jan\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProtection of Our Rivers\nRivers\, one of the most important water resources of our world. Over recent years\, rivers have been polluted with various substances introduced by humans. Water is an essential resource and its purity is being dramatically endangered by our pollution and urgently needs protecting. There are various types of pollutants\, some of which are general detritus\, microplastics\, oils\, and the residues from chemical manufacturing and these are all contaminating our water resources not only endangering our health but especially the health of our planet. Without water\, terrestrial and aquatic life cannot survive. Rivers act as the main transport of freshwater\, and therefore need protection at all costs. However\, this protection does not only mean restoring the natural ecosystems to improve their biodiversity\, but also taking a look at the natural water balance of the river to ensure its health and track contamination due to pollution. Plastic\, as a main contributor to freshwater pollution\, can be found in rivers as eroded small particles which we call microplastics. These can be found in almost every ecosystem\, but in rivers especially\, which is why we will be focusing on protecting our rivers in regards to the concentrations of microplastic in them. \n\n\n\nIn our Workshop our main focus will be on general river pollution with a special take on microplastic in watercourses. As the accommodation is located on an island\, surrounded by branches of the Danube river we will focus on the pollution of the Danube river and compare it with other rivers. In one session we want to have a small excursion to the Szentendrei-Dunaag to measure the flow velocity on the basis of which we can calculate the approximate amount of microplastic that could be deposited in the river (that’s just possible if we can get the equipment for this\, but we are on it). Afterwards\, we want to compare the data with other data from the Danube river and see if there is a difference or if it is similar in the side branch to the Danube. Additionally\, if we can’t get the measuring equipment or don’t have enough time\, we want to build a map in QGIS about the amount of pollution in the Danube\, as it is the most polluted river in Hungary\, mostly polluted by microplastic. According to the Wessling – Quality of life research group\, the Danube river counts 50 ± 7.07 particles per cubic metre. Will we find the same amount in the Szentendrei-Dunaag river? \n\n\n\nWe are eager to explore the area to get results! \n\n\n\n\n\nAC 2022 Workshop Co-leaders Josefa and Runa\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecreational Areas in Budapest\nThe workshop will focus on presenting places in Budapest where people can relax and recharge their batteries/power. We will try to point out the diversity and variety of different relaxation options in every aspect (City tour\, Pub tour\, Wellness\, Relaxation\, Sport and more…). Based on the great possibility of choosing relaxation\, a person will come to his senses both mentally and physically. \n\n\n\n\n\nAC 2022 Workshop Leader Michal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExcUrsıons\n\n\n\n\nCycling around Szetendre\n\n\n\n\n\nDragonboat on Danube\n\n\n\n\n\nHiking in Rám-szakadék\n\n\n\n\n\nHiking to the Prédikálószék\n\n\n\n\n\nSightseeing in Esztergom\n\n\n\n\n\nSightseeing in Visegrád\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBasıc Information\n\n\n\nWhen ? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nWhere ? \n\n\n\nAnnual Congress 2022 is going to take place in Szentendre\,Budapest. Have You ever been sailing? In our workshop\, we will not only cover the scientific aspect of water tourism across Europe\, but we will go sailing by ourselves and use professional measuring devices to get data about water pollution! \n\n\n\nThe subject of the workshop concerns the general character of water tourism and different approaches to spending leisure time on the water. We will discuss the differences and types of this kind of tourism in various countries. Then we’ll smoothly proceed to the aspect of environmental harassment caused by tourists. By the end of the workshops\, we will aim to create a report discussing the results of our measurement taken on the excursion and assessing the further consequences of the development of water tourism in the Masurian region. \n\n\n\nExcursion\n\n\n\nWe will divide into three groups and get onto the yachts. While sailing across the lake Mikołajskie\, one of the most popular Masurian lakes\, we will measure the cleanliness of the lake using a professional device provided by The Jagiellonian University. Having the continuous measurements taken over some period\, we will be able to put the results onto the map\, which will result in the breathtaking and astonishing spatial interpretation of the quality of the water in the lake. \n\n\n\nWorkshop leaders\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeona Matotek\n\n\n\nUniversity of Zagreb\, EGEA Zagreb \n\n\n\nFacebook\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeon Puljević\n\n\n\nUniversity of Zagreb\, EGEA Zagreb \n\n\n\nFacebook\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistorical places and their meaning in region\nOlecko; Poland – May 20\, 2018: Monument in honor of soldiers who died during World War I\, unveiled on September 11\, 1927\n\n\n\nNo beaches? Tickets for international connections can be bought way earlier (even now). \n\n\n\nYou can travel to Olsztyn from every bigger city in Poland (Warsaw\, Kraków\, Poznań\, Wrocław\, and Gdańsk). It takes between 2 to 4 hours to get there from Warsaw\, Gdańsk\, and Poznań) or 6 – 7 hours from Kraków and Wrocław. \n\n\n\nFrom every city\, you can travel the day before or on the day of the congress (9th of May). Most of the trains arrive in Olsztyn between 9 am and 15 pm. \n\n\n\n\nHow to get to Olsztyn\, by bus?