This year we celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. EGEA decided to discuss its remembrance, legacy and history from various interdisciplinary perspectives. At the last GA in Selce, Croatia EGEA decided to create more impact by having theme years. Therefore, the Iron Curtain project serves unofficially as “theme year zero”. During this year different kinds of activities and campaigns will happen that are all linked through the common topic of the Iron Curtain. We want to remember what it was like when the Iron Curtain was dividing Europe, and also discuss the question of how it affects our lives today.

Planned for this year:

  • Facebook posts connected to important dates during the revolutionary year 1989. Do not hesitate and like our FB page if you have not done before:
  • Interactive map – “Share your local heritage” – where you are able to share the places around your city connected to the Iron Curtain and history of Europe and the EU.
  • Video/photo/vlog competition – the theme is based on your own personal “memories” and feelings what the fall of the Iron Curtain and united Europe means to you. We plan to end the competition on the AC and have really nice prices for you.
  • E-lectures on different political/historical geography themes connected to the Iron Curtain topic.

a) Interactive map – “Share your local heritage”

With our interactive public map, based on Google’s “My Maps”, we want to make European and EU history and the heritage of the Iron Curtain come alive. We encourage everyone to share places connected to Europe, the EU, or the Iron Curtain and the Cold War they know or to explore and consider visiting places shared by others. You can share anything related to the mentioned topics – monuments and memorials, institutions and offices, museums and exhibitions, historic buildings, locations of famous events, and so on.
