From the west (Hungary) you can enter Romania at the following border crossing points: Cenad(RO) – Kiszombor(H), Nadlac(RO) – Nagylak(H), Turnu(RO) – Battonya(H), Varsand(RO) – Gyula(H), Bors(RO) – Artand(H), Valea lui Mihai(RO), Carei (RO) – Vallaj(H), Petea(RO) – Csengersima(H).  The best ones are in bold.

At Nadlac you can get from Budapest following the highways M5 to Szeged, then M43 to Mako and then the national road 43(E68) to the border.  In Romania the route is shown in Fig. 1 and it’s the following: National road 7 (E68) passing Arad, Deva, Sebes, Sibiu, than National road 1 (still E68) to Brasov, and from there a few more km to Predeal, on the same road nr. 1 in direction to Bucharest. Between Deva and Sibiu you can use the newly constructed Highway A1. In total, Nadlac – Predeal it’s about 500km and between 6-7hrs of travelling time. Watch out between Brasov and Predeal cause the road is a little difficult and with much traffic at some hours. Sibiu it’s a great stopping point and it’s the destination for one of our excursions too.

Nadlac-Predeal

Fig. 1: Nadlac – Predeal

At Bors you can get from Debrecen, using roads 47 and 42 to the border. You should use this route if you’re coming from Slovakia or Poland. In Romania you have 2 possibilities shown in Fig.2 and Fig. 3. You can follow the national road 1 passing Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Turda, Alba Iulia, Sebes, Sibiu and Brasov (Fig. 2), in this case it would be a good opportunity to make a stop in Alba Iulia and admire the fortress if you’re in daytime. Another great stop on the route, destination of one of our excursions too, is Sibiu. You can use the newly constructed highway between Sebes and Sibiu. Distance is around 500km, and the travelling time between 6-7h.

Bors-PredealFig. 2: Bors – Predeal through Alba Iulia and Sibiu

The other possibility is to follow the European road E60: national road 1 to Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Turda, than national road 15 to Campia Turzii, Ludus, Targu Mures, then national road 13 to Sighisoara and Brasov and finally once again road 1 to Predeal (Fig. 3). In this second case Sighisoara is a great stop on the route (it’s the destination of one of our great excursions too). The distance is around 460km and the travelling time between 6-7h.

bors- predeal sighiFig. 3: Bors – Predeal through Sighisoara

In both cases you can bypass Cluj-Napoca and Turda by using the portion of A3 highway which is in use. Watch out on the road between Brasov and Predeal is a little difficult and with much traffic at some hours.

For those of you who find that the shortest way is from Oradea to Deva using the national road 76 (E79) we want to advertise you that this is a mountain road and in some places is in poor conditions, so it’s not the best choice.

siret predeal

From the north (Ukraine) you can enter Romania at Halmeu, Sighetu Marmatiei and Siret border crossing points.

Siret is the best if coming either from Lviv or Kiev. You can get there following the Ukrainian road M19 (E85) from Chernivtsi.

In Romania you have to follow National road 2(E85) to Suceava, Falticeni, Roman, Bacau, then road 11(E574) to Onesti, Targu Secuiesc, Brasov, and finally road 1(E60) in direction to Bucharest until Predeal (Fig. 4).  There are about 400km and the travelling time is around 6 hours.

If you are travelling on daytime and have plenty of time, after Falticeni you can change to national road 15C to Targu Neamt, Piatra Neamt, then on 15 to Bicaz, then 12C to Gheorgheni, then 12 to Miercurea Ciuc, Sfantu Gheorghe, Brasov(Fig. 6). This will allow you to see the Bicaz pass, a very scenic route between Piatra Neamt and Gheorgheni. Consider 50km and at least 1.5 hrs more. Also the road isn’t in a very good state on this route.

Fig. 4: Siret – Predeal

From the east (Moldova) you can enter Romania at one of the following border crossing points: Radauti-Prut, Sculeni, Albita, and Galati. From Chisinau, the closest border crossing point is Albita. From there, in Romania, the route is the following:  National roads 24B and 24 to Husi and Vaslui, then road 2F to Bacau then road 11(E574) to Onesti, Targu Secuiesc, Brasov, and finally road 1(E60) in direction to Bucharest until Predeal (Fig. 5).  There are about 350km and the travelling time is around 6 hours.

giurgiu - predeal

From the south (Bulgaria) the most useful border crossing points are Calafat(RO) – Vidin(BG) and Giurgiu(RO) – Ruse(BG).

From Giurgiu follow Bational road 5 (E70 & E85) to Bucharest, bypass the capital city then follow highway A3 to Ploiesti and continue on national road 1(E60) in direction to Brasov until you reach Predeal (Fig. 6). There are about 250km, and the traveling time is around 3hrs.

Fig. 6: Giurgiu – Predeal

From the south–west (Serbia) you can enter Romania by 4 border crossing points: Jimbolia(RO) – Srpska Crnja(SRB), Stamora-Moravita(RO) – Vatin(SRB) (near Vrsac), Naidas(RO) – Kaluderovo(SRB) (near Bela Crkva), and Portile de Fier (Iron Gates), near Drobeta Turnu Severin.
From Novi Sad the closest border is Jimbolia, and from Beograd is Vrsac and Moravita.
From Jimbolia take road 59A to Timisoara.
From Vrsac and Moravita take road 59(E70) to Timisoara.

From Timisoara take national road 6(E70) to Lugoj, then 68A(E673) to Ilia and Deva. From there on, the route is the same as from Nadlac entry point, as you have to pass through Sebes and Sibiu, than Brasov, and from there a few more km to Predeal, on the national road 1 in direction to Bucharest. Between Deva and Sibiu you can use the newly constructed Highway A1, and you can also by-pass Lugoj by using a small part of the same A1 highway. In total, Timisoara – Predeal it’s about 450km and about 7 hrs of travelling time (Fig. 7). Watch out between Brasov and Predeal cause the road is a little difficult and with much traffic at some hours. Sibiu it’s a great stopping point and it’s the destination for one of our excursions too. From the two borders to Timisoara the travelling time should be less than 1 hour.

timisoara predeal

Fig. 7: Timisoara – Predeal

Once in Predeal you have to reach Belvedere Hotel which is on top of a hill at the end of Libertatii Boulevard (which is in fact just a street).

If you’re coming from Brasov, once you entered Predeal take the first street on the left (Bulevardul Libertatii) and stick on it up to the hotel which is on top of the hill (Fig 8).

Bulevardul Libertatii is the street just before the railway station (on the left side) and the park (on the right side). So if you have reached the park/railway station turn 180° and then just after the railway station turn right on the first street which is Bulevardul Libertatii.

If you’re coming from Bucharest or Pitesti and Rasnov , follow the main road until you reach the railway station (on the right side) and the park(on the left side). Just after them turn right on the first street which is Bulevardul Libertatii and stick on it up to the hotel which is on top of the hill (Fig 8).