\nFlixbus arrives at Olsztyn only around 9 pm\, so if you want to travel with Flixbus you will have to arrive there the day before (8th of May). It is line 1221 and you can travel with it from Kraków or Warsaw (also straight from WAW and WMI airport). \n\n\n\nYou can also travel by Polonus from Warsaw to Olsztyn. There are also airports in Poznan\, Wroclaw\, Krakow\, and Gdansk. \n\n\n\n\nHow to get to Olsztyn\, by car?\nYou can travel by bla bla car\, but remember that drivers often post their offers only 2 – 3 days before the ride. \n\n\n\nHere is a sheet that we created to ease ride-sharing between EGEAns! You can switch between sheets depending on whether you are offering or needing a car ride. \n\n\n\nCar sharing \n\n\n\nMost of the highways in Poland are for free\, so you don’t have to worry about paying for the ride. These include partners of EGEA and the AC specifically\, as well as EGEA alumni who can tell us about their geographical career choices! \n\n\n\nAGENDA: At 16:00 the presenting organisations and some introduce themselves briefly. From 16:20 two presentations of 20 minutes will follow from our partners Kadaster and KNAG. From 16:40 we’ll have speeddate sessions with partners and alumni\, meet them all and get to know their personal stories. From 17:00 to 17:30 you can walk around freely and start or join a conversation with the attending partners and each other over a social virtual drink; something we call a “borrel” in The Netherlands. \n\n\n\nAttending partners: \n\n\n\nKNAG: Royal Dutch Geography Society. Eelko Postma\, president of KNAG\, and Leo Paul\, KNAG’s representative for EUGEO\, are eager to meet you. EUGEO is the European Asscoiation of Geographical Societies\, of which KNAG is part. Their fund \, FEGOO\, sponsored the AC. They will present what it means to work in geography education. Radboud University\, department of Geography\, Planning and Environment. About doing research and doing masters in Nijmegen.Kadaster: The Netherlands’ Cadastre\, Land Registry and Mapping Agency. Will present about land development\, in The Netherlands and Internationally.5 EGEA Alumni from all sides of Geography\, and beyond. What is it like to start a PhD and continue in academia\, what is it like to go all in on GIS with TomTom or ESRI\, what if you do something totally different from your geographical background? \n\n\n\n\nLink to the Career Talks area\n\n\n\n\n\nGREEN EVENT: Guerilla Gardening and How to Help City Trees in Need21 sept. 19:00 – 21:00 CET\nHave you ever heard of Guerilla Gardening? “Gardening in the public space with or without permission” is possible in many forms: from secretly dropping some seeds or burying some bulbs\, to creating a tiny garden around the street tree in front of your door\, to setting up a community garden together with your neighbors – or any other opportunity you see for making your neighborhood nicer\, greener\, more biodiverse! \n\n\n\n\nVISIT GREEN EVENT PAGE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScience at the AC2021\n\n\n\nClick on the titles below for information about the scientific program. More information will be added in the near future. A digital certificate will be given to participants of GeoLabs and workshops! \n\n\n\n\nLecture 1: Dutch fight against the water | 13 sept. 12:00 – 14:00 CET\n\n\n\n\nThe Dutch are well known for their fight against the water\, but what happens when we need to give up some of our land to properly protect the people against the rising sea levels? This is something professor Middelkoop and professor Vu from the university of Utrecht enthusiastically dive into. \n\n\n\nIt is a multidisciplinary challenge that will require all of us to work together and put our knowledge to the test. In this interactive lecture we will discuss the problems and opportunities that arise when trying to free up space for the sea in such a densely populated country as the Netherlands. \n\n\n\nIt is up to you to figure out how to tackle this situation.  \n\n\n\nThis lecture will be held monday the 13th of september from 12:00 till 14:00 CET by professor Hans Middelkoop and his partners. Tibor from EGEA Leuven is ready to challenge you! \n\n\n\n\nLecture 2: Global and local SDG’s | 14 sept. 20:00 – 22:00 CET\n\n\n\n\nOf course we are all familiar with the sustainable development goals. But how do we turn these abstract concepts into practice? \n\n\n\nProject manager at SDG Nederland Mena Leila Kilani will cover the small-scale challenges of integrating the SDG’s in daily practice in both personal and organizational life. In the other half of this lecture\, professor Kraak will be talking about his expertise on how to visualize the SDG’s on a global scale. Together\, they will show  how SDG’s can be turned from abstract concepts to visible change. \n\n\n\nThe first half of this lecture is presented by professor Menno-Jan Kraak from the university of Twente\, followed by project manager Mena Leila Kilan from SDG Nederland. This lecture will take place on the 14th of september from 20:00 till 22:00 CET.  \n\n\n\n\nJoin Global and Local SDGs lecture here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 1: World of GIS | 18 sept. 10:00 – 16:00 CET (incl. break)\n\n\n\n\nOf course mapping the future is a challenging task\, which increasingly asks for skilled experts. GIS can help solve problems\, as it can identify where and how such issues could be tackled. In this workshop\, we’ll explore different features of GIS by diving into more advanced methods. It will use a case close to our traveler’s hearts: AirBnB. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is especially interesting for everyone who wants to level-up their GIS skills. Please be aware that participating in this advanced GIS workshop requires GIS experience! \n\n\n\nThis workshop is a cooperation with professor Egbert van der Zee from the University of Utrecht. It is guided by our GIS specialists Max and Marcel from EGEA Jena and will take place on saturday the 18th of september from 10:00-16:00 CET (with a nice lunch break from 12:00 till 14:00). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 2: Land use in the Achterhoek: The Game18 sept. 10:00 – 16:00 CET (incl. break)\n\n\n\n\nPeripheral areas often face different problems compared to centre areas. As youth leave the area and the population ages\, challenges arise for spatial planning and service provision. This workshop will look at such issues in the Achterhoek\, a peripheral area in the Netherlands where the congress originally would have taken place.  \n\n\n\nThe city of Groenlo had given us quite a challenge\, but spatial planning expert (and old EGEAn) Martinus from Kadaster has given us some handholds to tackle this. Together\, we will figure out how Groenlo can use spatial planning to solve their problems. We will do so not by diving into science but with a rather unique method: games! \n\n\n\nThis GeoLab uses a game designed by Kadaster. The case is designed with the help of local ambassadors from the Achterhoek. Our lovely EGEAn Borna from Zagreb is ready to moderate this workshop and give you all the help you need. This workshop will take place on Saturday the 18th from 10:00-16:00 CET (with a nice lunch break from 12:00-14:00 CET).  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeolab 1: Future Foods | 15\, 17\, 22\, 24 sept. 15:00 – 17:00 CET\n\n\n\n\nThe world’s population is growing: more mouths are to be fed\, while at the same time our food system has proven unsustainable. Many alternative systems have been suggested\, but each has its limitations. At the start of this GeoLab Professor Jansma will cover a few of these alternative future food systems. Afterwards\, it is your turn to explore the possibilities of one of these alternatives: food forests.  \n\n\n\nTogether with professional food forest designers Iwein and Andreas you will learn the challenges and possibilities food forests can offer. In the following sessions you will discover this hands-on\, by designing your own food forests. \n\n\n\nThis GeoLab features professor Jan Eelco Jansma from the University of Wageningen and food forest specialist Iwein Fuld. It is led by Katri and Milja from EGEA Oulu. It will take place over the course of four sessions\, on wednesday and friday the 15th\, 17th\, 22nd and 24th from 15:00-17:00 CET.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeoLab 2: School of Maps | 15\, 17\, 22\, 24 sept. 15:00 – 17:00 CET\n\n\n\n\nGIS is not just important in our work as geography scientists. It’s also increasingly used in high-schools. Together with professor Tim Favier and expert Tom Kuijpers we’ll explore how maps could be used to teach youth about a diverse range of topics and how GIS can contribute to this. \n\n\n\nThis GeoLab is for everyone with interest in education in general\, it is especially useful for the future teachers among us and for everyone that wants to level-up their basic arcGIS skills. It’s a creative challenge that can help future students understand difficult topics through our favourite medium: Maps! During the session you can pick any topic you like or have great expertise in to transform into a fun and educational lesson. \n\n\n\nThis interesting topic will be introduced to us by professor Tim Favier from the University of Utrecht and Tom Kuijpers from Esri Nederland. Our very own specialists\, Malte from EGEA Osnabrück and Marek from EGEA Praha\, will guide this GeoLab. The four sessions will be the same as the other GeoLab\, on wednesday and friday the 15th and 17th and the 22nd and 24th from 15:00-17:00 CET. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPartners of the Annual Congress\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Netherlands’ Cadastre\, Land Registry and Mapping Agency – in short Kadaster – collects and registers administrative and spatial data on property and the rights involved. This also goes for ships\, aircraft and telecom networks. Doing so\, Kadaster protects legal certainty. We are also responsible for national mapping and maintenance of the national reference coordinate system. Furthermore\, we are an advisory body for land-use issues and national spatial data infrastructures\, also operating internationally. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Royal Dutch Geographical Society (KNAG) is one of the AC’s major sponsors. Through their fund for educational and academic geographical events (FEGOO) they have helped realise the Annual congress. The fund arose from EUGEO’s first congress in 2006. KNAG is the leading geography network in The Netherlands since 1873 as well as the association for Geography education. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRadboud University – Geography Planning and Environment. The department of Geography\, Planning and Environment in Nijmegen is a generous sponsor for the AC2021. Find more information\, including their spatial master programmes\, by clicking the logo! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a long term partner of EGEA Europe and as important contributor to the AC2021\, Utrecht University cannot be left out here. Various employees have contributed to the programme and realisation of this Annual Congress. They offer a great number of master programmes in the whole area of geosciences.
